      I have an M3 Max 16/40 MBP 14” 48 GB RAM, 2TB SSD, so very similar to yours and I absolutely love it. I mostly do photo editing and image processing work on it and when I am at the office I hook it up to an Eizo 4K screen (which is a necessity for photo editing not only in terms of size but color accuracy) and whenever I am on the move I just take it with me and enjoy (like you said) its perfect size and portability. I keep track of memory pressure and CPU usage and for what I do 48 GB is just fine and ensures smooth sailing with no SSD swapping and in terms of CPU the Max is an absolute beast: I have had it peak to ~80% so far and have not experienced any thermal issues. I came from an intel-based Mac before this and OMG, switching to Apple silicon has been a nigh and day difference for me. I have only good things to say about the M3 Max 14” and if I could go back I would definitely buy it again. One more quick thing: you cannot really compare any MBP with an Air performance-wise as the former will always smoke the latter not only because of different processors but because MBP’s have active cooling and Air’s do not, which make a huge difference. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on your M3 Max!

    Reviewers noted the M3 ran hotter than the M1, and this was most obvious with the Max variant. They also noted that the M3 Max in particular overwhelmed the cooling system of the 14”, and often ran slower than the ‘Pro’ variant. Even when it was faster it was very very loud. Chances are you’ll be happier with M3 Pro MacBook Pro, very similar performance, much cheaper, less noise, and better battery life. If you actually need the M3 Max, you probably also need the cooling system of the 16”.

      I have the M3 Max 14 inch 14 core CPU 30 GPU, it never throttles, but yes, the fans can get loud if it set to max power, set to low power mode it’s likely faster than the Pro and near silent - so you get both options.

      event he 16inch which I have used every day since October last year, it CAN in some circumstances run hot and maxed out fans, if rendering out in handbrake etc, and uses all CPUs , if you use video tools box though it tends to use GPUS and doesn't get got, also Final Cut renders are not causing and heat stress. I use mine mostly one desk with two 4K monitors and it is fine. I always use the HDMI port as I am motels etc editing thus use hotel TV's as a second monitor or 3rd, and use an iPad as a second screen, and yes battery life is a awesome on 16inch. 14 inch screen is too small and I don't use it on trains or planes so I don't care about bigger footprint. I need MAX COOLING AND MAX BATTERY LIFE, and thats the 16inch.

    • @paulwoodward8265
      @paulwoodward8265 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@TheKimNeeper good point, low power mode is great, but if you keep that on all the time perhaps you could’ve saved some cash and got a smaller chip? Nice to have options I guess. Hoping the thermals on M4 will be better, we’ll see…

    • @f.coenen
      @f.coenen 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      If I may ask you all a question, since you seem to have either the pro or max chip. When talking about the laptop getting hot, when does it actually happen? As in, does it just get hot quickly or is it only under certain load? Thanks in advance.

    I’ve been using the M1 Max MacBook Pro 16” with 32GB of RAM since 2021 and it’s been great.
    It’s always a trade off with these devices.
    The pros and cons between sizes and performance benefits are always a trade off in my opinion.
    I do agree it’s a hassle to travel with the 16” instead of the 14”, though the smaller footprint is just great and I might consider upgrading to a 14” sometime in the future although it’s unlikely as the M1 Max has been serving me well for music production and some casual video editing with DR.
    I’m more keen on getting a more powerful Mac Studio instead of a new laptop.
    Great insights on this video! Thank you for sharing.

      2D video rendering and CPU heavy tasks don’t and won’t see a big difference for at least 4 generations of hardware. But the difference becomes evident when working with 3D graphics, modeling, and rendering like games, developing games, creating 3D graphical animations etc

    Just got the M3 Pro Max 14 inch, 36gb ram 1tb. 16 inch is out of the question for me as anything bigger than a 14 inch, I find it a hassle to bring around. I have only done software developement with Xcode and VS Code so I am not pushing it to its limits but I am starting to learn some Machine Learning so that would really test it. I saw some posts on reddit that macs only allocate 2/3 of its ram by default but there's a setting you can do in the terminal to set it even higher and leave 4gb for the system memory. So hopefully I can do some pretty useful LLM if I set it to 32gb.

    I love the 14” for portability and use ability in the situations you mention. However, I am still 16” for the battery, cooling, larger workspace for productivity etc. Also love the speakers on the 16. I rely heavily on Parallels to run many windows programs, and on the M3 Max 14 it was faster then my windows machine until an hour or two in and then it Boggs down. I think it’s the lack of cooling and resulting thermal throttling. So I have ordered the 16 m3 max to be delivered tomorrow. Replacing my M1 Pro MBP 16. Hoping that will do the trick. Thanks for the great content!

    If anyones looking to get an M3 MBP of any spec, look at the refurbed ones to help you save a buck for the same brand-new feel!
    Decided to get the base 14" M3 Max MBP and really was torn what to get between that and the M3 Pro model. But then decided to see if there was a refurbed M3 Max on their website and to my surprise there was. It was ridiculously cheaper than buying it new (saved around £600, and only £200 more than the higher M3 pro model) and I swear it looked brand new as if it was never touched. Love the M3 max for what I use it for though, no issues with it

    Great video. It really seems like software limitations of the iPad ecosystem is the only thing holding us back from fully transitioning to it.
    I e found a very efficient workflow with camera set ups to IPads- but it’s the software limitation in video editing that’s stopping me from just LIVING in the iPad. So it’s forcing me to still consider a laptop for editing on the go.
    It’s a tough pill to swallow 😅

    I’m actually caught in a bit of a bind,
    I have 2, 27 4K.
    It’ll cost me more to buy 2 32 inch or 2 ultra wide and arms + an m3 pro, than it would to buy a 3rd or 4th 4K 27 + m3 max from the Apple refurbished store.
    I hate that the M3 pro is limited to only two external displays, it should be at least three.
    I work from home, daytrade, run a business, manage projects for family and multitask a lot.
    I find that overlapping windows and constantly having to switch between stages and or command tabbing In perpetuity really grinds my workflow to a snail pace.

    I can agree to you, I made tests with 4 different macbook pro m3 versions, and thanks to Amazon I could send them back.....
    I had a 16 inch m1 before and sold it and since then I tried all version of the M3, but I am not happy.
    We have 2 Color Pro monitors from viewsonic and still a Mac Pro 7.1 fully loaded which runs also under windows better than our Dell machines in the studio.
    I have to say we are in the filmscanning and postproduction of old 8mm, 9.5mm and 16mm movies and here we need both worlds.
    But the 14" Macbook max M3 drived me crazy: the fans are running on small tasks and the MacPro stayed cool and did his work.
    The macbook air is nice for the road to use it for mails, word, excel, and netflix, but not more,
    so the M2 air was only one day in the studio and had to leave very quick, At the moment I will buy nothing new, and wait for the end of the year and the M4 in the macbook pro
    But one thing is stupid, the Minimum Ram should be 36 GB to choose and this is a price overkill from Apple

Ps . My 2014 Mac book pro still works just fine and is a testament to apples longevity and yes I still use 🥳🥳🥳
