***** It isn't used often (in top cut) because it's very gimmicky and unreliable. You can't just throw out a Clefable with minimize and expect to win. Knowing when to use minimize and surprise the opponent in one game or maybe even a second is when you know the person using minimize is good.

If I am not wrong, Smogon rules which many multiplayers use does not allow you to use Double Team and Minimize because it then essentially turns the match into a luck based coin toss system. But this championship obviously doesn't follow Smogon.
Really like how these two were really being friendly to each other, actually added substance to an otherwise dull battle imo.

Watching battles like this makes me flash back to when I watched the first ever pokemon episode, where Ash was watching a battle and preparing for his pokemon journey. I feel the same way now, looking up professional battles because I just started getting DEEP into pokemon besides just playing storyline. I want to become a good trainer someday :D
To everyone complaining about Minimize:
Unskilled players will spam the move turn 1 to try to win out of pure luck.
Skilled players save it until they know they can use some possible misses give them an advantage in battle. Similar concept to relying on Rock Slide flinches, really.
Unskilled players just need to gain more skill and the skilled people need to help the unskilled become skilled. Luck is important in any battle, but a skilled player relies less on luck and more on skill.

I can understand how everyone uses these same Pokemon over and over but it boring really when there's no diversity. People probably got excited over that Pachirisu for the sake of it not being a Hydriegon, Jellicent, Kanga, Mawile, Landorus, Thundurus, Talonflame or Conkeldurr.

i mean , you bring muk with invest on hp, sp def, with only poison jab stab. + minimize, venom drench, acid armor, with leftovers and you have a rock. its still threated by ground/psichyc but it goes through everything once it sets up the minimizes

im not exactly sure, there usually is, but the bigger thing is the points they get from the event that get them their worlds invitation.
in nationals you can get scholarships and the trophy,not sure about money though....

Reinhard Von Lohengramm It's a strategy no one ever prepares for, because evasion clause are so common in non-official formats. In VGC, you need to be prepared for the unexpected.

130*1.5/2= about 97 power for overheat on that Jellicent, while earth power does 90 without special attack drop, only 7 power in difference, not worth taking the risk on choosing overheat, also there is a chance for overheat to miss as well

Thank you. Diversity is important, but winning is too. People need to learn that they can't just show up with a new poke and expect to win. Results will always beat idealism, paragraphs and paragraphs of reasoning won't hold any water without effort.

EDIT: I realize that it takes hours to make Perfect EV trained Pokemon and Get the exact IVs and Stats you want. Sometimes you can't take the risk of using something new... sadly.
Reinhard Von Lohengramm You have a point, I guess I didn't take the Movesets and EV and IV spread into account. Even so, most of the pokemon in this battle had the same tricks besides maybe the Metagross.
Then again, once you enter VGC you need all the best Pokes and a way to trick your opponent which is where the movesets come in play. So maybe you're right.
KaytchJam ' The winning side here is actually a relatively original team. There's no Pokemon you never see, but they weren't exactly a list of the most common VGC Pokemon you can pick. They were supporting those common Pokemon, but also managed to shine in their own right and break out of just a support role.
People have been trying out Pachirisu in Japan, as it's always been known as one of the few Pokemon that can use Follow Me. Se Jun Park only popularized it by synergizing it well on his team.
Zettablob I know that, but have the Japanese players ever used it in Nationals?

Why not making a retro tournament where people that play gen 1, gen 2 and even gen 3 do a similar tournament to the VGC?
Because that is stupid gen 1 and gen 2 do not have double battles allowing people to stall like jerks. Gen 3 is dumb because everyone will need to go buy a link cable. What is up with you and people that can not take off their nostalgia goggles?

