The Barista Express™ is equipped with a feature that allows for a dryer puck when it is removed after extraction. There is a small valve in the group head that sucks up a bit of the excess water. Unfortunately, with that water is coffee oils and possible grounds. In order to keep this valve working correctly and optimally, it is required it be cleaned periodically. The CLEAN ME light that comes on indicates when it is time to run this cleaning cycle.

thanks for the video- for 10 years I had this model ( with the square coffee bean compartment on top) and doing this process the water comes down through the handle as if u make an espresso.( the little rubber thingy has a tiny hole) After that machine died after 10 years I bought a new machine (with the round coffee bean compartment on top) and I was completely irritated that in the cleaning mode no water came out “the usual way” and already thought something was wrong. Then I saw your video! Thanks again for taking the time making this video. BTW - I really love the cappuccino this machine makes- not any different from having one in Italy! really! and my last machine lasted 10 years- hope this one will be as durable as well!

@@HoonsCoffee Heh, sounds familiar. I had one other question. I am an owner os a small IT consulting company so I have lots of flexibility. My goal for a barista express is that when I have time I can make some good coffee. and when I have to run out to a client at 6am I can just make a quick doubleshot. I used to have a keurig which is fast and convenient but the coffee stinks. the BE seems a nice fit between being able to make good coffee when I have time and still a good espresso shot when I'm short on time. Would you agree?

Hi Hoon, great videos - thanks. I have an issue with my machine though - I followed the instructions to the letter but when I start the cleaning process (pressing all three buttons) the pressure builds up and within a few seconds after the water starts to flow through the portafilter and group head the arrow on the pressure gauge shoots up and there is a mini 'explosion'. Water then flows over the sides of the portafilter. If I leave the machine on the cleaning process (with the portafilter in place) water flows over the sides and makes a fabulous mess in the kitchen ! When making coffees, it's also started to do the same thing - pressure builds up and then there is a much smaller 'explosion' and water comes over the side of the portafilter. Any ideas ??? Thanks in advance. Haggis/Col
