Regarding taxi and them costing an arm and a leg ! I can understand that being an American you are not used to public transportation but Budapest has a very good public transportation system Cheap ,goes everywhere and very effective! No need for taxis 😊

Taxi does not cost an arm and leg. You're tourists, that's why they rip you off. But,you probably used an independent taxi. These people, like those waiting outside the airport, will rip you off and are specifically looking for tourists. I'm not a local, but I speak Hungarian. Makes a difference. Huge difference.

Taxi drivers are sheisters everywhere. I grew up in BP and now I live in the US for the past 42 years. To boot, I travelled the world and found that is is not a BP issue exclusively. Any big city and tourist area are full of scammers.

@@liquidnitrogen4991 that can happen every where in the world , its not only Budapest related. Also when in public transport from the airport i would put mu valuables in an inside pocket of my jacket or a cross body small bag that I have in front of me. Not in back pockets, not in back packs that I have no control over (plain logic).

I spent 2 days in Budapest last week. We pretty much spent the entire time up on Castle Hill on the Buda side. It was definitely more our speed (Wife and I are 50 and daughter is19). Thanks for this succinct overview of Budapest.I lived in Budapest and taught there during 2018-2019. I agree with much of your take-aways such as reasonable prices, etc. I would add that the transportation system is one of the best we've ever experienced anywhere, whether tram, train, subway or bus. Biking also is a great way to get around. I would disagree with your comment about smoking, however. We found that many natives smoke, so much so, that cigarette butts were everywhere. But if you're reading this, and haven't been to Budapest yet, IT'S A MUST SEE.

Orbán never declared Putin as his friend, just has normal relations with Russia. As you call many nations' prime ministers an "idiot" showes the narrow mind of todays leftists-liberals: when they have no thought, they try to humiliate the opponent. That's why Fidesz won the elections for the 5th time now (and 4th time in a row), because leftists has no idea, no talent and no plans about the future. Nothing to tell something positive to the nation. And far the best mayor of Budapest was the conservative Tarlós István. And anything that is built in Budapast is built by the Fidesz, but opposed by the leftists (Millenáris, Városliget, Magyar Zene Háza, Néprajzi Múzeum, sportlétesítmények. Karácsony is zero talent, big mouth). So I should be very silent instead.

Budapest became popular 10 years ago, when the previous mayor cleaned it up. Many liberal people live in Budapest and this mayor was a conservative. He was therefore replaced for political reasons. Now we have a stupid, clueless mayor who doesn't do anything, just politicking, but also badly. That is why the development of Budapest stopped three years ago. Unfortunately, today's mayor is not interested in his task of making Budapest beautiful, clean and orderly. Maybe in two years they will replace it and choose a normal one. But unfortunately the liberals choose for political reasons.
