This story happened in the 1940’s and Mr. Ballen tells it in such detail it’s almost like he was at the actual scene. He’s got such a gift for storytelling!
@@Eric-lp3ic Yeah...story from like 80 years ago, set in an isolated and superstitious town, with no evidence and most of the residency gone for the night. Exactly the sort of story a local legend or conspiracy theory is based on. Despite people's misgivings of cameras being everywhere, I do think it helps keep some of the shadows of ignorance at bay...which might be the very reason some people are hell bent on making up their own shadows.
Maybe he is a time traveler or a vampire so he has been present to all of them 🤣🤣🤣 he even knows what the animals felt like [story of the druggie bear]
I don't know why but every time you say "okay let's get into today's story" and do the gesture with both hands together...I nod my head back like you're right there. Please always keep this personal intimate way of delivering stories.
He has made the greatest community without even trying. I imagine people that don't have many friends will be really enjoying how this community responds and isn't toxic like every other TH-cam community. Yous are all cool as shit
For me it’s “because that’s all we do”.. doing the head tilt and hand gestures along with him is so engrained in me, its as natural as breathing at this point… I have become one with the power of Ballen 😆
That pain must have been excruciating, and the fact his sister had to watch her brother quickly and painfully melt in front of her actually has no words to describe that. May João rest in peace. I wonder if we will ever know what happened to these people?

Duuuuude. I was at work listening to you. My co-worker came in and I stopped the video and explained that I like to listen to story-telling while I work. My co-worker said "You should listen to this guy named Mr. Ballen". I got all kinds of excited and re-started the video. We both couldn't say enough wonderful things about you. AND we both feel that the story about George Bush was the most profound story we have ever heard.
One of the things I realized is that he made sure they knew that no one was to blame. He didn't want anyone falsely accused of something since it would be easy to blame the few people who might not have gone.
Or he couldn’t fully comprehend whatever the figure he saw was and could only describe it literally as “no one” since it didn’t look anything at all like what a normal person, or a “someone”, would look like to him.
He described it as something not of this world because it WAS something not of this world. In fact, it may have not even been real and was most likely a hallucination caused by whatever was effecting him.

@@SeatLeonMK2 Yup, good call! I just find it odd that he left it as a mystery considering his narration of events is usually pretty thorough. Thanks for feedback.
RIP Joao. As someone who has lost a loved one violently and horrifically I love the way you take the time to describe and humanize the victims in your stories.
I'm sorry you had to lose a loved one that way. No one should suffer that trauma. A lot of these true crime/strange events channel's forget they're talking about real people who had friends and families and people in their communities who loved and relied on them - that's a big part of why I love Mr. Ballen so much.
Some more information I found here in Brazil: There is an interview recorded in 1974 with João's cousin who was by his side on his deathbed, it is almost 45 minutes long but is in Portuguese. According to his cousin the story is a little different, for example it says that he was hit by light when trying to open the window and that after being hit he walked about 2km to the house of the first person who helped him. This cousin of his did not describe his skin as purple but rather white. Another thing is that apparently where there was clothing it was not burned. This cousin of his, who was a very simple person, described it as "cooked" and not as "fried" as one would think. Another thing is that the local people often saw lights in the sky and that shortly after the incident, his cousin saw two lights near his house.
After a busy day, João returned home at 7pm and found it empty and dark and, tired, decided to take a shower. On the way to the bathroom, he reported that a flash came from somewhere, crossing the rooms of the building and hitting him squarely. Immediately, João felt his body burn from head to toe. Probably It is a lightning, just It.
I need your stories right now. I lost my husband last week and the diversion is badly needed. Thank you for all you do for people who are victims of violent crime. My husband was a police officer and I know he would have appreciated what you and your listeners have done to help
I live in Brazil. My grandpa and Grandma lived through this times. They actually lived in farm areas and told us that "fireballs" used to sometimes hunt and burn people. Great work as always Mr B. Hugs from Brazil.
