I respect how ma'am turns subjective whenever female role in literary history is talked about throughout the playlist. You're a gem ma'am. Bowing down to you 🙏
"The Curtain" was twice the size of "The Theatre" and worked in tandem with it, with James Burbage doing a profit share with its owner so these two theatre co-operated being just 200 metres apart. I have read that The Curtain & The Theatre represented about 50% of the capacity its of Elizabethan London theatres at the peak! Curtain is a reference to the stone wall of a fort, the flat wall between two bastions and not a reference to a stage (cloth) curtain. The Curtain and The Theatre were just outside the City of London Wall, so it makes senses to be called that. If you went to The Curtain, you were going just outside the City of London boundary, a protected area with its own laws. The plague was killing thousands of Londoners, then just a small population, so there was a sense to keeping plays, sword fighting and other crowd-pleasers outside the City,. The Theatre was a short lease, just 21 years, so they had to quite in 1598 and move elsewhere, to the Southbank outside of the City of London boundaries, but The Curtain carried on into the 1620's. The Lord Chamberlain's Men gained exclusivity to perform in the City, another reason for their fame and success.
