I am a retired toolmaker. I really enjoy what the hobbyists do on You Tube. I occasionally offer suggestions just to make things easier, but in no way would my intentions be critical. I am a hobbyist now myself, and I look forward to what you do with your microscope.

Thank you very much Joe. I really enjoy learning from others. Hopefully us older generations can pass on what we learn to our young ones. It’s important and it’s important to have fun too

Hi Gilles! I have a similar microscope and now that I have a location where is it always out and available I use it quite a bit. In particular it's useful for examining tool cutting edges.

Personally I can't see getting $80 worth of use out of one of those, so I'll not be rushing out to order one, but I can't wait to see the rest of the project!

Those microscopes are handy in the shop.

Gilles, don't let the overly critical naysayers get under your skin -- they're not worth it. Like you said, this is _your_ hobby and you don't need to satisfy anyone's wishes other than your own. I watch your channel in order to see how you (and others here on TH-cam) go about solving whatever "problems" come up, especially how beginners succeed. I'm really looking forward to seeing what gear tooth shape you'll need to repair your protractor. And I'm looking forward to watching you make your gear cutter and the gear too!

Looks like fun, making a gear cutter that size. It will make an excellent video, if you are able to work around the camera. Take care, cheers!

Never listen to people who tell you you are doing it wrong, but listen to the ones who say had thought of doing it this way and then explain something you hadnt thought of. There is very rarely only one correct way, it is always the end result that is the only thing that matters, certainly in a nonprofit incentivised home shop.
As for microscopes in the home shop, they are great for seing those nasty little splinters that are sent to plague us.😬

Tks Chris. I knew I’d eventually hear of a 2nd reason for its use. Jackpot 😊. Gilles

If nothing else, the screen of the microscope will allow you to show the viewers what you're working on... And if your eyes are anything like mine... age related degeneration... you can also use it to read pill bottles and other things where the font is so small, it's like they're trying to make it unreadable.
