haha so true, when your clothes are ballin you skate so much better. it's crazy. also something that helps me a lot, is skating different spots and environments - even if it's just some flatground, for example with walls with graffiti pieces i like. it gets me psyched
I think the biggest tip that i found out when I used to skate was to skate with people that are better than you. When you hang out with people that are good you're more likely to try new things and progress faster
I agree 100% I rode with a lot of extremely good riders in my sport flowboarding (a lot like skating check it out on my channel) and it really pushed me to get to there level now I am at the top of my group of friends in terms of competitions
I love how you actually incorporate your (obviously very good) understanding of science into these 'skate tip' videos; you're the first I've seen do that. It really does make the the tips make sense and shows us why we (or the board) do the things we do and how we can fix them. Great video Chris, much love from England :)
when I was trying to learn how to Ollie I couldn't do it. I had really dirty and old grip tape because I got a second hand board, one day I went and bought a strip of grip tape and I put that on my board, the next day when I tried an Ollie, I got it first try. yes it was bad but I was so hyped so I practiced it all day and by the end of the day I could do a decent ollie
Noah Fletcher That's like when I first learned flip tricks. Turns out the board my friend gave me was waterlogged and warped. I got a new board and got Kickflips third try. *They were pretty ugly though.
I was terrible at skating for a pretty long time. I was comfortable forming tricks, but I could never land them. Completely changed my mindset and things just started clicking. Got new gear and the only thing I think about when I want to land a trick is how I'm going to catch it and roll away or getting those bolts under my feet. Got all the basics and now I just need the basic intermediate tricks. Hope that helps someone out there.
I was riding a hill and I got some speed wobbles so I tried to hop off. Btw inertia sucks. I bruised a few ribs, skinned my knees, and got a crazy road rash on my arm. I stopped skating so it could heal. This video was helpful after being in a ridiculous slump
More vids like this!!! Your educational videos are so good, helpful and uplifting. Just got back into skating after stopping for 5 YEARS and your vids help me out.
Chris you seem to be a very healthy guy, you're sharing really good vibes in your videos. I broke my ankle so stupidly while skating (nothing too serious but annoying enough) and this truly helps me to be positive about skateboarding
I think with double flips it also helps to channel some extra weight into your flipping foot/leg before you even pop, it kind of gives it a spring loaded effect and you can apply that same rule to every type of double flip along with torque.
omg I can totally relate to #3 when I'm like outside skating in my pj's or some soccer shorts I literally suck so I've tried out different things and when I go out to the skatepark looking good, I always skate good.
Omg soooo true! I was stuck on pop shuvits and yesterday I got a really sick diamond sweater and skated with my friends and learned them! That looking good thing is true. Also to learn tricks it also helps to play skate with your friends because than it puts you under pressure and makes you commit. So if you have trouble committing, then try that. (At least it works for me) and btw thanks Chris I'm gunna use some of these. (If you read this far you're awesome)
My kickflips go through many performance plateus. First I learn them, get them down for a bit, then I lose the consistency of them the I hope right back on the plateu. Seriously happens every 2 months.
That use to happen to me too. It pissed me off so bad. Now I just change foot positions when my kickflips start feeling weird or off, and then they feel fine
These be some genuinely useful tips - lol, I thought I was the only one nerdy enough to keep notes on tricks to try and/or how to go about doing them. One thing that helps me deal with the 'performance plateau' is to mix it up a bit when learning a new trick. We know the feeling: you're tired and trying and trying some new trick, and it's tempting to just keep trying that one trick until you make it. Don't. It's hard to overstate the importance of 'flow' in skateboarding, and by popping some easier tricks in between attempts at that new trick you motivate your brain for the harder stuff. Works for me, anyway.
Man I really love your videos. Your tips are really helpful and watching you skate really motivates to get better. Thanks heaps, can't wait to see your next video
These tips were pretty helpful. I definitely believe in the placebo effect! Whenever I am wearing my favorite pants, or even my favorite shoe lace belt it feels better than if I were to try and skate in jeans or something.
