    Bravissimo, maestro. That's filing. I had no idea that there were rifflers for metal. On wood, I use them all the time. I could have not blended those curves in wood without a riffler. In metal I would have been lost. Thanks a million for this series.

    Some extremely clever and well thought out pre-welding alignment setups. I would have never have thought of all that. And that multi radius blending takes a real eye for it so it comes out looking that well. Plus one hell of a lot of skill.A great deal of work but very satisfying once it's done. Obviously it's your project so ultimately your decision alone on paint or any other finish. It's supposed to be a working vise used for what it's meant for, but a mirror polished finish really would look great. This already is probably the most expensive BB Wilton Vise ever made given the time required to replicate an original one. I just hope whoever got it respects the time and effort that went into it. All that file blending is a good way to relax if one can spare the time. And I hope the extra parts were for making one for yourself.

    Great work on the blending Tom, I'm pleasantly surprised by how well it has turned out... no disrespect intended in that comment, the result is a testament to your skill and patience. I see others are commenting on options for the finish of the final product... my vote would be a non-painted finish that allows the "hand built" characteristic of the vise to be exhibited, it'd be a pity to hide all that work under a coat of paint.

    Master Ox: as you revealed the completed contoured side of the vise, my heart skipped several beats. ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL! Art and artisanship, form and function, utility and craft are ONE in your hands in that piece! You anticipated the effect it would have on the viewer, hence your perfectly-timed dramatic revelation of those understated yet still voluptuous metallic countours. Henry Moore ain't got nothin' on you, sir!If if I may be permitted to offer criticism as if I were actually qualified to do so: GREAT JOB!!!And great to watch, too!Kilroy has a good point about paint. Clear acrylic, maybe?

    Hey Tom, nice job it really came out good. When I saw the almost finished side I sat and thought of the people that I deal with who always give me grief for trying to do a good job. I guess there is a certain percentage of people out there who can tell the difference and also appreciate the extra effort and time that goes into something you're working on to make it not just good but great. It's to bad I don't come across enough people with this type of mind frame. I appreciate the time you have taken on filing your vise it inspires me to do the same with some of my homemade hobby work. Take care...

    cool work, lotta blending. being fairly close to a borax mine, the largest in the world, I've had the pleasure of working there subcontracted out to Borax, moving dirt, no ore. Once working the tailings (they are almost mountains,) during some slope failures, I bumped into a chunk of steel, so I dump it and low and behold it was a monster simplex vise, only the movable jaw was gone, with it was the top face kind of slanted (broke off) back at a 45' angle. I've had it for 25 years, lugging it around with hopes to get a jaw (or make one,) and fill it in with cast iron rod. Basically I have 25 years invested in working on this. The Borax mine that I found it in, was the result of surface borax in california that supplies the world with at least 40% of its borax. It was all over the ground, and digging down, just at the one mine, they're almost 800 ft deep, and a couple miles wide, talk about pushing the envelope to watch it bend, the ore is expected to last till 2050. Running around in the desert east of the sierra mountain range in the middle of 1800's had to of been the most bad ass thing there ever could be.

    Beautiful work with filing. Mr. Ox, you're a master craftsman.
    I really admire the skill and patience. I personally hate hand-filing, I just don't have it. I resort to one of the power methods usually. In this case it would probably be a die grinder... probably with a mediocre results. But what you've done is really beautiful.

    Awesome work. That is fine craftsmanship for sure. It would be neat to see someone invert the pattern and make forging dies to construct the same vise. A forged steel baby bullet would probably be a very strong piece indeed. :-)

  • @billlee5307
    @billlee5307 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very nice Tom. Makes me think you could work right along with the person who made the patterns for the original vise. I confess that I am a sucker for tools and machines from the thirties to about 1960. Lots of smooth curves and thought about how to make something that did the job, would last and looked good. I think the Walton bullet design that you are using as a model is a good example of what I am talking about. Thanks!

The tolerances are amazing, the finishing is something I've spent ages working out by myself. Oh TH-cam where have you been all my life. Thanks for the videos. Shame about the front gap but I guess matching the front claws to the taper would have been a fucker.

    Looking really good. All that file and shaping work - where's your apprentice at? Remember those days when you couldn't touch a machine except to clean it?
    Are you going to have the vise powder coated when it's complete? Want something beautiful, durable and different, then DuraCoat it in Clear so the natural beauty of the metal shows through. After all that hand work I would want to show it off and paint just covers it up.
    Cheers,
    John

      +James Kilroy Case hardening!

    • @jtkilroy
      @jtkilroy 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Dave Wood Of course a nice color case would be the ultimate finish. Issues arise when trying to color case pieces with multiple alloys. I am afraid, but could be mistaken, that the weld areas would not take a color case in the same way as the source material, ruining the finish.

    • @aserta
      @aserta 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +James Kilroy I'm in for the 'anything but paint' option.
      Pity case hardening is out of the question, and yes, the welds would show up. There was this guy here on YT who restored a decommissioned gun(cut to pieces with a torch), the welds wound up showing in the end after case hardening.