@Goosetooth I've never seen or heard of electric burns progressively get worse over time, while having no initial burn marks, or having skin boil off hours later after turning purple. I've also never heard of anyone having a feeling they were being watched by ball lightning that followed them home, if that part of the story is real at least.
I have Amazon Prime and love to listen to your Medical Mysteries while driving, but there is not the slightest possibility that I will pass up a chance to watch you tell a story. The physicality of your storytelling with its animation and gesticulations are a huge part of the Mr Ballen storytelling experience. It’s You Tube for me all the way. Thanks for all that you do.
This is one of those stories that basically disappear into the abyss of time since no evidence can be collected from something that old. Such an absolute tragedy and I hope no one else goes through what João went through. May he rest in peace.
@@wrosebrock this is not BS. It really happened and was all over the news here in Brazil. There's no evidence It was caused by aliens or anything supernatural, but the story is true. You can even find his death certificate on the web.
It's no accident that Mr Ballen became so big so quickly. Tons of detail and captivating (and mostly unknown) stories. The Kandahar Giant definitely being my favourite so far.
It's odd you say mostly unknown and then mentioned the Kandahar giant because I had heard that story 10 times before mr. Ballen ever told it. I think what is mostly Unknown about the stories is mostly unknown to you. If you read the comments you'll notice many people add to the stories or talk about how it happened near where they live, or that they knew someone involved. I will agree with you however that he does a great job telling the stories. The only person who told the Kandahar giant story better was one of the men who claimed to have been there in an interview. Kind of not fair at that point. LOL
I accidentally came across one of your videos the other day and now I can't stop watching them, Your story telling abilities are absolutely phenomenal and I absolutely cannot wait to binge watch all of your videos!
I feel bad for his sister. What she witnessed, no matter the cause, must have been utterly terrifying. Especially since it was happening to her own brother Edit to add: nearly 3 hours after I posted this comment, people are piling on to me in the replies saying I do not feel bad for the guy. I don't know what made you think I did not also feel bad for him by simply stating that I felt bad for his sister. I do.

@hunterleigh4216 It's not real, dummy, stop believing everything you see or read on the internet. Mr. Ballen is just a storyteller, he'll take the most interesting urban legends or rumors on the web and present them as real to draw you in. But they are as real as a horror film that is presented as "based on real events"... news flash - these movies are never based on anything even remotely real. It's all about squeezing money from easy to manipulate sheep like you, who believe in everything.
My grandmother's brother had a desease that made his limbs, Skin, and flesh fall off. They were in a rural part of Cuba so there was no way of testing anything, it was also in the 1940's. She said he used to sing to her all the time, and all the while. She said he was the toughest person she ever knew, and my grandmother was the toughest person i have ever known. This was in Pinar Del Rio, same time frame. They assumed it was a Cancer, but i will never forget when she told me this, and when i saw the name of the video here i had no idea how similar the symptoms would be.
All Joaw wanted was to spend Carnival in peace and quiet in nature, fishing with his buddy. Instead, he got anything but peace and quiet. Poor man. At least he was able to tell his story before succumbing to his injuries. I can’t imagine how absolutely horrifying it would be to see your own flesh just….fall off your bones while experiencing unimaginable pain from it.
I felt the same, why him? Who was he to deserve such a horrible fate? Or was it that he was a “nobody”? That his village was so small that the attack wouldn’t get much attention or even if it did it wouldn’t get far. Such tragedy for such a man who was doing the least amount of to our world.
I have a feeling the shock he'd be in would help somewhat - thankfully our bodies will shield us naturally from some horrors. It would still be horrific, don't get me wrong - but I imagine it may have been more traumatic psychologically for the sister, especially since she had to live with it afterwards. a horrible situation every which way.
Every September/October now (since 2020!), I kick off the season specifically with the Supernatural/Halloween videos from the MrBallen channel, and it’s that time of year again! This is exactly the type of story that I subscribed for. The true crime genre is oversaturated. Everyone is doing it. This is old school MrBallen and I'd really love to see more stories that fall into the unexplainable/paranormal category.