Dammit thank you Mr. Chann for those tips lately I've heen feeling like if I'm not progressing at all but this video restored my confidence!! I'm not giving up at all
Chriss chan is my most favorite skateboarder I look up to him I'm 11 I've bin skating for like 4 months and every time I wanna learn a trick I think I wanna be like Chriss chan and I push myself I hope Chriss sees this comment and if he does Chris's chan YOUR THE BEST SKATER I know never quit your a legend better than rodney Mullen and tony hawk combined i love your videos.
No. Mike Mo is the king and THE legend. I know your gonna say "oh that's your opinion blah blah blah I'm a gay kid blah blah blah" but no it's not my opinion. It is scientifically proven that Mike Mo is the best. Mike Mo is love, Mike Mo is life.
i never had my double kickflips (i worked on them for so long but no luck) but after watching this video, the second i tried it, i can land em almost all the time! THANKS CHRIS
I hurt my ankle and had to learn how to skate switch. The following 2 months I learned switch flips, switch heels, and switch FS flips. These are some good tips Chris you know your shit
Truth on the favorite gear thing and lighting. I always skate better in my gray Braille shirt for example. I just like the way it fits. It's not just you.
Aye Chris love watching your videos they always help me out because some How ican a always relate to what you say like every time I'm being discouraged I come to your channel for a laugh lol thanks for making your videos your awesome
ive been learning switch recently because i have a torn acl but i can still skate, just not as intense. so ive been practicing a lot of switch and now i have a decent amount of switch tricks i can do and trick i almost have. god i get so close to switch tre's.. i cant wait to bust through that performance plato
About how you explained the double flips, your saying the board requires less force to be flipped if you flick further from the axis of rotation. But since the distance from the board is greater, the force acted upon it, needs to be faster and acted on for a longer period of time (simple machine: lever). So yes, if you can flick your foot/ankle very quickly with little amount of torque you are correct, Chris. BUT a shorter distance from the point of rotation (axis) would require less speed, and distance to be shorter, meaning that the distance AND speed you put into the board's rotation is going to be multiplied IF you are able to output the necessary torque. So, i will be different from everyone, but almost everyone is able to flick the board's weight from closer to the axis. The only thing that you might correct me here, is that flicking from closer to the axis is that the board wants to shoot out from under you because there is more grip surface area that your shoe slides on. Lean forward to correct this. *And.... copy & paste into physics homework...*
+TackStash779 It actually takes more force to flip from closer to the axis. It would be like trying to push a door from the opposite side of where the door knob is.
christopherchann could you do a video about center of balance and how keeping that in mind when learning tricks can help your consistency? I mean I get the general idea but Im betting youve got alot of light you could shed! Theres a local here thats pretty consistent and I noticed that his stance is pretty wide on the majority of his tricks, so ive been trying to apply that to learnin fakie big heels and its got me 90% there, just a matter of time now..and watching all your trick challenges etc. It seems like youre pretty conscious of how its important to be centered and in control of the axis point×body position relationship...but there isnt a video out there as of yet(ive looked!) That covers this in detail, and at your skill level I think itd be hella well received and appreciated! Hope you consider it, you're a rad teacher and I always look forward to anything you gotta say...your "how to learn" video was sick! Please and thanks, Chris Chann forever!
I love that you used physics to explain the double flip. We need more physics-educated people in skateboarding, that shit is crucial in understanding what you're doing.
