Thor got fat because he got lazy, falling into an extreme funk when he failed at doing the one thing he swore to do (in time). Captain Marvel, Rocket, literally _everyone else_ involved kept busy over the years because there were still things to do, while Thor took the backseat, this video driving parts home.
As much as he grew over the Avengers and his ‘solo’ films, Thor still held onto pride, and at a critical moment paused to gloat. As much as he went through, even if he followed through as soon as he could, he _failed_ , so of course he would call it quits.
Over the course of Endgame he recovers a bit of who he was and gets a kick in the pants or two, and is even one of the first three to go at Thanos again, but letting himself go to the extent he did isn’t going to be resolved “just like that.”

Everyone reacts differently to losses, besides none of the other Avengers had the weight on their shoulders that they were the ones in Infinity war that had a REAL REAL chance to kill Thanos and prevent the snapped from happening, that weight it was only on Thor's shoulders he has a HUGE felling of guilt... Thor has a sensitive side, but he has been a warrior for thousands of years who to some extent sought to manage and keep his emotions controlled, but what happen with Thor is that as he was losing more and more for each loved one who he would lost, they would be pains that he would accumulate in his heart (compress pain) until he could no longer go on and he would let himself go, as we saw in Endgame, in Infinity War he lost everything, and was so blinded by rage and grieve, because after losing his father and Asgard (his homeworld) but having at least saved his people from extinction, without giving him a break after his battle with Hela, Thanos arrives on board of his ship and killed half of his people, he could not even protect them from Thanos (he tried but Thanos was stronger than him) he killed his best friend and to finish off he killed the last member of his family that was still alive, his brother Loki, and Thanos killed him in such a cruel and painful way and threw Loki's dead body at Thor's feet, as if he was a garbage bag, and they had Thor all immobilized that he could not even try to stop him, nor could he even say goodbye to his brother because he was gagged. All this rage against Thanos for everything that took him away in such a cruel way, because Thanos was cruel, he tortured him, killed half of his people even knowing that when he snapped his fingers he would eliminate the other half of the remaining Asgardians, he killed his best friend badly, but Loki's death was horrible and on top of it while strangling Loki Thanos turned his head to see Thor with a cynical smile (Thanos) on his face. All that pain blinded him, Thor was not thinking clearly did not measure consequences, was blinded with anger and profound pain and this cost the disappearance of half of the UNIVERSE for not aiming at the head, Thor lost EVERYTHING and feels that He made everyone lose a lot (half of the universe) he feels responsible, the last beacon of light and hope was to find Thanos and reverse the snapped so that those who left by thanos's snap, would return, but seeing that Thanos destroyed the gems and that there was no way of reversing it, Thor let himself go, he couldn't take it anymore, he eats like crazy, drinks alcohol all the time, because he can't live with himself, he doesn't want to think about everything he lost, and about everything that was lost because of him, because he didn't aim at the head, he was the only one in Infinity war that had a real chance to Kill Thanos to stopped him from snapped his fingers and he failed, the pain and guilt do not let him live ...
But of the 14.000.605 of alternate future endings that Strange saw, only in ONE they were going to win, if it had not been Thor it would have been another that would have made a mistake, it's not his fault, he lost his father, his hammer, he learned he had a half-sister, who is like death personafied that tried to kill him, lost his eye fighting with her as he sought to make time for his people to escape alive, he learned about the true story of Asgard and his father's cruel and horrible past, lost his homeworld Asgard his planet (It had to be destroy it there was no other way, to fullfil the prophecy and destroy Hela in order to stop her.. She was wayy to powerful ) lost half of his people before the snap, because Thanos killed them on the ship, lost his best friend and his brother who was the last member of his family that was alive, all this in the span of 1 week, OF COURSE the man was not thinking clearly he wasn't mentally nor emotionally balanced, it is difficult to think clearly after ALL that !! Of course, the only thing that was moving him was REVENGE before he let himself fall apart. What was keeping him focus on his goal (kill Thanos) was his desire for revenge, avenge his people, avenge his best friend and avenge his brother Loki ... How did Quill react when he find out Gamora was dead? like crazy, spoiled everything just when they had almost taken Thanos's gauntlet, Dr. Strange was there at that moment and he didn't open his mouth nor he try to stop Quill, why? because Dr. Strange already knew everything that was going to happen and that they needed to lose in order to win 5 years later, there was no other way ...
Yes I will definitely prefered if they hadn't make him as a comic relief, but if it was only for this movie then I can accept that, because I knew they were gonna portray him having some ptsd before Endgame came out, it was logical, and he definitely had a huge pain and burden on his shoulders, if that was his way of cope and masquerade his pain, well what can I say! many people cope with his pain the same way and they don't have half the feeling of guilt Thor had in Endgame, I mean losing half of the universe because of you that's a HUGE burden..

His dignity. His confidence. His self-respect. After all of his loss, his grief, his suffering, Thor lost the will to carry on. He stopped believing in himself.

Yeah, we can see it clearly. He's no longer the Thor back in the first movie. Everything's changed. In Endgame, his guilt took half of himself.

