    Two things:
    - I now want to make my own pair of wood sun glasses.
    - Can I borrow some clamps?

That came out looking really cool! I'm probably not the first to mention it, but I think the "lack" of curve was due to that you just cut the 2x4 in half. You "need" to remove material thick as what you plan to press together or the curve will be less than you expect.

Hi my name is hannah and I'm fifteen I've been watching your videos for a while now and I've always been interested in building things. In the past I have made a picnic table for my little sister. My loft bed. With a desk. And the platform for my king size bed now. I've made a few others but those are the one I'm really proud of. Watching your channel has really inspired me to get out in the shop and build what I want. I'm re doing my room and I want to make a bookshelf for all my things. But instead of the normal type shelves they are going to be geometrical and placed in random spots. I would really like your input on other things I could do to make it look better thanks for inspiring me.

Hey Bob, one thing you could do to strengthen those hinges is to soak them in ca glue. Of course, before spraying the laquer. The only problem is it might cause those spots to be a different color. I'm not sure how different the laquer and ca would look.

Really enjoying your videos and your approach to your builds. Without going through all the comments, I was wondering if you had thought of using steam before putting the glasses in the form? I had seen a different project that the person ending up boiling the veneers before putting it in the form, I think it was a guitar build. Maybe on the next pair you could see if it's worth it.

  • @bud7551

A trick I've used is doing all your cutting on a flat piece of plywood using the cnc then you can use a pressure cooker and a small vacuum bag to bend them into place after. It makes rounding the edges and shaping the frames much easier.

    Fun idea!
The magic to bending and curving veneer, is use a bottle with water and spray it onto the veneer until it's wet. Another way is using steam or just heat (or both) Check some acoustic guitar building videos, that's exactly how they bend the shape into a guitar.

Those are some slick shade dude! I purchased some bamboo sunglasses off Amazon last year, they are cool but since I wear a prescription set of glasses normally, I don't wear them anymore. You talked about making another pair, I'd say go for broke and make a few so you have different style. Different stains, wood, colors, the list goes on. I'm not sure if you can get fancy wood like purple heart in a thin veneer like that but I think that purple with a nice satin finish would look super cool. Or take something lighter like pine or ash and burn it so it has some of the grain burnt looking. You could make sunglasses for your whole family! Or, a Patreon/raffle prize?

  • @randalljohnson2
    @randalljohnson2 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Lens insertion goes smoothest if you start with the top edges in (top nasal and temple corners), the push the lower temple corner in, and work the lens in toward the lower nasal corner. On most frames that is the least dramatic curve and that makes it less traumatic to the lens and easier on the fingers. Your work looks pretty good. I am an optician by trade.

Great work as always! If you're going to do them a second time, you can maybe try to make the part where it sits on the nose a little softer/rounder/bigger. It looks to me like that is missing compared to the plastic ones and it would only add to comfort.

The clamping scene had me laughing pretty hard. I started to teach myself woodworking and the sunglasses project intrigued me. I know I need to buy more clamps even without your hilarious clamp comedy. Oc= Putting the Dremel in a vice and using it as a spindle sander was a trick I've been looking for. I'm Extremely limited on space so I have to come up with as many tricks as possible for the lack of equipment. I don't have a vice like that, but I was thinking I could make a special one part or two part enclosure or stand for the Dremel to accomplish the same thing. You are an amazing craftsman.

I am really shocked right now. My last school project was designing a glasses and I did it out of veneer and colored liner lamination. It looks really similar. Good job by the way!

I would love to see you work on something with Tested and Adam Savage. Love watching your content, Bob. The video production quality, the editing, the storytelling, and of course the making of things; I learn so much from your content. :)

I love sunglasses and those are the coolest pair I seen, if I had them I'd wear them all the time.

im a wood turner and call maker. I also deal with knife handle material. I always get wood stabilized. That would make the wood much harder. Its pretty much impregnated with resin (plastic). Stabilized wood would work really well.

Cool project! I'm curious about a couple of things: 1) Could you have used your CNC machine to carve out the shape more precisely? and 2) How about a slot on the top to just slide the lenses in? Of course some way to secure them, too.

Yeah, the CNC or laser would have made them more precise, but since the majority of people don't have those tools, I try to only use them when they're the only/or best option. Not sure if the contour of the lenses would allow them to slide through a slot in the top with out that slot being oversized.

That's really cool. I wonder if soaking the wood in water before laminating it would help it curve better…? Just a thought.

Nice! McMaster-Carr has a tiny brass hinge that could be epoxyed instead of the cut hinge, if you wanted.
