To pop scales i just use another swiss army knife, the sharpened bit on the can opener works well enough. Ive got the Recruit and the Solo (a larger one bladed knife, similar to that pruner) as gifts when i was very little, they were my first knives, the start of a lifelong hobby. I still use the recruit to carve wood and the solo stays in my first aid kit.
