Dear Evan Hansen opened in 2016 to rave reviews and won 6 Tony Awards in 2017 including Best Musical, as well as taking home the 2018 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. A letter that was never meant to be seen, a lie that was never meant to be told, a life he never dreamed he could have.

In the book/novel of Dear Evan Hansen, while Zoe is doing the scene right before Requiem, Connor is kind of reflecting on how is family is acting and speaking about him now that he’s gone. I always wonder why they decided not to put that it the play, especially since it shows so much about Connor and how he does care about Zoey. I believe one of the lines in the novel was something along the lines of, “She doesn’t think I’d actually kill her, right?” After Zoe says “Just because Connor isn’t....saying that he’s going to kill me for no reason...” and in reading that line it felt so powerful that Connor really did have a small portion of care for his family and their well being. Anyone have thoughts?
I think things like that might not have been in the play because either it didn't fit the time or because Connor in the play is supposed to be more of a blank canvas kind of character. It also seems like it fits better in the novel and I'm glad these moments were included because it's given Connor more character...but those are just my thoughts
Chara 5896 I agree. I think we’re supposed to know virtually nothing about Connor, just as Evan does. I think it would have been a great moment to add to the play though, but I see why they didn’t
I think it was genius that they didn't include the scene because it's just the reality we have when somebody does commit suicide. We can never truly know what Connor thought regarding his family because that died with him. The only thing we can base any of his thoughts off on are what other people thought of him. I think that's the genius of Connor's character. We can't ever know him because that's what his decisions led us to.
I want to read that old script of Jared releasing Evan's letter as payback, it sounds so interesting and I want to know how it played out then

My favorite part of only us is the raw humanity behind it. I’d consider it the most human song in the show.
Navy Gaming I would argue both "Words Fail" and "So Big/So Small" would top it, though I prefer "Words Fail". Between Evan confronting first his lie, then confronting how he sees himself and basically admitting that he hates himself, hates the parts of himself that he hides from everybody else. It's a big emotional moment that works because so many people have gone through a similar personal reckoning in their own life.
msnmpn 7 I agree now, for that was a while back, but at the time I was seeing it as a true high point. The language used in the song is very true to now, so it feels very positive and real

At 6:21, I can relate to that. Someone I used to be friends with committed suicide by a drug overdose. It was actually this past school year. A few months before our high school graduation. And, everyone in our school said that they had a connection to him and everything.

Dear Sophia Smith he’s not evil. He’s the only character with the saddest arc, because he just coped with his sons death. If you watch the show, if you pay attention, he’s not evil, he’s just an older man. The only one who’s close to evil is Evan. Don’t get mad about the facts, but he ruins a lot because of his mouth. He’s a character you feel for because of his past, but that’s just to distract you. It’s the beauty of the show. If you look at the actions and the actions only, then the show is just annoying. If you look at the show and the characters and their mindset making you love the show

Laura Dreyfuss having uncontrollable laughter trying to sing Only Us to Taylor Tresnch is hilarious. It probably feels pretty weird to sing a song like that to a friend you goof off with. And to a very gay man. Haha. Poor Laura. But I enjoyed it. Laughter is a powerful tool of healing.

As important as the OBC's are for both Hamilton and DEH and other shows, the best shows can survive cast changes because the show is that good.

I feel it's still weird to see all the new singers/actors/what you call them, I've forgot - even though the show's story isn't stopped in any way by changing the people playing the roles. Like not seeing Mike Faist or Ben Platt.. it's different for some reason.
If I got the chance to see the musical, I wouldn't be as excited to see it if Ben and Mike still were there, but my god I would take that chance. But the closest I can get right now is waiting for the novel that's coming out around October this year? (Already preordered it, hehe).

You know, I came here looking for Ben, not some IMPOSTER! Nobody can be as good as him :(
Ben was great. I mean he was the original, and there is always something special about performers who originate characters. Like, nobody will ever be Elphaba and Glinda like Idina and Kristin were. But (and I'm saying this in a respectful and friendly tone), I feel like if you're gonna be a Broadway musical fan, you have to be ready to have a welcoming heart to new performers of a character, because it's a natural part of every successful show's life, and every actor deserves respect and appreciation for what they bring to the Broadway stage for us.
