    The finest synthesiser ever created: The DX7 IID

      Better than the Moog?

    • @longde
      @longde 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Lex Luthor you mean the Minimoog? The Dx7 is more versatile than the minimoog, it can create much more sounds. I can easily create a moog-sounding FAT bass or lead by connecting a dx7 with an external filter (i have this setup)

    • @carriersignal
      @carriersignal 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Moogs are great synths, but the DX7 is (or at least was) more versatile in terms of it's sound creation ability, but I'm sure you know that. Nothing wrong with Moog it just serves a different purpose.

    • @martinschranz660
      @martinschranz660 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No not natively. You can install the grey matter E! card which enables an arpeggiator, among other features.

    • @yallimsorry5983
      @yallimsorry5983 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@martinschranz660 also like, you can really easily run an arpeggiator from the computer. I love my DX7ii but i wouldn't ever call it the "greatest synth ever". Maybe it is for you, but to me it's a certain area or palette of sounds, analog synths serve some very different areas.

    Excellent demo of the Dx7 II. I have the module version, TX802. I need to load lots of my original patches from my DX7 Mk1 and use it as a sound module for recording with my DX7 Mk 1. By the way, you can create amazing analog pad and string patches with the DX7 Mk 1 without layering ( I have the SuperMAX board installed in my DX7 Mk I but I don't use it). I have a dedicated hardware effector Lexicon MX400, making my DX7 Mk 1 sound magic. Long Live DX7!!!

    I know, I used FM7 and even FM8 for a few years before I finally decided I would buy an old DX7. To me there's a huge difference between FM7 and DX7. I find that you can't really get that good old electric piano sound on the FM7. And I find hardware in general to be much more direct and inspirational than soft synths.

  • @bormisha
    @bormisha 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Man, this is so wonderful, I listened to it in a loop a couple of hours non-stop. I especially like the 2:35-3:10 fragment.

    • @roboticrealm
      @roboticrealm  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you! I'm really glad you liked it! About the fragment: it's just some basic chords really...
      The beginning of the video at 0:04 I play the chords for "The Final Countdown" and at 7:09 it's "You're the inspiration" otherwise just me improvising.

    The performance capability of the DX7IId offer much complex sounds than the DX7 first model. It sounds warmer, this synth is really awesome, so much versatile.. FM at his best.

    All the patches you show un this video are fantastics, DX7 it's , but the electric piano you play beetwen 7:08 and 7:56 it's the best one for me. So Peter Cetera!! Take me to my fifteen inmediatly in the first chord! You play very nice too. Congrats.

    • @roboticrealm
      @roboticrealm  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Yes, the DX7II is really good at strings and pads as a matter of fact. Why don't you get a DX7II again if you miss it? The're not that expensive I mean. I found mine on Ebay for about 300 Euro. And IMHO VSTs doesn't come close to a real DX7.

    • @gpallos9

    I can never get enough of the DX7 and D-50. If not even for the sound, than at least for the looks. I mean, why designers made desirable instruments back then, and today's designers seem to throw tings on front panels at random without any sense of taste?

  • @JaceCavacini
    @JaceCavacini 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Looks like it could use a cleaning... Some nice sounds, especially the synth strings. I’ve been playing with a TX802. It can stack eight programs. Unfortunately, despite all the DX sounds out on the internet. I can’t seem to find many sounds that aren’t generic FM sounds (most of them sound the same and there’s no complete collection that doesn’t include tons of duplication). I know FM synthesis is more diverse than what it sounds like, but... There also seem to be no 3rd-party performances for the TX802 (you have to include the actual voices for performances to be portable).

      @monsterjazzlicks 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      roboticrealm The PAD @ 4:40 is very interesting. I doubt very much I could get that out of a DX7(Mk1). Is rich. humming and fuzzy. And @ 8:10 is equally beautiful with a thick bottom end.
      Are these both DUAL LAYER mode please?

    • @roboticrealm
      @roboticrealm  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      monsterjazzlicks ALL the patches in this video are Dual layer patches. I explain it in the info/description of the video (under the video). Just read it. That's why you can't make these patches that I demonstrate in this video on a DX7 MK1.

    Awesome showcase of what a DX7mkII can do! I just grabbed the performance data (THANK YOU!) and noticed some cartridge banks in there... do these performance files require a particular cartridge to work? Or a RAM cartridge loaded with the included cartridge patches? Thanks again - can't wait to check these out! The pads are stunning!

    I recently bought a DX7IIFD. but it didn't come with any Cartridge (a ROM or RAM)?. So I bough a floppy disk with loads of sounds from an Ebayer from France.
    Unfortunately I've not been able to correctly load the sounds on to it to be able to hear them and therefore save them for Performance use.
    I love some of the patch sounds you have on this video as I'm in a new romantic 80's tribute band.
    I don't know what the SYSEX thing is mentioned below as I've only the floppy disk I bought.
    Any tips you can offer will be warmly received. I'm not sure, if the 64 sounds currently on the synth are the factory sounds or made by the former owner?

    DX7s are wonderful instrument. I got a SY35 a while ago - for about half the money you've got to pay for a DX7. The SY35 has digital and analog waveforms which you can combine (2 or 4 different sounds). You can use a joystick to move between those sounds (like Kawai's K1). The SY35 is absolutely underrated imho.

    • @roboticrealm
      @roboticrealm  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's quite similar to the SY22 is it not? Check out my video on that one if you haven't already.

