The French soldier, the French Foreign Legionaire and the on-ground Command Staff fought the Communist in the early days of the war mostly in static defense from strategically positioned Forts along the Chinese border. After the Democrat controlled US Congress left Chiang Kai Shek, our Nationalist ally, out to dry! Cut off funding to the Nationalist whereas the Communist were getting all they needed from Russia. It was only a matter of time before ammo, arms, fuel, food, and all things needed to conduct war ran out. The US Congress helped the Communist take China because of their actions. Our Allie, the Nationalist Army was betrayed. The survivors fled to Taiwan and very quickly the Chinese began to fund the Communist Vietmingh with arms, training, and volunteers to help the Vietmingh fight the French. Colonialism with all its drawbacks to the country of Vietnam, was still a better and more civilized form of governing that what the Communist offered. Murder, torture, terrorism, theft were just a small sampling of the evil that Communism brought to those who disagreed. The theft of property from the wealthy, the murder of the wealthy, the murder of whole families these evil beings did in the name of Communism, The French soldier and FFL soldier fought bravely and courageously against this evil called Communism. At Dien Bien Phu (1954) these brave souls put up a very spirited defense and made the Communist leadership pay a very high price tag in their soldiers killed charging fortified positions. Of course the deaths of their own soldiers mattered not to the Communist goal of conquest. French Paras jumped into Dien Bien Phu knowing full well the battle was in extreme doubt. Soldiers come no better than this sort of self sacrifice. The opposition operated by intimidation, execution, and suicide charges to motivate their soldiers. The US had a chance to lend a further helping hand before Dien Bien Phu fell. We had an awesome group of B-29 Super Fortress Bombers stationed in the Philippines, within was flying distance of the battlefield. Eisenhower blinked because of no backing from our allies and the Communist would go on to win at Dien Bien Phu. Had President Eisenhower carried through this bombing mission to save our allies at this battle, history might have been rewrote. If our B-29's had bombed and destroyed the Communist positions surrounding Dien Bien Phu, the French could have gone on to defeat Communism in Indochina, and thus spared the US 50,000+ brave American soldiers that died in the second Vietnam War (1962-1972). Missed or lost opportunities to change history for the good. Never ever never forget the dark, brutal, barbaric history of Communism!