@@Emma88178 Are you kidding me? He went on the longest trek of true crime for awhile there. He's just starting to get more into the groove of what initially brought in his mass amount of his subscribers.
I agree that the True Crime genre is becoming increasingly over saturated with the same stories/cases over and over. That being said I branched out from my favorite channels and found creators out there who are just as awesome but less well known. They have new cases I’ve never heard before or they tell in a totally different manner that made it new again to me. I agree that Mr. Ballen has a great mixture of true crime, dark and mysterious content! It’s his storytelling format and content that has shot him to the top. I’ve followed him for a while now and watched every single episode he put out when I first subscribed. I spend way too much time on TH-cam listening to sooo many cases or stories. If anyone wants recommendations on other true crime channels that are just not as well known but should be….I’m happy to share them with a small description of their unique formats. Some of them that live outside the United States have been great because they have content that aren’t as well known to the US. I recently started watching all of Kimbyrleigha’s channel! She is very talented. I have a lot more just ask ❤️
MrBallen is the inspiration for my Storytelling, Writing, and my Antagonist Characters in my WIP Story Projects! He is a Horror Genius, not only being able to truly project emotions... but also that intensity of the situation! He is good in Self Control in terms of Storytelling! He is incredible! Mrballen... if you can read this, we all love ya man! Much respects to you!
In Uganda it's usually on Sunday in the afternoons when your story comes on my timeline. You can't imagine how many times I keep refreshing my feed for it and the ecstasy I feel when I see there's a new upload. Oh man, already looking forward to next week's episode.
Hahaha! I’ve done that plenty of times myself just waiting for it to drop! I’m in Florida,in the USA, but I also love a good MrBallen story! Be well! 🤗
Wow, I'm Brazilian and I had never heard of this story before. I've heard of the legend of the Boitatá, and it's in fact one of the most commonly known pieces of folklore in the country. Over the years, there has been many incidents regarding UFOs and alien encounters reported in the country, like the Varginha incident, but this story is definitely a new favourite of mine. Thanks for tackling one of our tales Mr. Ballen, this was an absolute blast to listen to! Poor João, though.
You are awesome man,I listen to your stories everyday while i work...your voice and personality and dark antics hits the spot, especially when I work the graveyard shift...peace and knowledge
Mr Ballen has the best form of storytelling. He'll go into detail about things so you can picture it in your head, he'll begin to speed up when there's action happening or it's a tense scene, it's like reading a fantastic book. Love it, Mr Ballen!
I had never heard of this story before, even though I'm from Brazil! I'll definitely deep dive to find out more theories about what happened to João. Also, I'm so glad I clicked on this video, because the entire atmosphere of this story was so perfectly depicted! I can actually imagine my grandparents telling me similar stories and popular tales that every Brazilian heard when they were young. Boitatá is one of the most common tales that we've been hearing since we were kids, and these stories about "paranormal" incidents in small towns are also sooooo familiar to me! I am actually from Northern Brazil, where the the other "UFO" case happened, and that is one of the stories my grandpa used to tell me ❤
I agree, this was my first thought. Radiation is the only thing I can think of that would do something like this, and it couldve caused the paranoia too.
I tried the podcast and it just wasn't the same experience. Your body language and your animated nature when you tell the story along with the subtle visual effects you ad in youtube just make for a completely different experience and I am just so much more drawn in.
I completely agree! The podcasts are good but I also prefer the videos because of the way he tells the stories, his hand gestures and facial expressions just make the storytelling even better.
It's bittersweet..a mystery is a fantastic thing, but to have lost so many lives to this mystery is a tragedy without a villain. Whether or not we ever find out what happened to these people, it will not bring them back- my respect to all these people who lost their family.
You don't know it. But you your mother and your storytelling have saved my life. I've been better mentally for a good while now. Thank you for your contribution to life sir. Thank you for your service. And thank you to your parents for creating and raising an amazing person.
You know what they say, " one unbelievably dark, twisted and terrifying story a day keeps the doctor away" 😂. Just kidding, mrballen is awesome, i can agree with you there as his channel has been positive for me too.