I've been skating for twelve years and I'm constantly having troubles relearning them after injuries. I moved on and learned other tricks like tre flips. Don't worry about certain tricks, just keep the rolling and try other stuff too
1:39 i started learning bs 360 a week ago...actually i'm doing it but 180 / 270 and pivot or slide(not consinstantly), but catching the pivot or slide is very hard..i tried to jump higher and rotate my shoulders more, but rarely i rotate it very fast and then it works..any tips? (sorry if i have english mistakes)..also i stayed 4 hours every day to learn it but i still need some tips..
i had the performance plateau for a trick i wanted to learn, i kept trying and trying for a month an today i finally landed it, btw it was a noseslide nollie flip out :)

Yo, no joke about the whole placebo effect, I started wearing this new hat and I really liked the way it looked and as I was skating I felt like my style improves and within 2 days I learned smith grinds, tailslides, kickflip frontboards, and switch boardslide to switch, along with front board shuv outs, I AM NOT MESSING AROUND, BEING DEAD HONEST

Hey chris chann i got request here i barley getting back to skating but when i first started i got stuck skating mango goofy but i do my ollies regular but cant skate regular where and how do i begin skating the right way
I probably have been going at backside 360 every now and again for about 6 months. I have two ways I can do it. I can either do like my regular backside 180's and try to turn more so I land maybe at best around 200 degrees and 270 or I can kinda just take my front foot off and just spin the crap out of it (which can land me 360 some of the time but definitely gets me more spin)and land one foot. Which way would you suggest I learn it? It's is my most wanted trick and im so stoked because it's one of the only hard tricks I will be able to learn as of now with my current trickset. One foot back 360 , or back 180 slowly get more rotation technique
Yo what about if you live in a rural area and have to travel to town to skate! I have to travel 40 mins to my boyfriends to skate and then I spend a week not skating and I miss it and then I get unconfident with it if I don't do it everyday on concrete :( help can someone give me advice Chris or anyone ??! Like I'm almost at the stage of learning tricks but I get so unconfident if I don't skate for a week
feel the same way with double flips. and the performance plateau with bs 360 like still havnt figured out. i was like that with nollie bs 360. my mate could always do it and i was always nollie back 180 and couldnt get 360 the board leave my feet or ide get off balance and fall. i now can do it better than my mate when i was like aw yer that will work for me and i tried it and poof nollie bs 360 no reverting no manual to get around just nollie of ground 360 on ground again my mate was annoyed with me it was great
At one point, Rodney Mullen says that he SWITCHED his stance from reg to goofy to see if he could learn new tricks that he couldnt do with a reg stance. Dude did it. What a monster.
I broke my hand a while back and had to learn how to wipe my butt switch. after 6 weeks I still couldn't get it... I'm a failure
Have you tried it nollie or fakie
+William Winship fakie wasn't an option because my dominant hand was broken. but I'll try it nollie next time.
Try the primo
Or Casper
+GabeSkatesEveryday that's actually a good idea. I haven't tried casper wiping yet. I'll practice right now.
Somebody make this guy pro already. He's got a great attitude and awesome skill set. Great advice Chris!
Seriously dude
Far from pro.... he doesn't even have a board sponsor
ThatOneGuy Bastian Salabanzi is pro and he doesn't have a board sponsor.
sk8rage1197 Bastian WAS sponsored by flip once. But I don't think they made him pro.
Jesse Treadway Who? Chris or Bastian? Please be more specific next time xD

Ya
That happened to me too. Except i taught a good friend in only a month, now he got a board and he's a lot better.
yea today i found a skater and we played games of skate and i committed to bonelesses, usually alone i would wussy foot it
100%
im so glad that someone is talking about physics with skating. such an underlooked way to improve skating.

Thanks for the progress pointer man. i didn't understand progress until watching this video. Thank you!

your explanation of the physics of double flips was so well-articulated you know your shit!
I'm a bodyboarder, and honestly your tips apply to that too, parts of them but the general idea is totally helpful. Thanks christ :)
I love that you used physics to explain the double flip. We need more physics-educated people in skateboarding, that shit is crucial in understanding what you're doing.
i was really bummed on skating for the preformence plateau and i fell more motivated thanks man
*feel oops, but i am falling alot
learned 5-0's now
Chris i get kickflip for 2 days, and after this, i cant do kickflip anymore, u can help me? Sory i dont speak english
Stfu
Jar Jar lmao fucked up but kinda funny.
