How to remove and install the door handle carrier in an E53 X5 BMW.
This is a common failure item on the X5 model, as the cable stretches and the door handle will cause you trouble when opening the door. Sometimes the door handle will stick out and not sit flush in the closed position.

Is there a tool for snapping back the plastic separator (on the cable) into groove. Trying to do so by add is a mission
Thanks worked great - Pro tip : unbolt the air bag but do not disconnect. Just hang with a long twist tie from the door lock. Saves you much time and hassle by not digging around the trunk , unplugging battery, and then having to reset all the dash warning light as a result afterwards.
Nice one man 👍
Yea because everyone loves working with a live pyrotechnic in their face. Unplug the battery. This is not a place for shortcuts.
How to reset the airbag light after work complete?
@@tsparks4133 unplug the battery first and you won't have to!
@chamberlin1 too late for that.
I wish everyone giving a tutorial on anything that needs repairing would do it as well as you have. You are succinct, articulate, cautious and definitely know what you are doing. Excellent presentation. If my 2017 X5 gives me any trouble after the Certification ends you will be getting a call! Where do you live and how much do you charge an hour!
Thanks mike I appreciate you! Happy holidays.
5 years later, still helping me out. Thanks mate!
Craig H cheers thanks Craig
Hello and thank you for this tutorial. I followed it to the letter and was able to change out my driver side door handle. Although, it took my several hours to complete 5hr. in fact, My mission to do this DIY was accomplished. No longer do I have to leave my window half open so that I can gain access to the inside door handle. Yay!! Thanks again.
That's so great to hear! Congrats on accomplishing this big DIY!
I just had this issue but you don’t have to leave your window open. If you hold the unlock button the car rolls down all windows by itself
Thank's for showing most of the process of this replacement, but for the uninitiated you have omitted to point out some important little details like the need to hold the inside door opening latch in the closed position while attaching the cable to it, I noticed you did that, but apparently it is something a novice might miss, also after the battery has been disconected I believe that some process is needed to get the computer to function properly, that could justify a mentioning. Your "how to" video was very well done as was your explanatory comments. I guess you are so familiar with this job that you may forget some ordinary folk who initially haven't got a clue may need every step illustrated and explained so they can follow the process successfully. Still, 9.5 out of 10, so thank you for sharing.
Stay safe, regards Niels.
Excellent quality video with no extra meaningless talk! Like how you fast forward through the loosening and tightening of screws.
Robert Bonnewell thanks Robert!
Just finished repairing my doorhandle, these are the most thorough instructions I have ever seen. Thank you!!! The only difficult parts were positioning the new door latch and securing the ball joint, I had to use pliers to give it a squeeze other than that these were great instructions
Marco Thomas thanks Marco I appreciate u!
Replaced driver and passenger door carriers this morning thanks to this video. Perfect tutorial thanks mate 👍
Nice work!
Great instruction video man, just happened to my today and I heard some part falling down into the door cavity thinking that's that. So I removed the trim and found small metal pieces there so I knew I won't be fixing this problem. Then I watch your video and ordered new assembly. Thanks brother!
Thanks so much x2. Did this 2 years ago and had to do it again. Greatly appreciate your video as I watched it back then and most recently now. Some parts obviously look deceptively easy so for anyone doing this as a beginner - please reserve lots of time for trouble shooting.
Thanks man. You ruined my afternoon but saved my life😂. I owe you one
Its crazy, almost everything that has gone wrong with my recently purchased 2006 x5, you have a video to fix it. My driver side handle broke so I went to get it fixed. Now my passenger handle broke (I feel like my car is cursed) but I will try to fix it myself this time around. Thanks again for these DIY videos. Keep them coming!!
Dani Maynard congrats on the new ride! Haha yes I thought ours was a lemon too; the X5 provides a glorious bounty of problems to make videos on. The pain will stop after a few months once you tackle the usual problem areas. Try to stick with it for a little while!
Thank you so much for this, I replaced my door carrier yesterday, & these step by step instructions made the job easy
Hi, Have just completed drivers door internal carrier. Replaced front passenger door handle carrier about 3 years ago. Your instructions are very precise and I followed stage by stage using your video. Only this time I did not disconnect the battery and carefully unscrewed the side Air Bag leaving it connected to it's plug and hung it up from the door using cable ties. I did find as previously having an issue removing the cable ball and the plastic cable bracket locator, also with fitting the new part.