I know legendaries have been granted as acceptable competitive Pokemon and their stats have been lowered to make them less powerful but I still don't agree with legends in battle

The Pachirisu win is the most interesting one.....
Well, Pachirisu ain't winning anything this format. The Pokemon diversity just lowered its viability in usage by a whole lot. Landorus-T in particular really hurts Pachirisu's ability to do anything.
..I think both players had chances to swing things the other way at the end of the 1st & 2nd games if hadn't given up, jelli could of got another hit with a burn or crit on clef in the next move, low chances are still chances. & in the second game keeping up offensive pressure with earth power could of gotten more def drops as well as taking advantage of the flinch that happened when ran protected, think that one was mebe a misclick though ;P . All in all a great match & the better player won I think :)

That's half true. Terrakion would still be seen in a lot of usage because it deals with a lot of threats. Bisharp, Mega Charizard-y, Hydreigon, etc.

I know I may get a called a "Smogon n00b" ot something like that for saying this, but why Minimize? How can a strategy where your opponent can almost never hit you fair? It's like making a Substitute that lets luck determine when it wants to be broken. Sorry, but that was just cheap to me.

jk. Minimize is usually quite a good idea with Chansey. Also, smogon isn't always correct. I once saw smogon claim reuniclus was bad if it didn't use calm mind. I use assault vest reuniclus so suck it smogon \o/
I'm not saying Smogon is always right. I don't think Cradily should be RU and Shuckle certainly shouldn't be NU. Also my Reniclus has Psychic, Focus Blast, Trick Room, and Recover and i WRECKS everything. I got a 31 battle win streak in the Battle Maison with him. I'm just saying that Minimize feels cheap because if your lucky no one can ever touch you. It's like near-invincibility.

Just went on Showdown. Apparently, Baton passing of two stats at the same time and having a different Pokemon with Magic Bounce is banned. WHAT? My Baton pass user is a flipping DRIFBLIM!!!! Why would anyone ban that?!?!

Mytical pokemon are banned and fro 2016 ypu are able to use 2 restricted legends as longs they are able to be captured in gen 6 games

You cant people have been practicing VGC for such a long time. Like honestly check out Smogon, they have different tiers like Ubers,ou,uu and even little cub that people can only use under evolved ones, VGC is to see who can battle best not to make the most creative team. It takes hours to come up with these strats and EVs is super involving and people have spent years learning it, changing it would be a Negative even if they banned Kang, something else would take its place, pokemon is very unbalenced but like I said Smogon is a website that balences to make it more fair and they state they only bann stuff when it messes up team creativity
Then bring a Typhlosion to a regional and make top 4. Ashton Cox did it, so instead of complaining about it, you should actually try to change the meta game.

LOL! Mega Kangaskhan is the most easiest thing to counter. It's move set is *extremely* predictable and only has a base speed of 100. If you can't play around that, you probably shouldn't be playing VGC.
base speed of 100 is to good for it it should lose speed when it mega evolves since it has power and can take a few hits

Certain moves need to be banned, like Minimize and Double Team, unfair moves that make the game unfun.
Nobody is going to use Minimize and Double Team and get to the finals like what happened now. Knowing when to throw it out at a perfect time shows how a skilled player is able to abuse luck.

This is not Smogon. Rock Slide is too good and throws games way too much in to luck. Double Team and Minimize can be prevented, flinches from rock slide cant.

Dude, I'll play circles around you. Rock Slide is broken because you cant prevent the flinches. It can also flinch both Pokemon and completely prevent turns from happening. Its too good because.
In a bring 6 pick 4 format, having half you team from doing anything pretty much is game over. It has nothing to do with poor playing. If you want to play smogon, then go play smogon, who specializes in single formats, where a flinch hardly matters. You cant find a win condition when you cant even make a move.
Even the top VGC players will tell you Rock Slide is a problem. Its the best attack in VGC.

Mega kang is not broken in doubles like it is singles.Its fairly easy to deal with and does not give me much problems. I do think Rock Slide should be looked at. I dont want it banned but I think the base power should be reduced to like 50 and the flinch rate reduced to 10% or have a flag that prevents both pokemon from flinching.
