  • This is a slightly revised video of yesterdays upload. I reviewed yesterday's notes on determining the stack height to set layshaft end float and made some revisions to published documentation for clarification on a couple of points.
1). In yesterday's video posted on TH-cam I miss-state where on the bearing the measurement is taken. I say "on inner race" when I should have said "outer race". The shim stack rests against the outer race so all measurements should taken from the outer race.
2). I use two approaches to verify shim stack height on the layshaft: a) Using precision blocks, measure from gasket surface down to bearing outer race (no covers installed), and b) install large cover and measure directly (no precision blocks needed) from top of cover down to bearing outer race. This approach is not demonstrated in the video. I should also point out that the video captures a method used for demonstration purposes only and does not necessarily reflect final outcome or results. The work is done behind the scenes. I found errors made on the videos after a review of my notes. I should review my notes BEFORE I publish videos…doh!
In order to arrive at shim stack I compare the stack height determined from each approach as a cross check. As stated above, I did not demonstrate the more direct approach (b) in the video.
From my notes the two approaches when compared were different by only 0.005" which helps to validates findings. The numbers shown in red on the chart show in the video reflect the stack height actually used and the numbers come from the more direct approach (b).
