Only Three

  • In 2014, the only competitors going to the CrossFit Games are those who qualify at Regionals - no special invitations, no past-champ rule, no wild cards.
    In the Central East Region, that means only the top three go to the Games, and the region is arguably the toughest one for male athletes. Among the competitors are two past champs, several top-10 Games finishers, and a whole line of tough athletes hungry for a ticket to Carson, California.
    In this in-depth, emotional look at the men's competition at the Central East Regional, we follow the top athletes - Rich Froning, Scott Panchik, Graham Holmberg, Marcus Hendren, Nick Fory, Will Moorad, Nick Urankar, and Gerald Sasser - through seven events over three days.
    In the end, two veterans and one rookie will represent the Central East Region at the 2014 Reebok CrossFit Games.
    Video by Sevan Matossian, Hayley Parlen, Matt Krautstrunk and Gary Roberts.

    Crossfit might want to consider taking the top 3 from each region as they currently do, as well as the 3 top scorers who did not place out of everyone in every region. That would incentivize better performances across the board as all competitors would finish stronger, making the regionals even more competitive than they currently are. And 3 additional competitors being added to the mix at the Games wouldn't over-complicate things. I guarantee one or some of those 3 people would place higher than some of the regional winners.

    The title of this video is so perfectly chosen, it got me goosebumps in the end. The first meaning is obvious, those who finish top 3 at regionals go to Carson. The second meaning is the special condition in the last event, when Holmberg needed to finish 4 places ahead of Moorad but managed to finish "only three" ahead of him. The way this documentary presented the climax was so unbelievaby awesome, with the music and the slow-mo shot. What a great regional event packed into in a beautiful piece of work!!!

    I think crossfit is only doing a disservice to the games by the current top 3 rule. Over and over they say that the games are about testing/finding the fittest on earth and clearly all of the fittest are not there. It shouldn't matter where you live, if you are fit enough compared to everyone else in the entire pool then you should go to Carson. Most athletes would dominate weaker regions but what are they supposed to do? Move? I, as a crossfitter and games spectator, find myself unsatisfied that are people who are left out of the games who are clearly more fit than other who "qualified". I find this very hypocritical of crossfit.

    Top 3 in each region is kind of lame IMO. There are guys/girls every year who come in 5th, 6th and even 7th place in their perspective region who would take 1st or 2nd in other regions. The CF games should represent the BEST athletes going against each other...not the athletes who are the best because they live in a certain part of the country/world. Lame when you break it down like that. Been to the games 2 years in a row now and inevitably there are athletes every year who are waaaaay down at the bottom not competing at all but who placed well in their region. Meanwhile...guys who would have competed harder are sitting at home watching. I'm all for Regionals, etc but in the end you should be ranked against all times, all regions...period. Those who are ranked at the top in the end...get to go to the Games. Better for the fans.

    Such a stacked region. I wish they had one more spot open. If anyone from the Men's top 8 went to any other region they would have a good shot at qualifying. Some regions are no where near as stacked. Just from listening to the commentators they talk about Central East differently. These men have the hardest fight from Day 1.

    Gonna completely agree with Nick Fory on taking more than 3. U can't help where u live, unless u are a big name like Dan Bailey and crossfit hq guarantees u a job in another region. I'm not gonna say that hq moved Dan there because he's a top tier athlete and it is a huge pr boost for crossfit to have him compete in the games. But looking at this from a marketing standpoint, by leaving Dan in the central east regional, hq had to look at that and say, in light of the top three people rule, they were already gonna lose potentially 2 big names. They couldn't afford to lose 3 top athletes from competing in the games and please all the fans. Great marketing ode By moving Dan to socal. It didn't guarantee a big name in the games, but it made the likelihood a lot better by taking one of the top guys out of the central east. That's my thoughts on it.

    • @pflo7795
      @pflo7795 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep. I think the open is pretty much the best way to go.

    • @Moysauce22
      @Moysauce22 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I totally understand Fory's reasoning and comparing stats and times and levels of competition between regions, but that's all part of it. Yeah the Central East is loaded with phenomenal athletes who could win other regions, but compare it to the olympics. There are so many amazing weightlifters in China and Russia who are nowhere near good enough for their country's team but could shit all over a bunch of American weightlifters. They can't help their nationality, they just have to prove themselves amongst their competition. I do have to side with Graham though. If a previous games champion/multiple games competitor needs to continuously prove himself as a top three contender, then everyone else needs to as well. If they haven't proven themselves yet, then they haven't really earned their spot in the games. If you want to go, prove you belong.

    • @pflo7795
      @pflo7795 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True, but lik e Nick said, he placed 6th last year and that was good enough to dominate some of the other regions. So by saying" fittest in the world", I dont think that's completely accurate.

    • @TonyCox1351
      @TonyCox1351 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Paul Floyd based on your own comment you are incorrect. Rich froning beat Nick Fory and everyone in central east and then went on to be crowned fittest in the world, so how would letting Nick go to the Games get him any closer to being "fittest on earth"?

    • @pflo7795
      @pflo7795 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The pint I was making is that if the games competition is made up completely of people who are the fittest on earth, and Nick Fory was obviously more fit than guys in other regions competing for the title fittest on earth, then technically all the fittest aren't in Carson. Regardless of who wins,. Does that make sense?

    39.22! "The feeling of carrion, with buzzards swarming." So true. Not acknowledged enough in the CrossFit world! People often think their helping you by telling you to pick that bar back up, but many misunderstand when that type of "encouragement" or behavior is appropriate or not. Great to see some of the top athletes acknowledging this strange cultural behavior in CrossFit and that sometimes even though it's meant to be a motivator, people understand that it can often not be a motivator.

    I can see this from both perspectives.
    People are saying removing regionals & take the top "x" from the open. This has two problems. First and foremost it would be the worst PR move CrossFit could plausibly make. Having regions ensures that there are 3 people from your general area that you as a spectator can cheer on. Second, if you remove regionals & go strictly off of the open, who's to say people aren't cheating? I know it's not the "CrossFit" thing to do, but I'm sure it happens. Like another comment said, it's about finding a happy medium.
    With that being said, I think having a wildcard system would be beneficial for CrossFit. It would allow those people who did perform extremely well in packed regions a chance. Almost every guy in that last heat got to the rower in CE (they might all have, I didn't count but it was a butt load). Whereas in some regions, only one or two of the guys did. Some of those people that just missed the top 3 spots are big name performers. Thus it would be a good PR move on CrossFit's part as people like Graham, Lindsey, Marcus, & Sam have huge followings.

    For all Crossfit's talk about measurement and quantitative goals, it's a mystery why they didn't come up with a viable Wild Card program. Rank everyone from regionals and take the Top "x" number of athletes that didn't qualify. It's totally fair and not new to sports. Saves athletes moving around to game the current system. (PS I'm not watching an hour of spin.)

    I do think the entry requirements is a little unfair; there are guys in this region that would be top of most other regions and they are languishing in 7th or 8th, that said, a huge amount of respect for those guys who shrug and say 'let's get on with it'. I would suggest a #1 #2 #3 standard across the regionals and those guys that achieve those standards would be in. If that means some regions are not represented and some are over represented then so be it, at least you'd have the best in the West in the competition.

  • @SanguineJehovah

    Take 2 from each region. Have regionals split into only two weekends. Have everyone in each respective weekend perform at the same time. Take however many wildcards necessary (to equal total from this year) based on performances from a given weekend.
    Games will be better and more competitive and the amount of training time qualifying athletes get before the games and after regionals will be much more equal.
