It's situational, really: in some instances, someone having armor means there a mechanic that changes how an enemy functions; like the Chieftan Puff in the Tangled world, where it's stacked or can unleash a bunch of needles at you while it has armor.....use Aero, it looses most of its attacks and its defenses, making it easy pickings for a keyblade. For Young Xehanort, he gains his armor when he stops time, and ONLY during that: that would mean that he can only manipulate time during the battle when he has armor up.
Every armor in this game has a different mechanic to get rid of as stated above, for example marluxias armor can be removed with a single fire (it will even stun him and create an opening for you) just like the chieftain puff armor from tangled world only takes a single aero to break And in young xehanorts case it looks like his armor is really weak against counter attacks, removing it instantly if you counter at the precise moment. Not sure about xions armor, but I have seen a video (Roxas vs xion mod) where a single water destroyed xions armor? Really not sure about that, haven't tried it by myself.
While this battle isn't super hard given just overpower Roxas is gameplay wise; Can we just agree & appreciate how this the recording of this fight looks like it came out of a high action anime. with scenes like... 0:02 - 0:14 Protagonist learns of this foes ability to teleport. 0:22 - 0:36 Our hero missed it the 1st time but this heard for certain that foe uttered a phrase about "時を ...." , and starts diluting time on his end to fight back. 0:41 - 1:22 The battle has truly begun by now, no more need to feel out the foes power. (The fighting getting particularly fierce at 0:55 - 1:04, & specially at 1:15 - 1:20 with how it looks like the hero could have cause the ground to shatter on impact, only for this foe to have teleported out of harms way & clap his hands at the destruction before returning to business.) 1:24 - 1:42 Combat still intense the protagonist can't help but wonder "why ?, why start holding back now you ?" 1:45 - 2:07 Visible shock "A time dilatation of this caliber !!!, When did he start weaving such an incantation ?, could he already be weaving anot----- !? (scream of pain)" as our hero feels a sword jaggedly serrate its way into his Right-side shoulder, down an to the left through the skin grazing the spine, 'almost' tearing a hole about the back lower left of his stomach missing by an inch; All before the blades slash carves its way out. 2:11 - 2:43 In spite of having magic to seal back such wound with rapid haste the conflict if clearly ringing its toll on our protagonist, the shift to a defensive style of conserving energy being very visible. 2:50 - 3:31 It is at this point the Hero must now make his assault, if the madness is to reach a conclusion; Creating a clash of most violent beauty (3:04 - 3:10) as ice maybe cold enough to freeze the grounds of hell chaotically crashes abound; (3:11 - 3:26) Swordsman ship looking as if it were a dance atop the previous sheets of frost thus finally turning the tides battle. 3:33 - 3:46 It's like our hero thought earlier "More incantations were weaved throughout that entire mess but this Ends NOW !"
What I like most about Roxas' playstyle is that he can take the fight to the enemy instead of constantly blocking all the time and waiting to counter. This feels like a real fight between Keyblade masters, not just puzzle boss where you have to time each counter just right.