BMW X5 are always a pain to work on, so thanks for your video
Watched your video 4 times last night. The part arrived today and I knew exactly what to without watching it again. Thanks for the info :)
Hey Bimmer Zeit, like others you have my appreciation. I have swapped out both driver and passenger fronts. Have just done the driver again lol. Your video is easy to follow and get the job done. Great work. Very appreciated.
Thank you for this video. Mine busted yesterday morning when it was 12F here in VT after a warmer night of sleet. Ordered the carrier immediately off of amazon for $40 with next day shipping (BMW wanted $160 and it would of taken 3-5 days to arrive). For anyone doing this repair in cold weather - the vapor barrier glue gets rock hard when its cold, it takes a lot of motivating. I, sadly, put a couple of little tears in mine but nothing major. A hair dryer or something would of made a world of difference. Thanks again, keep up the videos.
Thanks for watching the channel, great to hear you repaired it. The aftermarket handle is still holding up well for us many miles later!
My aftermarket front carrier only lasted 2yrs before giving up... paid $50 for a Febi carrier. Hope it lasts longer
I have just replaced the door handle carrier out side in between rain showers with the temp around 50f, used a paint stripping hot air gun to soften up the mastic when removing the vapour barrier & again when refitting, the black goop gets every where!
Great video and very detailed with your camera.thanks .lots of money saved
Thanks for this, followed it to do my own repair, saved me a ton of money!
Great Tutorial! Had to do the front passenger today and this helped make it quick and smooth.
Carlos Martinez thanks Carlos!
BIMMER ZEIT carlos necesito pieza de power steering me puedes ayudar

Hands down best video about doing the carriers I've watched thanks!!! Subbed
Outstanding tutorial on a common issue with the E-53 models. Straight to the point and well explained. Thank you.
Great video it helped me out a lot, I have just replaced my rear right door handle that went on my 2003 X5 E53 last week. I did have a bit of hard time removing the internal mechanism but I just unbolted the door latch which really freed up the area. I noticed someone said about leaving the airbag connected but I removed it as those buggers scare me (I did also remove the cars battery). All back together now and working better than before. Thank you for making this video!
Great vid 😉saved me a heap in labour costs, Thankyou
Thanks buddy for taking the time to do this....job well done....I've done this about 4-5 times on both of my E53s but it's always nice to be able to pull up a well done video to "freshen up" my memory.
nashvilledaveb thanks Dave! Lol I have also done this several more times since uploading this, and reference my own video as a refresher lol!
Really nice. Good job. By far, the best tutorial out there on this subject. Kudos to you, brother !
A big thanks for your video, I did it like a professional 👌😁 you helped me a lot 😉
Thanks for this video, perfect instructions, i would never have done this without your guidance. Took me 90 minutes but it rained twice and hailed once, not ideal!
Great video and information. Just enough information without unnecessary talk.
Perfect explanation, straight to the point 👍
Thanks for making a clear how to guide and to Henry for his suggestion also. Cheers Steve
I'm going to try and follow this video and do it myself to save some money, my track record hasn't always been the best with these kind of things bit I'm feeling confident after watching your video! Wish me luck!
M_Stas take your time, take time for a break if you feel frustrated. Good luck!
@@BIMMERZEITT Cheers bud, appreciate it! By the way your video found it's way over to me in London England! Thanks for such a detailed, well explained guide. I'll let you know how I get on!
Thank you for sharing this. This is a great instructional tutorial. The only issue I had was the plug in the door was plastic, not rubber. It was a bear removing it. Patience, really listening to you, and application with the right tools and parts make for a great project and sense of accomplishment.
Dan Hongell thanks Dan, great to hear it! Yeah those rubber plugs harden with age!
Great instructions we'll explained and camera work in focus throughout, really helpful 👍
I replaced both the driver and passenger side door handle carrier per instructions of this video. It was easy to follow and everything went ok. I tested to make sure the door handle open and closed several times and everything seems to work just fine. After I was all complete with both doors, I reconnected the battery, I locked and unlocked the door with the key remote to test and make sure the locks were working. Then when I tried to open the door with the door handle and the door won't open from the outside or inside the car. What do you think went wrong? Everything seem to be working good till I reconnedted the battery and now neither door opens from inside or outside. Any advise?
Brilliant bit of video. Good quality images. Well done.
Greatest video of “how to” out there!
/M
Awesome! Just saved myself over $500 AUD! Very clear, step by step instructions. Thank you
Great video, I need to change my drivers door and will be using this video! Excellent
Thanks AJ! I have to do the passenger side on this X5 soon. I'll also be referring back to this video lol
Thanks Man for your example movie ! U are great teacher. Is problem for a life with handles all door BMW x5..
thanks, appreciate you! happy holidays
Solid tutorial! This really helped me out. 👍🏽
Worked perfectly! Thank you for the step by step.