Isn’t it cool? It’s a leftover trait from our ancestors we needed it in the beginning to feel predators who were stalking us I read that on a science channel and It also said a high percentage of the time if you feel eyes looking at you it’s because they are super creepy
I knew this case from Pablo Villaruibia , he is from Brazil and wrote it in a book named in spanish " las luces de la muerte" he appears sometimes in a very famous mystery tv show in Spain
@@ootka731 they meant the "demon core". it was a nuclear core that was used for experiments, and ended up going critical (aka causing a huge wave of radiation), killing two people.
Somewhere on TH-cam the effects of a neutron bomb are explained by the guy who invented it. This guy seems to relish in talking about it in a disturbing way that can only be described as demonic.

We are currently camping and my oldest 2 kids love listening to Mr.Ballen by the campfire. Our favorite part of the day! My husband, who is an avid reader, loves listening as well! Very gifted in the storytelling department!
There were inconsistencies with the extent of Joāo's injuries. Although there were reports of flesh falling off, his brother reported it as only his hands and face being burned, with no flesh falling off, and the doctors also only reported it as burns consistent with radiation, no skin falling off in chunks. His clothing remained intact and unaffected, which would be inconsistent with being hit with a big beam of indiscriminate light. If it was simply his face and hands that took the brunt of it, ball lightning is a possibility. He stuck his head by the window, and was struck in the face and head by it, and saw the extreme blinding light of an electrical volt. It would also explain why his hands were charred to a black, clawlike crisp, beyond recognition, per his brother. There was a nearby mine, with tales of mysterious fireball creatures for years. Mines have pockets of methane that can catch on fire and create fireballs. Perhaps, he was burned by one of these methane fireballs, his hands took the brunt of the fire, his face took the majority of the heat and gasses, before it burned out. Sudden flares from the mine were what they saw as monsters. These mines were everywhere in Brazil, which could account for the other cases as well. I'm just happy that he didn't suffer in pain in the end. May he rest in peace.
The injuries are inconsistent with *conventional* radiation burns as those are either caused by UV rays (sunburn) or by x-rays (like with nuclear events like fukishima or atomic bombs). They are consistent with gamma rays however. Gamma rays would simply leave basically everything unaffected and with minimal fallout, especially in a concentrated beam. It would only affect living organic matter due to concentrations of iron, potassium, calcium, carbon and water in addition to the innate electro magnetic field of living things. Even then, the radiation would effectively disappear from where it hit in his home within minutes or hours. It would rapidly degrade structures like skin, mucles tissue and veins and arteries while also coagulating blood due to the build up of cells that are radioactively shredded into proteins, which would explain why he survived for so long without bleeding out and why his skintone changed as without oxygenated blood, his skintone would quickly change. The muscle would liquify before the skin, as the melanin would protect the skin cells a lil bit more, until it degrades and bursts in blisters from the increasing pressure of the liquified muscle. Nerve cells, being made up primarily of fatty acids, would be mostly unaffected as they contain less water and less dense materials like iron. Meaning the entire time your nerve endings would remain intact and your brain doesn't turn into soup within seconds, meaning the nervous system functions well enough to receive pain signals still, but without blood vessels intact enough to carry endorphins throughout the body you'd feel *everything* with no pain relieving hormones in the body. Also no hormones would be able to be sent to the rest of the body to send it into shock. You'd still be able to move as some muscle tissues would remain and the ligaments and joints can still retract and extend. His injuries as described are very consistent with what would happen from exposure to concentrated gamma rays, not thermal nor electrical burns. Thermal burns would kill all the nerve endings and electrical burns would leave tell tale signs like inability to move, melted eyes, blood boiling and causing it to explode out of the extremities, in an instant. Bonus bit of info, gamma rays would turn certain structures into nuclear fallout, which would cause thermal burns in places like the extremities, and as those ions degrade into less dense atoms and compounds, some would be toxic, potentially even causing exothermic chemical reactions in the extremities causing further thermal burns. Trust me on this stuff, I was in CBRN in the marine corps. I had a weird fixation on wierd morbid shit like this in case weapons become developed from them. Like aerosolized elemental sodium (very very scary shit. It sets your blood on fire from the inside, as well as any and all mucus membranes and sweat, leaving you to scream in pain until yout esophogeal tract is burnt to a crisp and you just writhe in pain while only being able to meakly wease in pain)
