The qeej takes this song to another level! I never realized how beautiful it sounds until listening to this song. The qeej always gave me morbid memories of funerals but in this song, it hits another chord inside of me. Loving this song! Thanks for all your creativity!
I think the Qeej sounds in this video isn't fully funeral like that's why. But it is more of a softer tone for sure.

Back in the old days alcohol was provided as it was the purest form of water they have since water wasn't as clean as it is today. The drinking we do today is just pure egotistic and unnecessary.

This is the first time I felt very emotional to a Hmong song in a very long time. Probably because I'm starting to see the instrument Qeej differently after my grandpa's funeral, but even so, I also never had a romantic relationship or anything, but when I keep listening and try to understand what it means, it really hits. Story is complicate and I'm no kav xwb but if I have to guess I say it seems they had a beautiful love. He loved her very much, play the bamboo flute for her n dream of a life growing old with her. Then she got married to someone else probably due to arrange marriage. She grew old and passed on. Her family came to ask him cuz he is the flute guy in the village to play the flute to send her to meet grandma and grandpa in the afterlife as tradition dictate. Though it was very hard and emotional for him cuz she was his sweetheart but he obliged and play his flute and showed her the way in the afterlife to her resting place. Then they come to a river where the living cannot cross he bid her farewell n return to the living. The pain of losing your loved one to someone else when you r young n then having to be the one called to her funeral to send her off when she passed is unimaginable. Nyob los tsis sib tau. I lost my late husband in 2017, this song really hit home and listening to this songs makes me understand how important the drum and qeej played an important role in our culture. Even though I have found love again, a part of me still misses my late husband when I listen to this kind of song 😞😞😞
I was raised Catholic and married a shaman family. There's certainly a difference in belief system but our culture and traditions are something so beautiful. I hope that we Hmong will continue to embrace our culture, traditions and beliefs and educate each new generation. This is a beautiful story...I cry every time I listen as I have lost both my mom and sister more recently. I know they've found their ways, which ever direction they were supposed to go.