    • @varixclub

      The SY35 seems to be the fancy version of the SY22 (16 bit instead of 12 bit).

    hello, i have a DX7IIFD
    yeah the sysex file would be great so that i can load these sounds.... is it easy to load them and how?

    • @roboticrealm
      @roboticrealm  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you give me your email adress I can send you the patch.
      To load them you need the program DX Manager from fm-alive. Just google it and you'll find it right away. It costs only $20 and is well worth the price if you want to be able to program your DX7 easily and load patches from the internet into your synth.
      Of course you need a midi interface and midi cables for your computer, but I asume you already have that.
      To get the patches to stay in your synth you press Edit and then 14 and turn memory protect to off on your synth.

      Thanks! Well, maybe the patches I found on the internet, which I've based my performance patches on, are newer than the ones people created for it during the 80's...I don't know...

      The first example and also the moogy type one sound brilliant !
      I have a DX7 Mk1 and DX21 I am learning. Would really love a chat some time if you were around (maybe on Skype) ?

      monsterjazzlicks The first performance patch was on on the instrument when I bought it and the moogy patch is Paul Mangrus patch that I've only doubled and and done som dual detune on. Mr Mangru is an excellent programmer when it comes to the DX7. Be sure to check out his stuff here on TH-cam.
      I don't think I could teach you much about the DX7. It's very hard to program and the only things I'm apparently good at, since people seem to like my video, is to layer two patches on top of each other and make it sound good. With a Mk1 DX7 or a DX21 you can't do that so I probably can't help you there...

      Ok man, cheers. I just wanted to chat about a couple of basic fundamental things which are common to all DX's and which are drastically holding me back from getting off the ground here.

    • @roboticrealm
      @roboticrealm  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      monsterjazzlicks One thing I've begun to notice however is that if you take a patch and first check which algorythm it uses, and look at the picture of that algorythm on the synth, the operators at the bottom row are the ones you should begin to edit if you want to change attack, decay, sustain and release. If this is what you want you try and go to these operators in edit mode and change the EG (envelope generator). Which parameter attack, sustain and so forth is, is hard to know, but if you change the values on R1, R2, R3 and so forth you will eventually find attack, sustain etc.

    Whoa! I'm really impressed.
    I never had my DX7 sound anything like at 06:19 or 07:09.
    Would you share a sysex file with those patches?

    Hi, I just picked one for $75, but it has lost its factory sounds, and has no cartridge. Any chance I could get a copy of your sysex?

    • @roboticrealm

      You can get the factory sounds on Dave Benson's DX7 Page. Just google it. You can also download great patches from Thiago Gomes here on youtube.

      I decided to put the performance patches on my website. So you can download the sysex files from there.

    Do you think it would be worth it to get rid of a DX7 mkI to get a II? I got a mkI because I was young and dumb and now I kick myself for not getting a mkII when they were the same price online haha.

    • @roboticrealm
      @roboticrealm  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I don't know. Perhaps. It all depends on what you're after and what you like. I have a DX7 mkI at work, and I borrowed it and brought it home at one time to compare the two. The mkI sounds a bit dirtier and "lo-fi" than the mkII. Some people think that the mkI therefore sounds better. To me it's much more important to be able to stack two sounds, which you can only do with a mkII. I also like to be able to use the unison mode, which I think is also only available with mkII. With mkI I think you really need effects to make it sound good. MkII can sound good without that, even though it too really shines if you put on effects.

      @@roboticrealm I did end up selling the mki and I got a mkii. Well worth it for the stereo outs, split/layering, and the enhanced midi. A small thing I never really saw people talk about is the ability for multiple LFO's, it seems like that's a big source of subtle change in the mkii.

    • @roboticrealm
      @roboticrealm  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, not really. Performance patches or dual patches, where you layer two patches on top of each other, like I've done in this video, is not possible with a DX7 MKI. However, the basic single patches is still playable on a MKI. This was the whole reason I bought myself a MKII DX7.

    Amazing sounds! Do you consider this a good choice for a first hard synth?

    • @roboticrealm
      @roboticrealm  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I'm not sure. It depends on what you're after. If you like the sounds from it then go for it. But if you want a synth with which you can program your own sounds, and really learn how to program a synth from the start, then it's not recommended as a first synth. FM synths are hard to program. I would more consider the Juno 60 or Juno 106 to be a great first synth. They sound very good and are easy to program. Again, it all depends on what you want.

    • @roboticrealm
      @roboticrealm  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      However, it has 16 voice polyphony which is really nice, and the keybed is excellent. The DX7 II always feels very nice and inspiring to play. The same goes for the JX-8P (compared to let's say my XP-50 from the mid -90s that is aweful in that regard). So I would consider the DX7 a musician's instrument more then say if you want to be able to program...

    • @ArturJanz
      @ArturJanz 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      roboticrealm oh! Thank you for the quick answer. I currently own a midi controller (Arturia Minilab mkII) but I’m thinking about a bigger keybed, and I really love the DX7 sounds ❤️

    • @roboticrealm
      @roboticrealm  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ArturJanz If you are to use the DX7 as a midi controller, one thing to think about is that it only sends midi velocity up to 100 instead of 127. Nowadays there are quite a few great sounds for the DX7 to find. It can be a chore to find them amongst all the thousands of sounds there is on the internet but, well I have a few, and you can find other great ones if you search through youtube.
