Another mail day. This time we see how Upper Deck does on some redemptions and replacements. I also bust a spectacular pickup card. Strangely, I do talk a bit about card value for a change. Although, not entirely!

HOW FINAL GRADES ARE DETERMINED ACCORDING TO BECKETT:
[It’s convoluted!]
The overall numerical grade is not a simple average of the four report card grades. Beckett Grading Services uses an algorithm which determines the final grade using the 4 sub grades on the front label of the card holder. The lowest overall grade is the first category to observe because it is the most obvious defect, and the lowest grade is the most heavily weighted in determining the overall grade.
Example :
Centering = 9.5
Corners = 9.5
Edges = 9
Surface = 8
Final grade = 8.5
The reason that this card received an 8.5 is that even though the Surface grade was an 8 (the lowest grade overall), the 9.5 grades on Centering and Corners were strong enough to bring it up a full point to reach the 8.5 level.
Another example :
Centering = 9.5
Corners = 9.5
Edges = 8.5
Surface = 9
Final grade = 9
Upon first glance, it may appear that this card should've received a grade different than a 9. The most this card could receive was .5 (or one-half grade) above the lowest sub-grade. The Edges were the lowest in this case, hence, the card received the overall 9 grade. Even though Centering and Corners received grades of 9.5, a key point to remember is that the minimum requirement to receive a grade of Gem Mint is to have at least three grades of 9.5 and the fourth to be no less than a 9.
Also, please note that the final grade rarely, if ever, exceeds two levels above the lowest of the four characteristic grades. For example, if a card has characteristic grades of Centering 10, Corners 6, Edges 10 and Surface 10, the final grade will be a "7" (of which is exactly two grading levels above the lowest characteristic grade).

Honestly I've found that when dealing with the companies the best way is simply to be polite. I sent in an expired Panini rookie redemption, just one of the cheap 4 player team type cards. The estimated delivery window passed so I emailed them and they sent it right out and just as an extra tossed in a Carey Price Global Contenders auto /25
Well, I find Panini and Leaf always over-deliver on redemptions. UD is more about advocating on our own behalf, as corporate pounds into their heads to cling to internal policy (and the bottom line). As for politeness, as a Montrealer and New Yorker, I much prefer people who are honest, direct, and passionate than polite, passive aggressive, and backstabbing. Meaning: it's better to be good than nice. Where I come from, it's all about substance. Style is often just a form of classism.

Well I like that you got a nice goalie auto from UD. It's too bad about the Alexis Lafreniere card. The thing is I pulled one just like it only the bottom left corner wasn't quite as bad as yours. It still had a slight ding there so there was definitely something wrong in the manufacturing. That is a beautiful Crosby auto. It looks much better than his Future Watch cards to me. And I am one who is partial to SPA Future Watch cards. For me it's not about the value of the FW though. When it came out it combined my 2 major PC, rookie cards and autographs. So I like them just because it means I can get both on 1 card instead of 2 cards. I don't agree with Zeeree on some things but I definitely agree with him and you that prices for some players are way to high. Makar is a fantastic player but Hedman and Josi are fantastic D-men also that don't come with that high of a price tag. With the cost of everything now I've been kinda going away from UD. I've been picking up more Pannini and Topps rookies and adding to my older cards. I do pick up graded cards now and then but I don't care much about if they are a high grade or a low grade. I don't understand why a lot of collectors are disappointed with 8s or 7s. To me if it's a card you really want it shouldn't matter. I look at my Orr rookie with all the creases and tried edge and damaged corners and I'm just ecstatic that I have it. That's the way I feel about all my cards. Oh well I guess I've rambled on enough. Hey Sean. I abhor conspiracy, absent substantiation. I do see how that pads revenue. But, it would also undermine their credibility. The issue with monopolies/oligopolies is... they care more about branding than reputation.

Would be nice if panini could get back into the hockey market real cards and they almost always honor there old redemptions. Without competition upper deck doesn't have to try and harder. Less packs,less cards ,less hits and less quality control. #dryden

I also try to get piece of history of my favorite team Panthers. I mean like having atleast one card of every player ever played with the team and some odd ball cards that are not so easy to find but are not that expensive. Like some cereal cards from 90s or stuff like that. Atleast those are exremely hard to find in Finland. Sure I would love to have 1/1 Barkov or Huberdeau or Beezer but I don't want to put all my money on those and having collection of couple cards rather than having collection throughout the whole history on my Panthers. Not always about value but always about love to the hobby. #DRYDEN

yah losing any leafs off the tree is a pain to the beer mug glass. i had sold 2 hellabuck yG. and the lady said it didnt show up so i refundedher. she is probably with a bucket of popcorn smiles. yet ill never know, so i become more and more cutious down the internet highway,
