  • A second parent has come forward with concerns at one Milwaukee Public Elementary School. It's concerns she found so troubling, she pulled her student out a week into the school year before things got even worse.
Two weeks ago, we told you about Brooklyn.Brooklyn's mother, Johnetta Fort, contacted TMJ4 after her daughter was allegedly pulled out of her wheelchair by another student at Gaenslen Elementary.
Fort shared with us and showed pictures of Brooklyn's five teeth that were knocked out during the incident.
Jennifer Talley reached out to TMJ4's Jenna Rae after seeing that story.
"My daughter was actually a classmate of Brooklyn's in special education room 111. I knew Brooklyn, and I also removed my child from Gaenslen after she was mistreated and injured at school," Talley said.
Talley's six-year-old daughter, Franceska, is also non-verbal and uses a wheelchair part of the time, similar to Brooklyn. A week into the school year, Talley pulled her daughter out.

As a teacher I have the unpopular opinion that some children would do better in a dedicated special education school. Given staffing realities, it is simply impossible for most teachers to deal with special needs students, much less honor the contrasting IEPs of a half dozen students. Mainstreaming these students means that each one requires a paraprofessional to assist them, and that simply doesn’t happen. A special ed environment would allow for the smaller classes and individual attention that these children need to thrive.

This is the problem. They pack the rooms with children that have high needs and don’t give more support. The teacher is overwhelmed and the paras are paid less then McDonalds. The paras I see at my school are the ones being abused by violent kids. There is no excise for what happened to her sweet girl. But i hope parents realize public school are not the best place for a high needs child. They have to accept very violent disturbed children who can hurt their child. It should be required that parents know when this happens.@@kimberlywoodbury1739

Same. In the late 1970’s I was hit HARD in the back of the head by my fourth grade teacher, all the time.
One time, he hit me so hard that my head went foreword and hit the lip of the desk and I got a very fat lip and a bloody nose. His answer to the class about my bloody nose and lip ?? “Next time, she’ll know the answer when I ask it” (I didn’t know the answer to the math problem he wrote up on the chalkboard. )
It ruined my zest for learning, that year in school did…and from that day foreword (the bloody lip/nose day) I truly thought I was stupid. For years I though I was stupid. Was a horrendous experience. It defined my entire school experience after that. I just gave up. I quit trying all together.
Just terrible. Just thinking of it makes me terribly sad for me as a child. I was a very kind little girl, I didn’t deserve that. No child should be hit or beat because you can’t understand something.

Like bruising is bad enough, and I am glad this mother caught it and is able to do what she can, which sounds pretty substantial and I am glad she contacted the media to confirm the other mother's suspicions, but the other mother's daughter...........TEETH knocked out, not even one MULTIPLE TEETH!!!! My goodness, these two instances alone should have the cops/CPS/ SOMEONE of authority all over that school. Absolutely unacceptable. Heartbreaking. My kid is low needs, but I am still terrified of people taking advantage of him since he won't talk about anything that goes on at school.... absolutely unacceptable. Yeah he is super frustrating sometimes, but I can't see doing anything more than accidentally bruising him from time to time by, idk... grabbing him a bit too abruptly to prevent him from getting hit by a car!! Ya know?! Geeze. I am actually the one often getting injured from the kids trying to keep them safe or just play with them, lol, or idk we are somehow banging heads, stepping on my feet, or they are throwing something hard at my face, lol....😅 Help me.... But seriously put cameras in especially special needs classrooms! Absolutely no excuse, and if there are true accidents happening it protects the workers too and can help with training to prevent future injuries...smh.

The teachers absolutely ignored it and said “they’re kids”. I was covered in cuts and bruises on a daily basis. I have no memory of that school BESIDES the attacks on the playground.
My second school was almost as bad, but verbal rather than physical. Except the teachers. They began to get physical with me and by brother because my brother was in the special needs class and I was on the bus with him.
I homeschool my kids for now. They can go to public school when they beg me to, or when they’re at least in middle school. Im not risking anything on them.

I don’t care how much a parent wants their handicapped child to be “normal”, they just won’t ever be. My brother has cerebral palsy and there was a school nearby dedicated to children with special needs. The entire staff had special training to take care of the children and there was extra medical staff on site. My brother loved it and made many friends there. He didn’t care about being at a “normal” school and us girls were envious of his school. They had alot of fun and the kids still learned. My brother went on to a regular school for JH & HS and has worked for IBM since he was 21, without a college degree. This was also a public school so no extra charge to the families. Regular schools are just not equipped to handle children who need more care and supervision and we shouldn’t expect it of them. My brother’s elementary school prepared him to stand up for himself in JH & HS and to not care or just ignore kids who were bullies. He never had any problems. We need to bring these schools back.

