    The year I was 60 yo (21 years ago) I did Mt. Adams 3 times in 3 weeks. Campground to summit to campground in one day.
    Actually drive in from Kennewick WA, climb and drive back the same day.
    It was prep for a Rainier climb.
    I did Hood twice - a week apart - prepping for Adams.
    St. Helens twice, a month apart with South Sister twice in between.
    That year, and the year before, I did Paradise to Muir a total of 28 times.
    Being 'in shape' makes walking around on mountains MUCH more enjoyable than not.

      That's incredible, Jim! For people who have not done hikes up to 10,000ft+ would you recommend any kind of altitude or low oxygen training prior to making a summit attempt?

      Thanks for watching! When I did route in the video (7/4/2021), we had just been through a heat wave in the PNW. I did the same route almost exactly a year later (end of June 2022) and there was much more snow. The building on top was completely buried. I was happy there was more snow in 2022, but I imagine there was still more snow when you climbed it in the 80s.

  • @SMOBY44

    I first climbed there in 2007, beginning of August. At 1pm on the summit the temp was 28 degrees. Hiked back to the trailhead by 6pm and temp was still 85 degrees as we loaded into the truck. Been back a dozen times and it never gets old. One year made it to the lower lunch counter before I encountered any snow, another year the snow was still 15 feet deep below timberline, crampons for traction the whole way.

    It was very cold when we ascended September 30-Oct 1 of this year. It was about 6 degree F when we started and was about 20 degrees F by the time we reached the summit just before 1 pm. (We didn’t get as early if a start as your team).

    I just climbed Adams (September 30th) after the first major snow storm of the season. It was really nice to be able to be on the snow. I had done a mid-summer ascent back in 2009 and I definitely remember the scree and loose rocks. We followed a solo climber so the snow was almost completely untrammeled when we ascended.

    That was a big pack for a big climb and some great wildflowers along the trail you took. The higher you got the better the views became. I now see the need for the big packs, did not realise it was a 2 day hike and it looked real tough going in the snow and over the lava field. Mouth dropping views from the summit and what a brilliant way to get off the summit to the lava field lol, awesome fun! Cheers Alan

    • @WithinHikingDistance
      @WithinHikingDistance 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The lava field was difficult as every step sank in the gravel. The views were fantastic along the way and kept getting better. The overnight stay calls for a big pack and also having all the layers if the weather turned. It was a fun climb. Thank you, Alan!

    Very informative video! Thank you! I have a few questions as my partner and I will be climbing Adams in July 2022. What tent did you use? Is there a visible trail from the trailhead to lunch counter and from lunch counter to piker’s peak or did you follow random footprints in the snow?

    • @WithinHikingDistance
      @WithinHikingDistance 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The tent I used was a Big Agnes Rattlesnake SL3 (about 5lbs). It'll be hot in July so a lightweight tent will be fine. The trail is visible from the trailhead to lunch counter. There isn't really a marked trail from the lunch counter to piker's peak, but you'll be following everyone else's footsteps. July is a busy month so you won't have any difficulties following the trail. Download a trail map on Gaia or CalTopo if you want double check your route as you go. Have fun!
