This ship could've been so much more. The actual design for this also featured a redesigned superstructure (similar to Oregon City and Fargo class cruisers) with stronger AA and 36 127mm dual purpose secondaries. (18 twin turrets, 8 on each side and one fore and aft of the superstructure.)
They still could add Kentucky as maybe a T10 special ship with a ludicrous amount of Massachusetts secondaries, but I don’t see that happening anytime soon. WG isn’t prone to listening to complaints about historical inaccuracies.
Waiting for this ship since announced. Gonna make those BB main gun hit missions so much easier. I'm glad she's not for steel or dublon only, i can get her free, since i dont want to spend on this game anymore.
I half expect the next big thing is Super-Island-Ships... Nickname SIS, they are huge mobile islands with thousands of guns, all of which has a few seconds of reload time, and an No-cooldown radar.
Take one look at Kaneda's battleship and the description of the SIS would fit in. Save for the latter two. Though I doubt the devs would stop at that point, considering the state it's in right now. Imma be throwing a fit if Superships from Warship gunners are added here.
SSN's took over BBs in terms of being named after states, quite rightfully in my opinion. If you think about it, SSN with big guns (Strategic nukes) and heavy armor (sea water) are actually the most fitting successors to the BBs anyway. They are not the lackluster phish that their predecessors were, they are actually expensive forces to be reckoned with. But they are still not honored enough to fight any armed target that could fight back, old habit dies hard it seems.
this will be a must have for those missions that require you to get X number of MB hits in a BB. this will get it done faster than anything else in the game right now.

Long range accuracy BBs like Slava, or close range brawler like Schlieffen brings diversity. Or Shima vs Daring etc brings diversity. A BB with cruiser DPM is just outright nasty.
this is basically des moines with a massive hull which can be used for tanking and brawling with crusiers, not to mention the free range on the guns if you know how to lead the catapult US shells
So my question is, doesn't this kinda make Yoshino/ Azuma obsolete? Sure it doesn't have the same alpha per salvo nor torps, but the amount of fires you can set in this thing and the reload can make up for that. Also the fact that it has an American battleship hull and aa, already way more survivability than the ijn supers

