Very nice and thorough review Mr. Martin... Have you reviewed the Klein cl200 clamp meter ? I would very much like to see your opinions on it's features and functionality. Your reviews are most respectable and appreciated by us all. Thanks !

Thanks for the thorough review of this clamp meter. Did you get it already calibrated? RS offers a calibrated version at a higher price. Is it worth getting it calibrated just for home hobby use?

Martin, I think it is worth pointing out that this is really an ELECTRICIAN'S meter, and not an ELECTRONICS one. So the fact that it doesn't do fantastic precision or larger capacitances is no matter. In fact, the capacitance function is really aimed at testing motor start capacitors, I'd suggest.
In an electrician's hands, he will be wearing BLOODY GREAT GLOVES for high power measurements, so that joystick makes perfect sense to me.
One other question - do they do them in bright colours? :)

This Power Clamp can measure musical output power of an Audio Amplifier?

One thing I think RS should include are some slip on crocodile clips for the probes. When measuring power it might be problematic holding the meter and connecting the probes simultaneously. Have fun in Boulder, I go to the other Boulder ( Western Australia) everyday for work and I can assure you not nearly as picturesque as the US version.

I basically have the same meter except mine will measure temperature up to 1832 degrees and it also measures micro amps
The main difference is that mine is red with yellow clamps and says Amprobe ACD-51nav ;)
Had I known that I could have got my same meter in that kick butt green I would have.

What's with all of the clamp meters? Is this an electricians site now?

  • @brickboiler

These are also available in the US as the Amprobe Navigator, Is that correct?

brickboiler Yes sir AMPROBE 54NAV CLAMP METER . It’s also rebranded by APPA, and SEAWARD.

That's the same meter as the Amprobe Navigator 52 series. Battery life sucks because of the back light. 9v $$$$

The LCD display seems counter-intuitive. All the annunciators are on and the selected one is blinking. Most meters they are all off and only the selected one is on. Perhaps this is due to the mini-joystick on this meter (also odd). Maybe they need to keep the annunciators on for the user to see what to select next since there are no dedicated buttons.

Power AC DC - this thing can play "back in black"?

Adil don't think there is a meter that does that. That's just something you would need to work out yourself

nice but over priced, for that money I want a good all in one solution.
with the resistance & cap limits it should be selling in the $60 - $80, manufacturing cost is probably in the $25-$40 range might be less depending on country of manufacture, even fluke(China) meters are way over priced when compared to the quality & manufacturing cost of the old Fluke USA meters.

Martin is big on solar power, so he has a use for clamp meters. Not only that, but they're not solely for the use of electricians.
What's with all of the complaining? Is this Youtu- oh, right..
