For those making “overachieving Asian jokes,” Jonny Kim grew up poor and had a father who was overbearing in all the wrong ways. His father was shot to death by cops when his family called 911 for domestic assault-and the cops bungled the situation like they always do. Jonny grew up with zero self esteem, felt alienated by other kids at school, didn’t talk to anyone and had no dreams or aspirations on what to do with his life after high school. It wasn’t until he was 16 that he suddenly decided he wanted to try to become a navy seal after high school so he spent his final two years playing water polo and competing on the swim team (smart).
It took becoming a navy seal to completely reset his life and fix a lot of things inside him that were broken. And it was his experience as a navy seal that gave him the drive to get his college degree, graduate from Harvard medical school and become an astronaut.
What I’m trying to say is that life handed him a shitty hand of cards and he fought and earned every ounce of success and happiness in his life. It didn’t just come naturally and it certainly wasn’t magically given to him

    • @unitedstatesofamerica9948
      @unitedstatesofamerica9948 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Definitely. All that and more...Extraordinary what pure grit and setting goals and determination can get you.
Technically, he wasnt poor, he said he was middle class, probably lower middle class.
There was an article in 2011 that came out about him. His little brother said he was the most ambitious person he ever knew, that his mother was disappointed for years after he enlisted in the Navy(Probably proud now), and made his college professors proud to be Americans, his water polo coach cited how he always "led by example," motivating others, with such drive. Humble hard chargers can be blind to how great they are by constantly working to improve the world around them, others, and being unrelenting in their pursuit...

Even his fellow SEAL teammates and civilian colleagues feel the same way...
Kevin Lacz, fellow medic and sniper: "Jonny was an excellent medic." "He held it together like a good frogman should." "Basically a unicorn."
Andrew Paul(Assistant Commander of his sister platoon): Jonny Kim was THE CONSUMMATE PROFESSIONAL. VERY, VERY GOOD AT HIS JOB. In my mind was a detail oriented, committed tactician.
Jocko Willink: "...If you have any questions about Jonathan Kim and his UNLIMITED POTENTIAL, feel free to contact me..."
Professors: "Basically your MODEL STUDENT" "This kid makes me proud to be an American"
Boss at Mass General: "Not all that surprised. Of course NASA wanted him. Harvard wanted him. We wanted him. Everyone wanted him. Hes a remarkable young man, completely unafraid."
So...not only was he a SEAL and doctor, he stood out exceptionally even among his peers.
Jonny Kim: "I consider myself very average...its just that I can stick to a goal and never quit which makes up for disadvantages I lack, natural and otherwise."
      SEALs: ???
      Doctors: ???
      God: ???

By saving grace at 16, he somehow got it in his head that he wanted to by a navy seal and spent the next two years doing everything to prepare for BUDS
He said that becoming a Navy Seal was a complete RESET on his life and even his personality. That should be inspirational for all the young dudes who wanna go to buds and assume navy seals were all outgoing studs in high school. Jonny’s continued success probably has more to do with his transformative experience as a Navy Seal and less to do with his ethnicity

Way to humble to allow something like that. To him, he is average in his attempts relative to his peers, and he feels it will never be enough. He's too humble to write a book because he doesn't see himself as special, just an average guy. But then again, he may in an attempt to help other people who go through his experiences learn from him. His role in rescuing Ryan Job got skipped from American Sniper. That's what his Bronze Star was awarded for. He could have pushed for some exposure. Then again, you can't expect movies to ever show the actual truth.

I have a City of Heroes game character named Static Cat. It's bio reads as follows:
A native of Kona Hawaii, Stacy was offically the first catperson employed by NASA and worked as a team collaborator on systems integration for the Ares1-X Rocket. Unfortunately, due to her skin's micro-fur, close proximity to the launch created a permanent state of triboelectrification on her body surface. After several team meetings, staff concurred that the best solution was to fit her with a modulation suit that would temper and channel the electrical currents. Realizing her potential power, Stacy's ancient warrior spirit arose in her heart and a new hero was born. (This character is a fan dedication to Jonny Kim, astronaut. " May you be successful as part of the first team to Mars, Jonny! Our hearts and prayers go with you. You can do it!!!")

Here you have all these rich entitled people getting caught for "University Admissions Fraud," and then you got the "Stolen Valor" losers?!
And then there's Lt. Dr. Jonny Kim. Accomplishing 3 very difficult professions, in which most people will struggle to attain just one of these highly prestigious and honorable professions!
Any parent would be gloating if their child accomplishes just one of the three? Dr.Kim's mom must have a permanent proud smile, and rightfully so!

Also, I believe he has been assigned to the 2024 Moon mission. Hes been doing 3:30AM workouts designed for moonwalks and in a zoom meeting with HeroX for a crowdsourcing competition, someone let slip, 'We hope that one of these designs will be waiting for you when you go up to the Moon in a few years."

Be like: "Jonny Kim didn't want to do anything. He had no sense of direction. He didn't want to go to college. His father wanted him to go to medical school. He DEFIED him. His dad was ABUSIVE AF and Jonny joined the Navy SEAL Teams because he wanted to protect his family and others from his dad and other aggressors. And his father was killed in a police altercation after he pulled a gun on Jonny and his mom. That what you want? Want me to kill Dad? Jonny became a doctor because he wanted to do more to save a friend that was shot in the face. He had other close friends that were shot in the throat and jumped on a grenade. He went on SEAL operations like every 2 days, whereas in the 90's you'd be lucky to do one in like an entire 6-month deployment! Should I go shooting people in the head and then try to heal them so I can try to develop a passion for medicine? From then on, I guess I can put up a decent application for NASA. Thanks mom!"