@@goodbyemr.anderson5065 I was simply listing off the effects of concentrated gamma radiation exposure, and saying his injuries as described more closely match. There is no direct evidence, because who tf is gonna willing expose themselves to hyperlethal amounts of concentrated gamma rays. Also, nuclear events, which are the leading cause of radiation related deaths, aside from skin cancer caused by the sun, are all caused primarily from x-rays, which are less energetic and kill in weeks to a couple of months. However, some very similar effects happen, but much more slowly. Like the dude who melted on a molecular level in a japanese hospital following the fukishima meltdown, dying after 68 days of excruciating pain. His skin turned purple, then blisters began forming, bursting open, skin began falling and sloughing off. His blood was basically jelly from all the blood cells being turned into proteins. His body was mildy radioactive as it itself became fallout, causing further radiation damage. He had to undergo numerous blood transfusions to stay alive as his blood was very thick, even being resusitated numerous times. The radioactive particulates caused minor thermal burns within his body and extremities, before the affected tissues sloughed off. Eventually he died because all his blood vessels no longer had the integrity necessary to carry blood to his brain without rupturing and he died. Like I said, this all happened slowly over the course of 68 days. Yes, he felt everything and reported a constant burning sensation when not on pain killers. Gamma rays would cause much more ...expedient and violent results on organic material, whilst leaving behind minimal traces of radioactivity in the environment except in living organisms. Don't ask me how he received the dose of gamma rays, because that's the big mystery.
That was so heavy Mr B !! The way you get right into the story makes me feel like I'm actually there watching it unfold. My heart breaks for those that have suffered that tremendous amount of pain. My fav story teller of all time 👌💯
There’s a skin disease a lot of rural Brazilians have, especially in the rural agricultural villages. The sun literally breaks down or “melts” their skin. It could be that this guy got it from years of exposure, and didn’t know he had it, went out fishing in the sun all day, and then suffered from it. It also makes people go blind, so could be the “light” he saw, which was just the delayed sun burning his corneas. Such a weird disease.

One of these days, Mr. Ballen is going to be the subject of one of his strange, dark and mysterious stories delivered in story format and the culprit will be the like button.
He didn't die painfully. He was at peace in regards to physical pain when he died due to the extreme amount of painkillers. You would have to be to ask for a drink of water as your face is falling off. I am sure it was unspeakably quick also, which most likely didn't give him time to dread it. He went in a way I can only hope to, however his injury which caused his need to pass was nightmarish and abominable especially bc he was so alone during.
I think my most favorite thing about MrBallen is how he organizes the stories he tells. He has such a great way of organizing the stories (the order in which he tells different parts of the story, character backstories, events, thoughts etc) that my mind can fully absorb the story and stay engaged. I can have huge difficulty organizing my own plans and thoughts, and to be able to listen to stories in a way even I can fully follow and understand... I appreciate MrBallen very much! 😊
This case has happened near by where I live. A couple of hundred miles. But In 1977 there was a UFO attack on an entire population in the Municipality of Colares in the State of Pará, where there were even people dying. The Brazilian Air Force initiated a task force that was named "Operação Prato". There is a lot of mystery involved, including the sudden suicide, years later, of the officer, then in charge of the operation, just when he claimed to some Ufologists that he would reveal secrets of the case. . That's worth a Mr. Ballen story to tell.

@@pashaperry296 The "j" would be like something close to the "g" in "rouge". The rest of the name is similar to the "oun" in "round." The name is one syllable, not the two that Mr. Ballen is saying.
This sounds like acute radiation poisoning. Bright light, feeling of burning without burns, parts of the body falling off, and the quickness of death. This also could be like the Japanese power plant worker, and it sounds similar to the way the man in this story died.