HMS furious started out with 2 18 in guns (one forward and one aft) had the forward replaced with a flight deck and then later they removed the remaining gun to fit more dekc space.
It's the dream! Des Moines guns sans squishiness. May have matches with 7 Illinois on each team quite a bit in the future. Love the Des Moines but island hugging can be an issue from time to time.
I like this ship I'll probably get it too. Got only Ohio and Siegfried from RB, was thinking about either Paolo Emilio or Vampire II, but DDs are usually my 3rd choise. As I had my shy personal record with Iowa for some time and loved that ship and playing Des Moines in CBs mostly, this is must for me.
As a dd main for the past two years i suggest you to get vampire II! I play mostly Kleber , Marceau, Daring , Smaland, Ragnar, Khaba, F Sherman, Kitakaze but mostly i love the Groningen! i belive the combo smoke+ hydro is the best for strong dds! vampire ii is a better Groningen she get amazing dpm a little less than smaland but she get the best fire starter chance of all dds on game!
So now we have to contend with cruisers with BB armor and health, cruisers with smoke, cruisers with agility, and all of them can sit and HE spam to their hearts content. Great. Cannot wait to bounce AP off this thing while it chunks me every 8 seconds for 6k of my health by pressing the skill button…
First saw this while using Albemarle the other day. Got it mixed up with another US bb, safe to say I had a surprised pikachu face when he roughly matched my reload.
Man those weird USN BBs they add recently... I guess next will be two North Carolinas welded together at T10. Of course with a flight deck across them and torp launchers in the radar mast. And it will outpace and outspot cruisers. Something like 35kts + speed boost on top cause gimmick mania. WG really lost it. Nobody asked for those complete bastardizations of ships but they throw them at us. Completely ignoring that there are still lots of real ships they havent implemented yet but many players would love to get.
Ahh yes, another meme ship by Wargaming reserved for the "L333T" players with every single line researched at least twice.....so by the time I will actually be able to buy this ship for research points...some time between now and the heat death of the Universe.....it will be nerfed into the ground or power-creeped by other, even better unreachable ships, while my own win ratio is blasted into the dirt, by those very same L33T players with access to the best ships in the game.....Thank You Wargaming. That first game was the normal Random game nowadays. The winner was decided by MM and it was essentially all over by the seven-minute mark. A full stomp. I miss the classic games that went the full time.
I imagine dealing high damage open water (or surviving in general) with this thing can be a nightmare since every time you fire you reset the detection countdown. So the ability to go dark between salvos is pretty much out the window.
Surely this ship is gonna be op, I mean rng is what gets BBs , salvo just goes nope, also the fact they tend to have low dpm, if my cruiser could sit in the open trading with BBs be ez, let alone with twice the hp pool and a repair now.
RNG gets them because it's the difference between a 60k salvo and 5k salvo. RNG in cruiser guns is the difference between 10k and 2k. I do think this ship will be strong but it won't have the DPM of a cruiser due to shite dispersion, and it won't have the damage potential of a BB due to low caliber guns. Just a sort off middle ground, so like most ships it can be played to both great success and horrible performance. Seems likely you will be playing HE spammer rotating between hiding behind islands and "tanking" from midrange, I have a strong feeling the AP will be nigh on useless except at close range broadsides given the BB dispersion formula and cruiser level damage payoff.
At range probably yeah, but at close range with American AP your health pool will let you 1v1 them, just don't brawl or your gonna get fished, The ship made the trade off to crush most BBs and DDs easier at cost of Cruiser capability, you just gotta play her like a GIANT ASS AMERICAN cruiser, you don't trade unless it is favorable.

After watching your first game, I thought the guns handle a lot like my Irian build. Its more of a torp/fire/concealment build. As an Irian player, who has often felt the pressure of trying to dodge every shot fired at me, having a little brawl might be nice.
As a history buff, this ship makes no sense whatsoever, BUT from a gamer point of view, this looks like it might just be my ideal battleship to farm in. Definitely up there with the Tsundere and Conqueror, at the very least. Well, if I were still playing WOWS, anyway.

Look up the battleship new jersey channel. He did a video about this when it was announced. The US navy had a spare Iowa class hull that was launched but not finished. Since carriers became the main power projector, this was given a good amount of thought to finish the ship like this. But it was determined to be to expensive and was scrapped.

at 17km+ ranges AP might be good choice, you can actually penetrate 50mm+ decks due to plunging fire and it has actually faster travel time. ofc how good its over a fire it's hard to answer.
I imagine this is WG's attempt to make Brawler-esc US BB's. Between the shorter range secondaries and the fire rate of the 302's... The section of BB line just screams midrange and cover fire, instead of sniper (MN line) or Midrange/Sniper (VT line). Honestly, i'd play it like a very large cruiser and keep the shorter range, in order for accuracy. The way you had the IL positioned at the beginning of the 2nd match was incredibly strong, and if the AP had actually smacked the Citadel of that cruiser, then the benefits would have been far outweighing trying to snipe in the thing. Also, if they did not change the mechanics of rams, then you retreating has the similar effect of running a ram flag.
Awesome work by the WG fucks! Now make a BB with smoke and Sherman guns! What this game really really needed is more HE spam. Hopefully they will put themselves out of business soon
you build for secondary range and take the skill that gives you main battery reload when targets are in secondary range. You cant be citadelled, use that, enhance the already good dpm. Play it like a des moines, dont even bother with most targets outside of 14km
I got her - I’m still trying to get the play style down. I’m a “go at them guns blazing until I can hit them with my sword, tactics be damned!” type of player Obviously - cruiser, dd, and aircraft carrier are not my strong suit
This is a foolproof dm. Kinda glad it's locked behind research bureau so at least only people who can *somewhat* aim can get it, although still pretty unfortunate how expensive research point grinds are. Potatoes driving this would be so painful to watch.
this thing having more dpm than buffalo is hilarious to me. buffalo just sort of sucks. illinois uses the battlecruiser dispersion formula like georgia does, so it's still accurate for a battleship. the accuracy parameters are identical to georgia actually.
I feel like they need to make RNG less of a thing for battleships since they have such an insanely long reload and they just keep adding all this stuff that punishes them and pushing. Nothing worse than cruisers sailing completely sideways to you like an idiot and your shells just flying all over the place and then having to wait 30 seconds.

