  • I'm starting another job with a large propane bottle, i use them for quite a few of my projects and having had a close shave many years ago thought i should pass on my safety tips to prevent anyone else pooping their pants.
    If you did feel like helping me fund a new MEGA WORKSHOP then my patreon is up and running but i'm afraid i'm not too active on there www.patreon.co...
    thank you so much to my current patrons, you rock!

    When taking the valve off put a breaker bar through one side of the holes around the bottom off the bottle. Itll stop the bottle from rolling around and make your life so much easier 👍🏼👌🏼

    5:50 In the 90s when i used these bottles as air tank for my DIY compressor, i used a flat bar of steel and a vice (pliers) on the bottom, so the bottle can't rotate. Then a large adjustable wrench like yours, with a 1.5 meter long metal pipe as an extension for unscrewing the tap. The reason those taps are so tight is that the threads are conical, so the deeper the tap is screwed in, the tighter it gets. As soon as the tap is unscrewed half a turn, it goes very easy.
    For degassing itself, i also used multiple flushs with water and soap, but after emptying the bottle, and screw back on the tap and left this for a week with closed tap, after opening the tap, you could hear a slightly brease of air/gas escape again, so yes, the gas gets it's way inside the steel itself, and this is also the reason that it is hard for getting away of the gas odor when using it as a air tank. Before drilling / cutting or welding on these gas bottles, i filled up the entire gas bottle with water, and connected a hose to the open tap, and the other end of the hose submersed in a bucket filled with water. Sort of air slot. Then i first welded the parts that i needed, and after welding, i drilled the holes and let the water run out. That way there is 0% chance of a explosion or pop.
    A few years later, i used the first bottle that i converted to a compressor tank, to a oil extractor (vacuum by refrigerator compressor) because that bottle had to many holes drilled and extra welds , that i used another gas bottle with less holes and welds as a compressor air tank as safety precaution, because each hole or weld, will weaking the steel on these gas bottles. i have a thirth very smaller gas bottle (12 litres) that is only flushed with water, and this bottle can be filled with compressed air through the original tap with a air quick connect , this small gas botle is more portable and ideal for pumping up car tires etc...

    Thanks mate. Couldn't undo the brass top, you showed it was a right hand thread. To hold the bottle I jacked the car up and lowered it onto the bottle, and used a bit of scaffolding on an adjustable. Job done!

    Older tanks will have a sludge-like precipitate still remaining in the bottle after rinsing with water. This sludge contains dissolved flammable compounds that are not water soluble. Use a strong degreasing solvent to remove them. If you haven't ignited sludge yet, it's because you are lucky, not safe.

    Good timing as usual buddy. I'm getting ready to cut open an old bottle of empty Nitrogen and use is as a crucible for a furnace that I am going to make out of an ancient stainless steel beer keg. I was just gonna give the black dude down the street $10 to cut it open for me and set up a video camera and watch from a distance, but I guess I'll just save my money and fill it up with water instead.

      Check out Brian Ottroge or GrunBlau not sure what his TH-cam channel is. He made a pretty cool furnace out of a beer keg. He's quite technical though. I just happened to have an old beer keg laying around. Not sure I am gonna follow his routine, but I am gonna build one eventually. I'll probably follow your method on the insulating and whatnot.

    Afternoon matey!, great vid ( same method i used to use....when i was more mobile!) It works a treat. This reminded me of a time, when one of my mates decided not to take any notice of anyone and depressure a beer keg!, the type lager/ pump beers come in, it had been sitting half full for years, outside and in the sun sometimes...it was starting to bulge a bit, he wanted to cut in half for a portable bbq, he just found the biggest screwdriver he had and just hit it as hard as he could with a lump hammer, right in the middle of the valve on the top!!, everyone got covered, even though i was covered in rancid lager, i was laughing my arse off, as he had the full force of it, in his mouth and up his nose!!. Keep up the good work. All the best.

    Great stuff Turbo. I have a small heavy refillable type camping bottle that I wanted to cut to make a pot for melting lead. I started a few times but chickened out. I am starting to learn from my many mistakes :-) It is great to watch someone who knows what they are doing... failing that I watch you you madman :-)

    • @turboconqueringmegaeagle9006
      @turboconqueringmegaeagle9006  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      vinniesdayoff how much lead are you trying to melt? Obviously I expect you are 10 times stronger than the average man but you are going to struggle pouring a gas bottle full of lead, small powder fire extinguishers are good for crucibles, you'd actually be able to lift it. The people that service our extinguishers at work give me all the old ones as they'd otherwise have to pay to dump them.

    • @vinniesdayoff3968
      @vinniesdayoff3968 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This gas bottle is about 4 inches across the bottom and about 7 inches high. It is the size of a big camping gas can. It seems to be good heavy metal though. It would be fairly small by the time the sloped shoulders were cut away. Good tip about the extinguishers, thank you.

    • @turboconqueringmegaeagle9006
      @turboconqueringmegaeagle9006  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but getting to the valve is harder because the collar/handle is normally welded on, what I normally do is cut it off with a reciprocating saw just so I can get clearance to use a big tool on the valve.
      Filling with water to make it safe will work just as well on butane as propane.

      @turboconqueringmegaeagle9006  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      2.5mm - 3/32" on these big bottles, the smaller bottles are thinner and the disposable bottles are down to around 1-1.5 mm

    Taking those valves off is a b*tch! I broke a wrench on one and then ran over it with my car, just kidding about the car. Thanks for the video.

  • @re-purpose1st213

    Hey mate, I also fill them with water. One extra thing I do is drill maybe 4 holes around the valve or anywhere I will discard. My logic is this way any residual gas has somewhere to escape, so far so good.

    you could ratchet strap the bottle to some pole or something unmovable, before taking so much effort to unscrew that bloody thing

      From what I can see, on the bottom of the bottle, insert Some kind of steel flat bar through one of the slots and out of the slot opposite, this SHOULD (won’t definitely work) but should stop the bottle from turning!