And honestly I was happy to see that side of him. I was heartbroken for the character, but it was a relief to see his grief handled in such a realistic way. His character arc was perfect throughout his pieces and I love Thor as a character and Hemsworth as the one playing him more than life. Such a phenomenonal portrayal and direction of character :)

she is not a Mary Sue. he trained to control her powers. Mary sues are characters who get their powers and benefits for free and save the day
His mother Frigga was killed by a dark elf, his father Odin died in front of his eyes, Thanos killed his best friend Heimdall, along with his brother Loki and his people, but most importantly he lost his dignity and belief. He's not a leader or a king he's no more than a worthy warrior who lost everyone and everthing but yet he still chose to fight.
This is why Thor has to be the one to kill thanos, he’s lost everything and everyone but continues to fight. No other hero in the MCU has changed more as a character over the past Decade than Thor. To complete his arc he needs to kill thanos and then sacrifice himself to save his fellow asgardians

Right since avengers 2 Thor doesn’t seem to have gotten any break . It was constant moving from one battle to another and losing a lot in the process. Yet Thor endures it and has clarity on what needs to be done. That gives his character a lot of depth from the rest of the
wow ... ragnarok and infinity war really made Thor a lot more attractive. I mean I liked him before, but before that he was more of a badass, and somewhat awkward warrior. Now he's .... so damn human. I mean he's still a 1500 year old, worthy and damn powerfull god but ... the issues he deals with over the course of his movies (not just now, but also with the first thor) are all so human it makes him weirdly relateable for a god.

Thor’s character arc was, not only one of the longest in the making, but in my humble opinion, one of the best as well. The only MCU characters who grow and develop as much as him would be Tony Stark, Captain America, and Loki.

Yes! I thought I was the only one who noticed this....this screen with Rocket was I think one of the heart breaking moments in the movie among many others. When Thor said "What more have I to lose?" it just summed up every emotion and made me realise that Thor behind the smiles is broken, really broken and now I'm sad. :(

😭😭Thor and Loki are slowly becoming my favorites along side Spider-Man.
No wonder why Thor is by far the best character by the side of the heroes in Infinity War. He's the only character on the MCU who went through real consequences in all (or almost if we put the shitty Age of Ultron aside, where Hawkeye is the only one to get interestingly developped anyway) of his movies along with Captain America. But what make Thor's journey more emotional and interesting than Captain's is that he's the MCU hero who has evolved the most. He went from the arrogant, ruthless and selfish heir of the Asgardian throne who had everything to a complete and invested good man who lost everything in that process. The tragedy of Thor is that to became a true hero, he had to lose all that mattered to him. The logical ending for him would be sacrifice, because being alive is all that is left to him. And then, he will become the eternal god of heroes, in a shining constellation among his peers and family ...

Loki is my favorite hes the most emotionally broken then Thor is.
While I can't imagine wanting to live after losing so much, I'm sure Thor would have felt it important to continue living for his people, especially after they've been displaced from their home planet with only a small fraction of the population left. Asgardians grow stronger with age, so hopefully his journey doesn't end just when he's finally become such a great character, so we can continue to see him reach his full potential.

I don't think a lot of people realise exactly what characters like Thor have gone through, because its always overshadowed by humour and action. But then you come along with a video like this at it hits home exactly all that his characters has endured. Incredible video
People make light of his hardships just because he is a god. But it is exactly because he is a god that magnifies all the sufferings!
Two lines sum up the heartwrenching trials Thor went through and riddled him with guilt and agony:

Rocket's survival was foreshadowed earlier in the movie, when Thor asks if Rocket (rabbit) is the Captain, to which Rocket sarcastically says he is to spite Quill, "foreshadowing" the ending when all of the Guardians disintegrate except him, ironically making him the Captain, and when he and Thor are discussing loss, Thor says something to the effect of having nothing left to lose, and Rocket mumbles (twice),- "I've got some things to lose." Losing all of his friends, his family, including Groot.

the saddest part is that thor became his prime self when he lost everything and he thought there was nothing else he could lose. then endgame comes and shows he has failed and lost even more than he could ever imagine. when he chopped thanos’s head off, it truly hit him. he stood there speechless realizing he lost no matter how it ended.
Thank you. So many people complaining about him being fat and all that when they don't even see what he has been through. On top of losing everything, he felt guilt and after just "going for the head", it didn't matter cuz he still lost.

THIS Thor is compelling to me. Not the Thor that would totally give up and make dumb drunk jokes all the time. I liked Endgame, but I just can't accept how they've diminished Thor to a laughingstock just because he's depressed.

Well, I don't think there'd be an interesting battle with that Thor considering said Thor went **Overpowers the whole Infinity Gauntlet**. He would have practically oneshot everything.
Not saying it was perfect, but it does make sense considering that, with how much Thor consistently loses things compared to the rest of the cast, and the fact that he got stronger than the _Infinity Gauntlet_ of all things and *still* couldn't do it, it probably weighs on him more than anyone else. Keep in mind, the interval between Thor Ragnarak and Infinity War is like, a day canonically. This man Thor gets no breaks whatsoever and after everything, he's kind of alone. The Avengers don't really assemble, and aside from a few, everyone else was doing their own thing, and they did not even keep in proper contact with each other. All he had were the Asgardians, who weren't close enough or bold enough to even try, or consistently failed. To put it simply, there's only so many times someone can realistically keep failing before they give up completely.
After watching Endgame this sure hits me even more now
