    Dave....Thank you so much for making this video. I recently acquired a super cool Goldstar PCD-N1. I fixed the CD player and most of the cassette deck (waiting on an idler), but when I buttoned it back up the FM radio no longer worked. Using your hair dryer method I was able to make the radio work temporarily by hitting the tuner board which gave me hope. I searched the area until I found a broken solder joint by the tuner dial. I was ready to give the thing away because I've got no use for a deck that doesn't have a working radio, but you saved the day!

    I find your videos very interesting. I am always amazed why you don't clean your iron before soldering. I worked with Philips Electrical and we were always told to keep a clean iron.

    Just some constructive input, 35 yrs of tv serv....ground conn should be among the first contacts to check and resolder....
    probably 50% of cold solder joints end up being ground conns....
    good job.!!

      Grounds number 1 point of failure. Especially on plasma TV.

    Great fix! Little bit noisy tuning button but it's understandable.

    Sounds like a fair few dry solder joints in the fm section of the tuning capacitor terminals.
    I've had that happen b4 on both am and fm bands on radio tuners.

    That seemed to be sort of a common problem on systems with tuning capacitors mounted to the PCB, i believe it was due in part to flexing caused when tuning by the tension exerted by the dial string and normal thermal expanding & contracting over the years, fixed a good number of these kinds of troubles by resoldering.

    You probably should adjust the receiver trim screws 2 and 4 for fm maximum reception on top of the tuning gang capacitor.

    Just finding this now. My Pioneer TX-8500ii has the same issue. Not being a tuner guy, I was thinking alignment, but I'll check all the connections on the main board as you did.
    Some thoughts/comments:
    1) I assume you're using a hair dryer? I have a heat gun. Don't they make attachments to focus heat in the same manner as focusing cold with the Dust Off?
    2) Around 12:11 I see a solder bead bouncing about when you're tapping the PCB. I've seen semi-loose solder beads cause issues in the past and always look for them.
    3) My Pioneer has the RF stage inside a "cage", so hitting individual components with the freeze is nearly impossible.
    Thanks for this vid!

    its always good to look on the board with a spot maginfy glass and resolder all.cold joints. i wouldn't press down on a board like you did or tap it with a screwdriver. the best thing you could have done was use the continuity tester from solder point to solder point.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +nigel mahabir What's wrong with tapping on the board. Not like it is a high power unit that has components that can be caused by arcing.

  • @sweetcup6694
    @sweetcup6694 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You probably busted a lot of solder joints when you were banging on it with the screwdriver.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Actually that is the way to localize faults. If a connection breaks from tapping it then the joint was faulty to begin with as if they are bonded properly they will not break. If that was the case every car on the road would have something go bad on every little bump and speed bumps wound completely disable the car.

    Sometimes I remove the old solder and then apply some flux and then re-solder the connections.

    Sir I have a sansui rz300 if switch stereo no signal,mono have a signal thanks

  • @DAVIDGREGORYKERR
    @DAVIDGREGORYKERR 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    would a BFR96 MOSFET based RF preamp boost the signal enough to solve this problem, I thought a BFR96 would work as you can connect a variable resister across the supply and a resister coming of the wiper to the G1 pin con control the gain of the antenna preamp also a de-coupling cap between G1 and ground will make the BFR96 work properly.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +DAVID GREGORY KERR All a preamp will do is bring up all the noise as well. This was a problem with the mixer if I remember correctly. Bad grounds. Not a signal problem.

    • @DAVIDGREGORYKERR
      @DAVIDGREGORYKERR 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a SDR radio that uses a QSD mixer that converts the signal to to an audio signal which gets digitized and subsequently gets fed into a DSP processor running in inverse IFFT mode which recovers the program material and sends it out to the output DACs then onto my amp.

    Finding that kind of fault is frustrating but if you stick with it you can usually come out ahead.

    Hello. I had a SR 2100 boombox from a friend. Inside is like brand new. I cleaned the switches with contact spray. AM radio works fine but FM does not play any station clearly. Every FM station has static noise. It has an antenna and it’s connected to the tuner pcb. I suppose the radio signal is good because my car radio gets all the stations. I also sprayed contact spray inside the tuning capacitor however did not fix the issue. So what can be the problem of the boombox?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Never spray any cleaner into a tuning capacitor or you will detune it permanently.

  • @nickfrench7372
    @nickfrench7372 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You actually would've sprayed into the fm oscillation coils,,,which put the station off the frequency.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't spray contact cleaner into oscillator coils or tuning capacitors. I have seen the results from consumers doing this. Had to flush out cleaner with tf solvent.

    • @nickfrench7372
      @nickfrench7372 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok,,I thought it was the cool spray affect that went into the oscillation coil which put the radio tuner off station. At least u had found a few dry solder joints on the circuit board that had caused the problem in the end. As I've had that happen b4 with dry solder joints in a few radio tuners in the past. Including uhf radio transceivers too.

      why do people like that always own the ones we are never sure about? Could it be their negative energy?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +PaulaXism Or they are in love with some old piece of crap for "semimetal" reasons, and they want to fix it forever. I used to tell people not to get married to old electronics.  Oh wait a minute, that was me getting married to old electronics when I agreed to fix something that should have never been fixed in the first place!.. Nevermind.Dam I am glad I left the repair business. Now I get to tell people, hey leave it with me. I will look at it and decide IF I want to fix it. If I say NO then that it is, end of discussion. I turn down stuff regularly, especially LCD TVs. I hate them. With the exception to power supply problems, and the off TCON board problem, most LCD troubles is a failure of the panel itself. Not repairable, so why waste my time.