This ship makes me sad. Illinois was a real thing. She was laid down and partially completed but canceled in 1945. Illinois was different than her sister ships, being an all welded design instead of riveted together like Iowa, New Jersey, Missouri and Wisconsin were. She would have been lighter and theoretically faster than the others. WG could have played off that, made Illinois kinda like a Georgia without overmatch. Maybe buff the secondaries a tad, since she was the newest of the class and whatever upgrades applied to the others would apply to her. Put a Georgia/Bourgogne speed boost on her, she could have played as a fast flanking BB.
At this point i'm just waiting on WG to take on that idea of german Battlecarriers i've seen floating around on the internet. which would basically be Battleship-Carriers instead the other way around. Instead of taking a BB and slapping a Flight Deck on it, it would be a CV with Battelship or Cruiser guns slapped on it.
the lack of accuracy for what are essentially desi guns is stunning. that trash accuracy really hurts the potential of this ship big time. i'd rather have a desi, atleast it can hit what it's shooting at. still for a t9 it looks pretty strong.
the Illinois was never supposed to have 203mm guns, she was going to be equipped with the 406mm or the 457mm guns IRL, but she was never made, same with the Kentucky, the 6th and final Iowa class BB
LIke don´t get me wrong, I understand taking more range in modern WoWs, but you still have Des Moines guns. I honestly would take faster turret rotaion in slot 3 and reload mod in slot 6. I think that fits the style of this ship more.
This ship is WG acknowledging their player base is so stupid by a long margin; that playing a cruiser means you can't go broadside is far too complex for the 43% wr army.
I know is sacrilege but I'm gonna reset a couple of lines to get this one - I don't care - I just want to have fun with the guns (it's always about the guns - either big ones or more of them )
That's that streamers ram, I have rams slower than that all the time and it will count for 100% of my health despite being in a larger BB with ram flag
Good vid, but this ship just doesn't appeal to me, at least right now. Maybe after I play against a few, I'll feel different. It just seems like the Des Moines is better, and if you want the extra range, run a spotter instead of radar, then you also have Hydro.
I am still pissed off at the misnaming of a ship i brought to the devs year ago. This project was never intended for the BB-65 Illinois hull but was specifically drawn up for the more complete BB-66 Kentucky hull. I was the one who drug this up from Naval Archives, brought it up to the devs with all of its documentation and they turn around and change the state name which has incredibly pissed me off as this was the only project that ever carried my home state's name.
Perhaps they will do Kentucky as a T10, and as planned by the Navy? All those spicy secondaries and the trimmed down superstructure. Could definitely see them add it in as a T10 steel ship, but with like 7.5 second base reload.
What a weird ass ship. I can't tell if I like the idea or not. I almost feel like this would make sense with a little bit better shell velocity, but it feels like you're just stealing a BB slot as is.

