I've been retired for almost 35 years and I still have my version of the "green machine" survival kit. At 75 I have progressed to van living from backpacking after 63 years. Twice a year I go through my kit to ensure contents are okay and up-to-date. In my latest inspection I added an Aqua Quest 10X10 Safari tarp, a bright orange/silver survival blanket and several other current survival items weighing less than the original items. Even the backpack weighs much less than the original military pack. It's amazing how versatile the 55gl contractor bags are and saved my bacon in a mountain snowstorm. Great video!

Another great video. Analogous to an M16-A2: pure, practical, no nonsense, functional. Everything you demonstrate is doable in a survival situation. Thanks for avoiding the current tendency of others to build a castle and cook a gourmet meal.
Yeah the M-16/AR series is so great they had to install a fix it button. Don't see those on many other weapons.
@@tinsoldier5621 The original M-16 was touted as a self-cleaning. so these first weapons became fouled for the lack. The forward assist was added to help push the round into the chamber once the it becomes fouled. Also fully loaded mags had a habit of the primary round not seating properly. Like all new equipment the bugs need to be worked out. With proper maintenance and holding off from fully loading mags. It has become very dependable weapon.
I have always thought the same. In a true survival situation one does not often have the chance to eat a bacon wrapped tomahawk steak with baby potatoes and hollandaise sauce. I wish the feels of some on you tube would allow for foraging and harvesting of food while doing videos like this.
@@tinsoldier5621 I was very familiar with my issued 16 a2 . I never saw a “fix it button” on it. I suppose the trigger could be loosely considered a “ fix it mechanism” though. When it was pressed the problem was ,on occasion , “ fixed”.
@@hammerhound168 They changed the original powder too which fouled up easier. I read an official M16 documented report on the problems the US originally had. Incidentally our SAS used the M16 in Borneo c 1960's and because the British always clean their weapons regularly we never had that problem, it is drilled into us from basic. I like the M-16 and later variants. I would have loved to see the whole Stoner system developed and modernised, Stoner had some brilliant concepts. We loaded our 30 round mags with 28, and 20's with 18 for training

When you scrape fat wood to get tinder, always do it on a sheet of plastic so that you can keep the shredded fat wood there and not lose it on the stump or off onto the ground

Excellent block on instruction today Andrew! And, leading from the front too! Negotiating water obstacles via individual flotation is a highly under utilized skill, that should be taught. Understanding the principles of construction with materials on hand ( 6 P’s ). Nice and simple Bushcraft skills taught today too! I like the Kukri you’re using too, looks really well built and sharp. I like the cotton-ball and Vaseline fire starters… I used to think they we’re too simplistic, but over time have come to acknowledge the wisdom of its simplicity and multipurpose uses…you touched upon a very little taught skill on Land Nav… the use of time. While pace count is nice to know and use, knowing one’s pace via time is also an excellent gauge of distance traversed… set the timer or use the stop watch and move out to your point. The trick is knowing the movement times in various densities of undergrowth… but, that’s the same issue with the pace count…it pays to know other pacing on various terrains other than the simplistic 100 meter flat course that’s used in PLDC (WLC or whatever it’s called nowadays) to establish an initial pace count. How’d it go at that Survival School? Excellent content Andrew, well done! Keep up the Fire!

Andrew, your videos are great. You are obviously a man of action. In a desire to help you improve the quality of your videos, did you know that you can try to be as good as you can be, but it’s not standard to say that you do something “as best as you can.” You need to eliminate the second “as” when “good” changes to “best.” You can try to do something as best you can, do it the best you can, do it the best you possibly can, or simply do your best.
We crossed the Chagres river in Panama with poncho rafts in '82 during Jungle Warfare School. I won't say that the ruck was bone dry afterward but this is a very functional technique to cross a body of water. Great video, Sir.

As far as water crossing goes, I was taught the same way in the Corps, but for when I've done it on my own, I strip down to my silkies and pack my clothes inside the WP bag so once I get across I can dry off with a shemagh or micro fiber towel, get dressed and get on my way. Solid kit though, I have the same mat and I love it. I also have a thermarest foam type.

You are a better man than I. I would have believed you after one crossing, but two in that water, which must have been freezing was above and beyond. I use prescription drug bottles for fire kits. There are a myriad of sizes. Get one with a child proof lid, and you have a little more space in the top. Use gorilla tape around the seal, and it is waterproof, it will float, and you have a little extra tinder. You really need some instruction on how to blow a whistle properly (22:00 minute mark). Excellent video ! Very nice loadout. I love that quikrelease backpack. I used to have an alice pack that I secured to a pack frame and put dual quik release straps on it. I went off on many heavy duty adventures with it. Sometimes I mounted the pack and the straps to a bentwood pack board and improvised skids to the pack board to haul the pack in boreal conditions. It was a lot easier than carrying it. Some rope or paracord was tied to the packboard to pull it. The bentwood packboard was military surplus. My wife later threw away my beloved Alice pack after many years of adventure because she thought it looked ugly. I hate that but what can you say. I have numerous packs now but that Alice pack was one tough cookie ! I still have my old poncho from the Nam era. Very heavy compared to todays lightweight poncho and I have two of those ponchos. The old heavyweights were great because they snapped together with a second poncho to make a tent. I haven't even looked to see if my modern ones will do that, I haven't used them because I am still using the old one. Thanks for the video and your service to our country. From an old Marine ! We used to practice combat river crossing with full equipment and weapons using 2 trash bag's a poncho all kit goes inside the pack any holes covered both sides with black nasty ( Brit version of duct tape) boots and sock inside we always carried track shoes for night so boots have a chance to air and dry .
Pack in water SLR on top swim across behind pack get to other side move in shore as a squad all round defence every second man drys with a face cloth and gets dressed

I learned how to make that flotation unit when I went to Jungle school down in Panama at Ft. Sherman back in 85. It works. Ah yes, the 2 thing's we always saved from the MRE's, besides the matches of course, is the coffee and the creamer. The creamer works as a emergency fire booster as it burns !!! Make you wonder what that stuff is made of at times 🤣🤣🤣

Never forget your training... Remember your training and you will come back alive. Something we were told in training that has always stuck with me, but you have to want the knowledge and love the training for a lot of guy's that tend to lack in or forget what they were taught over the years. Great information, as always. I would suggest, if time and conditions allow, dry-packing boots as well. With spare dry socks, you are then able to hike comfortably, if needed. Thanks, again.
Hi Andrew I've always been taught to apply a tourniquet approx 5cm above the wound thinking being everything below the tourniquet is going to die and you'll lose it. Certainly try to keep any valuable joints. Apply a tourniquet to a thigh for a traumatic foot loss and you can lose the knee joint valuable for attaching a prosthetic leg to 👍
Tourniquets have to be on upper arm or leg as they both only have one bone. If you use them on lower limbs then they wont stop blood flow.
One thing I like to add for hygiene to my kits is little 30 ml bottles of dish soap. Clean yourself, cloth or utensils and it takes up very little space. I still need to build a little fishing and trapping kit like you have though.
Man, you have a winning combination. Great out door classroom for a background, Information rich and a perfectly timed delivery. Too fast, folks can not follow, too slow and some might get lost and drift off. There is a reason why this channel will continue to grow.