I’m guessing you’re talking about Hisashi Ouchi, the difference between these two stories he died after 83 days, and it sounds like this guy died after only a few hours
@explorer The interesting thing is that he clearly didn't bleed to death. Despite his body falling apart. I would expect that, if the body is this damaged, that he would just start bleeding profusely. If his flesh is falling of his bones, than how are his veins still intact. That doesn't sound like radiation to me.
@explorer wrong. Stop spreading misinformation. He actually wanted to stay alive for the sake of his family and although he wanted to just die, he preferred to be selfless and stick it out for his families sake because he was hopeful. The doctors and researchers were very transparent with his family and would have 2+ hour meetings every day discussing their course of action and changes along with informing the family of any changes. The family even moved into the hospital waiting room and were living there the whole time he was in the hospital and visited with him often. Do some research before you vilify the brave and selfless doctors.
Really nice to see a Brazilian story. Awesome video as always MrBallen. We love your videos here in Brazil. Just one small thing, in São Paulo the forest is called Mata Atlântica (Atlantic forest) that has the remaining Pau Brazil, a rare tree that Portugal got a lot at the colonial age. Some call that the RainForest but its not quite that in this region.

Some more information I found here in Brazil:
There is an interview recorded in 1974 with João's cousin who was by his side on his deathbed, it is almost 45 minutes long but is in Portuguese. Another thing is that the local people often saw lights in the sky and that shortly after the incident, his cousin saw two lights near his house.

so some military experiment for sure. They couldn't directly fire a radioactive pistol at him, but a wave is possible
After a busy day, João returned home at 7pm and found it empty and dark and, tired, decided to take a shower. On the way to the bathroom, he reported that a flash came from somewhere, crossing the rooms of the building and hitting him squarely. Immediately, João felt his body burn from head to toe.

Thank you this is, what would seem a more logical explanation to this mystery. Better call the Hardy Boys.
Thank you for this logical theory for what happened. Love Mr. Ballen but can't stand these stories that lean heavier into paranormal territory 🤣
@@QockNobblr There is no actual evidence to match your theory. sorry buddy but this was a waste of time to right all that.
It’s so exciting to get a new video from Mr. Ballen…who else remembers the good old days of “Four, even five times a week…”?❤
The good 'ol days! 😂❤🎉
I miss those days. 😢

I'm pretty sure he made a video about an experience he had.
@@lisafazio3437 But was the like button the culprit?
Mr. Ballen will have a lot to answer for, when it all comes down. The like button is biding its time.
Or one of his "fans". The commenters here sound very OFF.
This man experienced one of the most painful deaths I could imagine! Burning alive is one of my fears next to heights 😩
Me 2 apart from the heights bit
I'd rather be burned at the stake than get my head chopped off.
@@pandoraaaraseth1040 I think they mean the overall ordeal, what he went through sounds horrific.
@@pandoraaaraseth1040 According to the video tho, it took about 5 hrs for him to pass.. it wasn't quick unfortunately.
MrBallen's storytelling is impeccable, I lose track of time listening to his great stories
I’m going to have to set an alarm at night to remind me to go to bed at a decent time 🤣
Enjoy? I can’t get enough of your storytelling Ballen. I’d listen to you all day if I could. Best narrator of all time.
Agreed Mr Ballen is not wasting time to describe a story in detail and easy to understand.
I have trouble paying attention to long stories but he narrates in such a way that it’s so easy to follow. Love his ability to keep me engaged.
I like how Brazil is so big that for us a couple HUNDRED miles is like "Oh, it's just nearby" :P
@@LeonardoDNA 😄Indeed. But i believe that in USA people often travel crossing the country covering distance much bigger. To tell the truth, it is exactly 210 miles, the distance between Araçariguama and here . Araçariguama is right next to the city of my best friend from Veterinary College, who was born in Jundiaí.
That's what I was thinking... Some crazy condensed ray of radiation
and that's exactly what it was. I am pretty sure.
I’ve substantially improved my English with Mr. Ballen. Thank you, sir.