My daughter who is not special needs, was yanked by her arm and tossed outside the classroom by her teacher one year. When she came home with the bruises I went to school and yanked her teacher outside by her collar. She and I had a firm talk about the dangers of putting her hands on my daughter ever again. I let her know how lucky she was that moment that I didn’t kick her ass. When the Principal showed up he and I had a talk about the coverage the school was going to get over the incident. He interviewed some classmates and it was confirmed my daughter was accosted by the teacher. Her classroom assignment was changed and we had no problems with my daughter the rest of the year. If my daughter had deserved to be thrown out of the classroom, I would have done it. Yes, in front of her classmates, but I’ll be damned if I let anyone put hands on my child. The teacher was reassigned to another school at the end of the year. She also had to have an aid in the classroom at all times. Some people should not be teachers. I recognize the frustration and the patients needed to be a teacher. But putting your hands on a child is not acceptable standing by and watching someone else put their hands on the child is not acceptable.

I feel so sad for this mother, but the point she made about not having a certified teacher is not the school’s fault, but the fact that there are no teachers. The profession has fallen so hard that no one wants to be a teacher anymore. The pay is bad, and the respect is non-existent. Until things change, people are going to be finding many classrooms without teachers. So sad.

Kindergarten I had a teacher who locked me in a wooden box hidden behind her box that had a master pad lock with a key. You couldn’t stretch your legs so you had to keep your knees bended you couldn’t keep your back straight. There was no hole in the box other then one circle hole the size of a 5 year olds hand. I was putted in that box for the first time from telling on a girl that was a bully that one day I had to sit in that box throughout lunch without anything to eat forced to watch the other kids eat from the hole behind the teachers desk. She forced me in there by my hand. I never felt so betrayed. She told me she was going to talk to the girl to. Came back to tell me I’m in trouble. I’m 18 now and there has been more teachers in different schools who hit me or mis treated me but this was one of my worst times in school other then the time I had a man in elementary school hold my hands down and scream at me while I was crying I’m sorry. I been in special education all the way to graduation.

It would seem because of your circumstances, now that you're an adult you should be able to bring charges against teachers and schools. I hope that's true, although it might be very stressful. They should have to pay for counseling to help you get through damage they have done to you, and the destruction of a future you could have had with the correct education and treatment. I hope the best for you.

And now they want to dismantle the Dept of Education? This will crush all the children with IEP’s or any special learning disabilities & leave no one to support or advocate for the kids. There won’t be any funding & then the few good teachers left, will leave too. I’m so sad for our children-they deserve so much more.

In Minnesota I witnessed through DHS the tendency to only rename programs even though a public announcement was made that informed the general public that the program was being discontinued. Only parts of a program would be discontinued and a few new approaches to service were added. The motivation to make changes in this manner? I’ll guess it’s a cautious attempt to avoid admitting to failures and other degrees of neglect. That’s how government entities behave; public schools transfer problem teachers, HMOs relocate problem doctors to other clinics (try so hard to support Independent clinics!)

Its also funny how i apparently "started" every fight and i was the only one who got inschool suspension!!! Zero tolerance blanket punishments that they usually dole out to both parties involved suddenly became very onesided for some strange reason!!!

I'm thankful I live in New York state sometimes because in a situation like this the state would require the current School district to provide busting to the new school district. Or they would make the school pay for sending the girl to a special school and there are so many special schools for kids with special needs in our state. Too bad she had to sell her house and move just because the school can't adequately keep her daughter safe. But as a parent you will do anything for your child and she is the epitome of that saying

I have no disabilities and public schools are terrible. I was picked on by white kids that had parents with money. The parents were senators and mayors so they wanted to look inclusive by sending their kids. The black kids were terrible to me because I was white. So white and poor doesn't go well in public school. I was more physically hurt by black and Puerto Rican kids. Hair pulled, pushed, kicked, things thrown at me etc. Couldn't tell my parents because they were already poor and neglectful.

No child is physically, morally, or emotionally safe in public school regardless of ability--especially children in diapers who cannot communicate. You cannot advocate for a child unless you are physically present 100% of the time.