There were very real designs planning to arm an iowa hull with cruiser caliber guns, to serve as a "heavy AA ship".

you build for secondary range and take the skill that gives you main battery reload when targets are in secondary range. You cant be citadelled, use that, enhance the already good dpm. Play it like a des moines, dont even bother with most targets outside of 14km

This is a foolproof dm. Kinda glad it's locked behind research bureau so at least only people who can *somewhat* aim can get it, although still pretty unfortunate how expensive research point grinds are. Potatoes driving this would be so painful to watch.
this thing having more dpm than buffalo is hilarious to me. buffalo just sort of sucks.
illinois uses the battlecruiser dispersion formula like georgia does, so it's still accurate for a battleship. the accuracy parameters are identical to georgia actually.
I feel like they need to make RNG less of a thing for battleships since they have such an insanely long reload and they just keep adding all this stuff that punishes them and pushing. Nothing worse than cruisers sailing completely sideways to you like an idiot and your shells just flying all over the place and then having to wait 30 seconds.
Battleships should have much longer reloads and waaay better accuracy. Might take a while to shoot but if you can aim people would actually fear you.
Curious what mods you use, and how you move them around? I don't remember that icon on the bottom left being standard when aiming at a target.

This ship makes me sad. Illinois was a real thing. She was laid down and partially completed but canceled in 1945. Illinois was different than her sister ships, being an all welded design instead of riveted together like Iowa, New Jersey, Missouri and Wisconsin were. She would have been lighter and theoretically faster than the others.
WG could have played off that, made Illinois kinda like a Georgia without overmatch. Maybe buff the secondaries a tad, since she was the newest of the class and whatever upgrades applied to the others would apply to her. Put a Georgia/Bourgogne speed boost on her, she could have played as a fast flanking BB.
At this point i'm just waiting on WG to take on that idea of german Battlecarriers i've seen floating around on the internet. which would basically be Battleship-Carriers instead the other way around. Instead of taking a BB and slapping a Flight Deck on it, it would be a CV with Battelship or Cruiser guns slapped on it.
This would be absolutely game defining in a tier 7-9 game. You could bully everything.
the lack of accuracy for what are essentially desi guns is stunning. that trash accuracy really hurts the potential of this ship big time. i'd rather have a desi, atleast it can hit what it's shooting at. still for a t9 it looks pretty strong.
the lack of accuracy? he was hitting 8 out of 12 shells when he got a bit closer. thats like 60-70% accuracy per salvo. this thing is a monster.
I can see that thing being really good against cruisers and dd's. really any ship that wants to kite out bb's.

the Illinois was never supposed to have 203mm guns, she was going to be equipped with the 406mm or the 457mm guns IRL, but she was never made, same with the Kentucky, the 6th and final Iowa class BB
Post war there were conversion proposals for Kentucky and Illinois with 203mm guns or missiles even.

LIke don´t get me wrong, I understand taking more range in modern WoWs, but you still have Des Moines guns. I honestly would take faster turret rotaion in slot 3 and reload mod in slot 6. I think that fits the style of this ship more.
They really just need to buff the Yodos turn circle and deck armor.

That's that streamers ram, I have rams slower than that all the time and it will count for 100% of my health despite being in a larger BB with ram flag
Good vid, but this ship just doesn't appeal to me, at least right now. Maybe after I play against a few, I'll feel different. It just seems like the Des Moines is better, and if you want the extra range, run a spotter instead of radar, then you also have Hydro.

I am still pissed off at the misnaming of a ship i brought to the devs year ago.
This project was never intended for the BB-65 Illinois hull but was specifically drawn up for the more complete BB-66 Kentucky hull.
I was the one who drug this up from Naval Archives, brought it up to the devs with all of its documentation and they turn around and change the state name which has incredibly pissed me off as this was the only project that ever carried my home state's name.
Perhaps they will do Kentucky as a T10, and as planned by the Navy?
All those spicy secondaries and the trimmed down superstructure. Could definitely see them add it in as a T10 steel ship, but with like 7.5 second base reload.
What a weird ass ship. I can't tell if I like the idea or not. I almost feel like this would make sense with a little bit better shell velocity, but it feels like you're just stealing a BB slot as is.
what are your graphic settings? why does your game look so good? when I play On ultra it still looks like poop and looks all gray and washed out
