    This is the first Latin American Star Wars production, and it was really really cool, but it's sad when you know that it is inspired by the genocide of the Selk'nam people of Patagonia. (BTW, Punk Robot was a 2016 Oscar winner for "Bear Story", an amazing short too).

    As chilean, i can't avoid to drop some tears watching this short, because i inmediatly recognize the real history behind the plot. The genocide of Selk'nam people from Tierra Del Fuego, the last native speakers who were two sisters... if you google for Selk'nam photos, you will see how Koten, Tichina and the paintings are heavily inspired in their corporal paintings and ritual spirit costumes.
    It's nice to see how Star Wars can host so many stories from diferent cultures... great to see you guys reacting to the short!
    Greetings from Chile!

    I have been following you for quite some time now and wanted to comment on this episode. I am from Chile and I am a librarian, and among the things I have read, learned and like is history in general and in particular, the history of the pre-Columbian or native peoples of my country.
    The history is based on the native Selk'nam people and their genocide in 1888, by Europeans, to colonize the territory of southern Chile. The Selk'nam were a nomadic people, who inhabited the area of Patagonia, specifically in Tierra del Fuego, which means Land of Fire, living in large groups, in huts made of wood and skin of guanaco or sea lion, were great navigators, wore coats and hats made of guanaco skin, and fed both this animal, as well as sea lions, seabirds, mollusks, whales, cururos, etc.. Something special that the Selk'nam had, and that you will love, were the masks they used, which in this episode look as if they were part of their anatomy. But no, they used masks made from the wood of trees and painted their bodies red and white. The reason for those is that they had a ceremony called the Hain, which was a ceremony that was first created by women, they were a matriarchal society, where women to maintain the status quo and power, disguised themselves as spirits or gods to scare and control men, but then men learned the truth, and then they began to use this ritual, to have control over their population, reversing the roles. The Hain, as I said is a ceremony and an initiation rite for males between 14 and 18 years old. They are taken to a hut made of wood, where the chief of the tribe and a shaman, made them fight against the spirit and they had to defeat it in a combat. Once the spirit was defeated, it revealed its identity, and they were required never to tell this truth to the women, or they would be killed. Below I will leave an excerpt, so that you can learn about this, which for me is the craziest and coolest of their culture. Think that they lived in the southernmost part of the planet, at the end of the world, and they did this ceremony completely naked ! really very impressive.
    Unfortunately and as you probably already know, the Selknam were exterminated, in one of the biggest genocides occurred in the country. The reason, was the expansion of the state to expand its territory, once the country was created as a nation. For that reason they decided to call Europeans to occupy the south, since no Chilean dared to live in those areas because of the climate or because of the indigenous people, who defended their territory with great courage. Then, around 1888, the first Europeans arrived and due to conflicts with the Selknam, they decided to kill and hunt them, because for them they were savages or animals. The best known genocide was a Romanian engineer named Julius Popper, where the bastard took pictures with the bodies of the murdered Selk'nam, as if they were trophies. And finally, I must say that in this genocide, mainly men were murdered, children and women were kidnapped, and they were instructed in the European/Western culture and traditions of that time, you know respect for authority , Christian religion and belief in God, and the official language is Spanish. And because I believe that the stars of this short are two women, perhaps because they are inspired by the last two survivors of the Selk'nam genocide. That they would be, Angela Loij, who was considered the last survivor of native Selk'nam blood, and Lola Kiepja, considered the last survivor who had the Selk'nam lifestyle and customs, living in an indigenous community, with the language and native religion.
    I leave the link to some information and the extract for you to read.
    Hain extract.
    "The ceremony began with the preparation of the kloketen. These were separated from their families to be prepared for the ceremony. They were formed with their arms extended towards the sky one next to the other to be stripped of their clothing, bathed and later to be completely painted with red clay by the men. Then they were transferred to the ceremonial hut, where they were received with songs and shouts, which increased the fear of the young people before the ceremony. Once inside the hut, they were distributed around the fire and under the seven posts of the hut, and they were ordered to stare upwards. From the fire the spirits arose, singing, and the initiates little by little lowered their gaze before them. Thus the spirits began a game of pulling, which ended in a great fight with a kloketen. Thus, each one had to fight with a spirit to show his skill and strength, although the spirit was always the winner. After the fight, the kloketen was forced to unmask the spirit, thus finding himself with a man of flesh and blood, a process that was repeated with all the initiates. The purpose was to show that the spirits did not exist and were nothing more than disguised men, who, after being unmasked, began to laugh and mentioned that "This is how we, men, play!"3 During the following days they were instructed in the jobs and obligations that awaited him as an adult selknam, they performed various tests and were taught the use of weapons, shooting and hunting. They were told myths that explained the origins of the world and its society. The most important was the origin of the hain and how women had betrayed men in the past, with the intention of explaining the primitive creation of the celebration and justifying its current form.4 With this, the meaning of the celebration was finally revealed to them. secret of the hain, and once the stories were finished they were made to promise never to reveal what they experienced to the women, since it would be punishable by death."

    "Fun fact", the character design and part of the history were based on an old civilization that lived in Patagonia (between Chile and Argentina), called Selknam. After the colonization of South America during the 1800s, they were hunted and killed until their extinction. The last Selknam died around 1970.

  • @Anduril729
    @Anduril729 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    The ending is likely open to interpretation, but I totally think the two sisters died in the end.
    As they sink deep in the water the screen fades to white before they appear back on land, with the clouds clearing and sun shining. They can "see their family again" and two new stars appear next to their mother's.
    Turns an already tragic enough episode even darker. But as the last survivors of their race they were not going to be able to save it, so instead they died to free their planet from the Empire and redeem their people
