Was that really 53 years ago? I was a 26-year-old working in an aircraft design office in Cambridge and at 2-55pm I went to the car park, sat in my Cortina GT and listened to the final few minutes. It was indeed a sad moment and I had to listen to radio Caroline on my journey home. If only we could go back to those times and that music!
My best friend and I (13 and 12 years old at the time) were determined to be outside Radio London's headquarters in Curzon Street at 3.00 pm. Unfortunately we forgot to find out exactly where Curzon Street was before we set out and at 3.00 pm we were outside Liberty, a long way away. That was my favourite pirate station.
Sad, sad day. I remember it well. I sat in my car listening to the carrier wave for a few minutes, just hoping they would come back on. But no, simply the best of all the pirate radio stations was gone and I just couldn't be doing with Caroline.
I remember listening to this last moment on Big L. I was 14, and so gutted I scored the place on the radio dial where it was tuned to as a memorial. Never really took to Radio 1 after that. A flabby pastiche, with fake pirates style jingles that advertised nothing except - Radio 1. Initially organised by old BBC staffers from the old Light programme I suspect. Dad at the Disco!
I was fourteen and at my Aunt's house, I tuned her Baird AM-FM radio in and listened to the end, I'm sure they played the National Anthem, does anybody else remember this?
Reminds me of the Pat and Pete Show on Beacon Radio circa. 1987. Some bloke used to play a tape recording of this, all the time on this phone in programme. Bizarre.
I was 15 and cried my eyes out. Those words from Paul Kaye set the direction for my life…..
I remember this sad day very well... Radio London (Big L) shall never be forgotten...
I think it is already forgotten, unlike Radio Caroline which had and has the attitude of Who Dares Wins.
Was listening to this as it happened on twickenham green in august 1967, a very sad day .

Was that a flash of 'Fluff' we saw in the clip? Wot a great Radio DJ? The Absolute Best! RIP Alan (Fluff) Freeman.
Alan Freeman didn't work on Radio London... So, no it wasn't him....

Had the T-shirt: I dig Big L for 266
I did, too. Still have a photo.
What can one say about the terrible end to this excellent era?