Awesome video, great direction. Thank you
Amazingly great how too! Just changed drivers and passengers front carries today and couldn’t have done it without your help! First one took about 2 hours, second around 1. Thanks dude, you’re awesome! Used a blade to help not tearing the vapour barrier and greased up the new carriers before installing.
on my car, turned out that just the cable balljoint came off 😂 i've put a zip tie to make sure it doesn't come off again.
thanks for the instructions @bimmerzeitt! very helpful, only thing i was missing is that for the top clips on the doorcard (just under the window) i needed to really put pressure towards the inside of the car to get the doorcard off
Very nice detailed, but simple tutorial. Thanks for this!
Helpful video . I have 2 broken handles on my 2005×5 bmw
@bimmerzeit I have changed everything and door was opening from both interior and exterior great. I locked the door manually and now the door will not open at all from both inside and out!?! Anyways forward?
Very informative and step by step guide. Best video I've seen. Thank you
Chris Halk thanks bro I appreciate that
Almost a perfect video!! Missing the part on removing and reinstalling the door glass.
شكرا من القلب الى القلب ❤️ Thank YouVery Much ❤❤❤
Great ,I looked step by step and I did it alone, thank you! Greeting from Austria
Thanks for this i couldnt have achieved it without your video. The only problem i had was i should have bent the cable into shape before putting it in place. Cheers
Great video and thank you. Could not had done this without breaking things although it was crazy to me how you spent 2 seconds snapping things together like it was nothing when it took me forever to do the same. Don't know if I'll ever figure out how to reconnect the inner door handle. This was a job from hell.
Great video mate. Just watched this before doing mine. Very easy and clear to follow thank you 👌👍
*Thank you so very much for this tutorial.*
Very helpful tutorial, thanks
This guy makes it look so easy mine is being a real nightmare. I can’t get anything to line up
Great video step by step to the max is the rear outter door handle the same as the front looks the same size and shape I stripped most of my platic grip twisting it in the bracket not sure how long it will hold up it's stripped good
Cheers mate 🤘🏼
This is so helpful. Thank you so much for guiding us. And I have a issue now that my BMW X5 2006 got locked and wont open from the key. so what should I do now to open it.
Hey Bob, glad this helped you out! If the key is dead, it may still work when put in the door mechanically. Did you try that? If all else fails, call the dealer to get a new key made.
yeh i changed the Battery in the back. now lets see. and the key doesn't shows any signs of being alive except starting the engine.
Bob Edwards your locking tumbler mechanism is broken, if you can insert key and twist either direction with full 360 deg rotation. It needs to be replaced. Parts/fix is cheap. Amazon sells a great repair kit.
Thank you for your tutorial. I have a E60 and it was fully painted. They left the door panels and the handles on the trunk. I will try to install them in the morning. Hopefully will go smooth.
great DIY!!!!
Thank you
I have an 2011 X70 with the same condition. From looking at the parts list on the X70 it seems that the carriage assembly has changed. Is the replacement still the same?
Fantastic DIY! This will come in handy one day.
Thanks! Hope it helps.
Suprisingly a lot of editing done just for a simple instruction video. Subscribed.
Excellent but a few pro tips: 1) window down when removing panel ... 2) be VERY careful when removing panel ... the plastic connector to the interior handle can easily break then you will have another BIGGER problem and have to replace the entire inner handle mechanism too ... VERY BAD 3) after remove panel, reconnect battery, raise window or it is impossible to install the new door handle because the down window will be blocking, then unplug battery. Notice the videos, looks like he does this, the window is down when removing the panel, and up when installing the handle etc.
Thnx for video
Hoping to get my bolt join cable connected in next few hours ✌
Just finished the work thanks for the video.
Thanks a lot. Very good video. The inside of the door cover pops back in when you push it with your hand ?
this is very concise and gives me confidence to do the repair myself. my handle on my x5 won't open the door too. what are the specific tools you used besides the nylon prying tools? i only have a screwdriver. size of allen wrench?
This video was awesome and made installation much easier. Thanks for the help
Thanks my friend your vedio and the way you explained was exlant thanks ever so much t.c
Fabtastic video. Just helped me do mine!
This is great instructional video. Very clear and simple. Thanks so much
Ryan, thank you! Glad this helped.