I've been skating for twelve years and I'm constantly having troubles relearning them after injuries. I moved on and learned other tricks like tre flips. Don't worry about certain tricks, just keep the rolling and try other stuff too
Darude - Sandstorm
5:20 I know exactly what you mean. I wear my volcom shirt, my black levies, and a shoe lace belt. It makes me land nollie tres.
Absolutely loved this video. Thank you so much!
Lacorda shirt!! Reppin that Portland, Oregon Homie!! You know Jeff & Elliot??
i had the performance plateau for a trick i wanted to learn, i kept trying and trying for a month an today i finally landed it, btw it was a noseslide nollie flip out :)
You did such a nice job with this!

performance plateau with my kickflips destroyed me. for the last six years i kept hitting the plateau and got so mad, i gave up skating numerous times. i finally decided to suck it up once more, and spent the last 2 weeks busting my ass skating 2 hours a day, 5 days a week trying, and FINALLY landed my first (sketchy) kickflip. i'm still floating on air half a week later.
Thanks man this motivates me so much more 👊
I have that same pet peeve with the sun thing, It's very distracting for me, especially when your shadow looms over your board and your going to do a trick. The clothes thing was also something I discovered a while back too. Anytime I go anywhere to meet new people I wear my favorite clothes.
OMG HAHHAH he mentioned my tactic in learning switch.. I hurt my ankle too many times and i was like, "Hmm, only my right is getting a beating.. I know, I'll learn to skate switch!!" HAHAHAH but hey, it worked :D *best way to learn switch*
Number 3 is very spot on!
haha I went outside and aimed for the edge of the board for the double flip and landed clean first try thanks Chris :D
This gave me lots of motivation thank you!
Hey chris my names ben and I watched this video yesterday and I am learning pop shuv it's and from your tips I landed it 5 times in a row Thankyou so much
Great tips Chrischann
Good to hear I'm not the only one who had the problem with the shadow thing, most skaters told me it was weird😂😂😂
it's so true that u have to keep trying even tho u don't see any improvment cuz when i tried to learn how to kickflip i could never land it until like 3 hours straight of trying it. then i got it on lock.
tre flips.....strugle with them for years now;/ only landed it 3 times x)
Great video as always chris :)
Been skating 7 months and can’t heelflip moving? Am I making good progress?
duddde I so feel that enhanced confidence when my 'fit is en pointe. the function>form principal is kind of for me off bc of the power of that psychological effect. i'm vain af when it comes to myself, it's dumb but w/e.
back 3 felt the same for me its my favorite trick now im workin on back 3 kickflip doe
I went out and landed my first double flip after this tip ...... Thanks Chris 😊😊😊
I love skate talk! Keep it up man
the things you said about clothes is so true for literally anything you do, even in runescape;)
Can you do a setup video
Turn on english captions. Go to 8:04... Enjoy talking about gay porn! =))
Anyway... Good job. Really helped a lot! :D
@Spacemarker grab a fence or something it should be much easier to land with both feet and get used to landing it
Can you do a day in the life? That would be awesome! Don't no why I just like watching them
look good, feel good, skate good.
A lot of athletes in different sports apply the concept that's why you see weird accesories all the time
This helped me out a lot Thanks homie! 😁✌️👊🌟
Thanks helps a lot, especially the double flip one! :D
Chris, do you think you can give advice on skating style?
Yo what about if you live in a rural area and have to travel to town to skate! I have to travel 40 mins to my boyfriends to skate and then I spend a week not skating and I miss it and then I get unconfident with it if I don't do it everyday on concrete :( help can someone give me advice Chris or anyone ??!
Like I'm almost at the stage of learning tricks but I get so unconfident if I don't skate for a week
yo thanks and much love chris
You are so right XO thank you!!
