    Fun fact: The guy who played Carrot (Matheus Nachtergaele) was the only professional actor in this movie. All the other people in this movie were just normal people who were hired and trained on how to act in the movie. And then there's Knockout Ned, who's played by Seu Jorge, a really good and famous singer here in Brazil. Although, the movie would actually turn some of the people into actual professional actors, like the ones who played Angelica, Lil' Zé and Steak-n'-Fries

    25:34 when the kids talk about "Red Brigade" you need to understand the context: in Brazil the major criminal organization is called "Red Command". They are the worst thing you can imagine in terms of cruelty and violence. The timeline of City of God is 60 and 70's to the 80. The Red Brigade was born in that period and after that decade them they organized and became The Red Command, the principal criminal organization from Brazil. In 2000 to then they finally had a rival: PCC - The First Capital Command. Actually they kill each other around the country and put terror on the population.

    • @ggbalbs
      @ggbalbs 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      One of the most interesting facts about this criminal scenario is that it was created by prisoners who were fighting against torture in prison. During that time, Rio was totally under the control of the Milicia (criminal organization from police). Politician and police used terms like "Favela Owner" to define the crime, and by that point, it was becoming organized. The Milicia was the one who sold heavy guns to criminals, putting them in their hands. In other words, there is much more to Rio's violence than most people realize.

  • @emy4785
    @emy4785 3 ปีที่แล้ว +87

    Hi, I would like to explain some things about the movie and the actors:
    1. The actor who played the "Lil Dice" aka "Lil Zé" as a child is not the same as the one who interpreted when he was already adult.
    2. The producers of this movie wanted to show an exact image about what the life of the crime is like in the favelas. And it was so difficult to find trained actors for this kind of performance, they went to the Favelas and picked their own residents to interpret all these characters. For this, they taught the basics about acting and then finally got a good cast.
    3. The film tells the story of a boy who saw the world crime grow inside the Favela (this explains the first scene where they ask him to get the chicken, and he looks forward and back, where one side had police and the other had criminals).
    4. The little boy who took a shot at the foot had a genuine reaction. He said that the producers did not let the adult actors talk to the childrens. And they put him in a room and made him have the first contact with the Lil Zé interpret (it was scary and made him get afraid when they started to record the scene, resulting in expressions of fear and crying).
    5. Don't be shocked by the violence they show in this movie, the intention was to show exactly how things works in the Favelas.
    Great reaction!! 🇧🇷🤍

      thats actually a good comment to show how fucked up things are here in brazil, even if some favelas are really close to the noble areas, people that live at the noble areas dont see or experiece 1% off what happens in the favelas, maybe u get robbed. politicians only care about hiding it from the rich and the tourists, i know thats something common i believe in the entire wolrd but here in brazil shit is reeeeally messy. makes me happy to see people from others countries, especially rich countries, watching those films that can really show what most of the population here go throught in a daily basis.

When this movie was released, it was one of the favorites to win an Oscar for foreigner movie, but the academy rejected it for being "too violent" and "too fictional", "no country could be that violent". One review compared this movie to Goodfellas, so I went to see it back in 2002 when it was still in theaters. I still think it's one of the most amazing films I've ever seen. Interesting to note that the only actor who had credits to his name was the guy who played Carrot. Everyone else was an amateur (except Alice Braga). There was a documentary that came out in 2013 (City of God - 10 Years Later) that caught up with the actors. Interesting to note that the people who actually lived in Cidade de Deus didn't exactly like the original film and didn't want to relive the experience that many felt glorified the violence many of them survived.

    I know its been a time, but if you ever see this, I'm gonna state some facts about City of God
    One of the most impressive things about this movie is that the cast isn't of "well trained" actors, most of these kids were all citizen of the Favelas, part of a project to get of the streets. This is one of the reasons why all this looked so real and natural, because in a way, it was.
    For most of them (if not all) this work was their first enything in front of a camera. Unfortunatelly, for not knowing anything about the industry (and not knowing the huge success it would be), their contracts was a small amount of money. Most of them have great careers here, but some (like Lil Dice/Zé) not so much.
    Also, Zé is a nickname and stands por José, which is Joseph, so Zé pequeno (small, or little, yes)) would be Lil Joe. But I would translate it as Small Joe, it'd be more fitting in this context.
    Anyways. I loved your reaction and analysis.

    The story of "Cidade de Deus", which is actually a neighborhood, took place due to an attempt by the city of Rio de Janeiro to clean the city (a hygienist attempt), from the poor and blacks, removing them from the most valued from Rio de Janeiro and taking them to a distant region. The "City of God" was a neighborhood where the poor were thrown, a distant place, without infrastructure, without work, without leisure, with nothing and, as it could not be otherwise, due to all this abandonment, it became a crime scene! There was no work for everyone, there was no education, nothing. The parents, most of them poor and black, had many children and had to go out to work and the children were left there, lost and without assistance, crime co-opted them, obviously!
    Today crime in Rio de Janeiro is quite different. Practically those who command the crime are the militias (criminal police), who dominate the traffic, drugs, pay-TV (fraudulent), the supply of gas, electricity, commerce, everything! Everything nowadays is commanded by these militias, as I said, most of them police officers or ex-policemen! Crime has changed a lot! There is a strong connection between our current President of the Republic and the militias and organized crime! There was a "crime office" in the luxury condominium where the president lived, where the assassination of an important emerging black leader, Marielle Franco, was planned and executed! The right-hand man of the President's son, Queiroz, organized a scheme to steal the salary of employees of the municipality, Queiroz is a former policeman, with several crimes in his name (Bolsonaro's friend and his son, Flavio Bolsonaro)!

    If you get a chance you should watch City Of Men. Also from the same production team, with a lot off the same actors, but very lighthearted about 2 young Black kids growing up in the Hood of City Of God.

    The "Red Brigade" (Falange Vermelha) the kids are talking about in the very end was the criminal organization that took over the drug trafficking at Rio. They soon became Comando Vermelho, a dissidence that took over the traffic not only in Rio but also another states until the 2000s, when militias entered the dispute.