That carrier goes in real easy for you. I see you removed the window actuator to do so. Pretty sneaky! For the rest of us, removing the lock latch will make it so the carrier goes in just as smoothly without any contortion or witchcraft.
Alan Trulock not trying to be sneaky about anything! The car had a dead lock control unit, bad window regulator and broken door handle when I bought it, so I made three separate videos while taking everything apart over a single day. Most things look easier on video but are definitely a real pain in the ass!
Grate video , thank you for sharing !
Clean tutorial. Thank you very much. Also good looking out with that link to the door handle.
Thank you so so much very easy explanation!!!!You are the best!!!
Eric, thank you!
Actually, you don't have to disconnect the battery. You can take a bungee cord and hang the airbag from the lock once you remove everything. Additionally, if you do decide to disconnect your battery, you're probably gonna want to leave it connected long enough to pull off the door panel, access the window, and move the window up/down to the access ports where you can then remove the bolt and plastic retainer clip(s) that move the window up/down along the window regulator.
Great video, thanks so much!!
Excellent video!
Timothy Graham Tim, thank you
Great teaching/DIY video, however, I'm having a great deal of difficulty trying to insert/reattach the airbag harness!!
Awesome job
What size was the alan key did you use @3:54 ?
4
thank you for sharing your knowledge with us a very well-done video do you have by any chance a video for the same procedure but for the passenger side? cheers and keep up the good work
Thanks Bob. It’s essentially the same for both sides. If you own the car long enough you’ll do this job a few times - lol!
@@BIMMERZEITT Thanks cheers and stay safe
Brilliant, thanks for your time
thank u paul
Good video👍 I have a problem with no solution yet, had done very similar repair just also had to take out entire lock mechanism and after putting all back in have tested the door all seemed ok and was working, but as soon I assembled everything and shut the door it dead locked 🤦 one thing I haven’t done is disconnecting the battery and unplugging airbag (just moved it out of the way and cable tied to the door while doing work)
Now driver door can’t be opened by any means. Disconnecting battery and leaving overnight did not help and have tried everything 🤦 last hope here before I start taking door apart while it dead shut 😭
Great video. I'll be doing my door handle tomorrow.
thanks! Good luck, take your time.
Best instructional video I've seen on youtube, only question, and I may have missed it - how long should it take with decent skills?
Thanks Dave! I would say between 2-3 hours.
Thank you, Good video, could be even better if you came and demonstrated on my X5! I just broke both front door handles when the car got iced up, I guess tugging on them hard when the doors were frozen shut broke the remarkably fragile parts. I'll hold the video camera. More seriously, what should I expect tp pay someone to do these repairs?
+andrew houlding thanks Andrew! I don't know the exact book time that this job calls for, but I would expect an indie BMW shop to charge somewhere around 2 to 3 hours labor for this job.
Awesome vid, did it myself, was as easy as you made it look!! Thxx
+Antonio Louis Thanks Antonio, glad I could help!
Dear Bimmer Zeit,
I replaced the front passanger side handle carrier assembly, and after put back the door panel, I realized it cannot be closed or opened from the key. The handle works well, I can open the door from the inside as well. Using the car key or the interior locking switch every other doors lock and open fine. But this one can be closed (and opened) only manually using the locking spike. I know, the source of this problem must be somewhere in the locking mechanic, but I can not see iexactly which part went wrong. Do you have any idea?
Thank you in advance!
Bálint Jankovics Hi , I am also having the same issue . Can you help me how you have fix this issue?
Perfect, Thanks for a great video
Thanks Michael!
My dorman carrier was off like 3mm :'( where did you buy a good one??
Thank you in advance for this informative DIY video. I have a question, do you have any idea how to fix the driver side mirror. It does not respond for adjustment when the arrow buttons are pressed. Fyi the passenger side mirror works fine. Not sure why the driver side won't move or adjust. I've been manually adjusting the window from the outside. Any suggestions work be appreciated. Thanks
It is possible that the side mirror motor is bad, but is also possible that the switch itself is bad. You can try testing both to see if power is going to them. Try this: hold down the adjust button for the driver side with your window down and put your ear up to the mirror - can you hear any noise, whirring, or is it totally dead?
Thankyou so much mine just went out this morning really annoying
thank you very much, I was able to do the job myself and save money. Great tutorial.
thanks! so great to hear it
lol, great video, but where’s your window though? Sure makes it a pain to navigate the carrier around the window, but my regulator wasn’t broken, amazingly, so I didn’t want to pull that whole thing out!
