What is the meaning of this mantra? Is there a translation in English for the Sanskrit words?
Also thanks for sharing precious dharma with us 🙏🙏🙏

Thank you and thank you for asking. Sorry we should have added the translation. The translation of this mantra, accordingt to the Dharmachakra Translation Committee is:
“Oṁ, amogha jewel-lotus of the splendorous great mudrā! Blaze! Set in motion! Hūṁ!”
Another translation from Professor Mark Unno, is roughly:
Praise be to the flawless, all-pervasive illumination of the great mudra [or seal of the Buddha ]. Turn over to me the jewel, lotus and radiant light.
But literal translations aren't necessarily that meaningful, as we lose a lot of nuances, since some syllables have extra layers of meaning. Maha Mudra, for example, means "great seal" and , roughly means: the great seal
mahamudra, (Sanskrit: “the great seal”) in Vajrayana (Tantric) Buddhism, the final goal, the union of all apparent dualities. Mudra, in addition to its more usual meaning, has in Vajrayana Buddhism the esoteric meaning of prajna (“wisdom”)... and so on. Each mantra has many layers of meaning. 1:25 I asked a Shingon priest if this interpretation of Mahavirochana Buddha made sense to him. There might have been a language barrier with me trying to explain this part. And he had difficulty trying to explain his understanding of Dainichi Nyorai in English. Although, I am interested in reading a translation of this sutra. It is probably not part of any Japanese tradition. But yesterday, I had a very powerful experience chanting and looking upon an image of Mahavirochana.

Thank you for your comment. You sometimes get that flavor from Sutras, which are colorful and metaphorical. But, there's quite a big difference between a Buddha and a God. God, or gods, by definition have ego. Buddhas are ego-less.
We give them names in Sutras for us to more easy comprehend, but the Enlightened Mind doesn't cling to the Ego. Maha Vairochana isn't really a name, it's a description. It means Great (MAHA) and Illuminator (VAIROCHANA).
Another key difference is that Buddhas are not creators, as we think of gods. They are transcenders of all that. They didn't create the universe or suffering, they are trying to help transcend suffering.
When the Sutra says all Buddhas emanate from Maha Vairochana, this is what it essentially means: "all Buddhas emanate from Great Illuminator (Maha Vairochana). All Buddha's are one. (This is a big topic: Sunyata and Dependent Arising) There's no notion of creation, in Buddhism, but Dependent-Arising. Our self-aware ego arises from our attachments. That ego, arises from causes. Maha Vairochana, isn't an "entity" as we think of a self-aware god, but rather, the essence of all Buddhas, all wisdoms and universal compassion. He is "Great Illuminator." Hope that helps.

Well when I googled Vairocana Buddha in Japan the giant Black Vairocana Buddha in Nara Japan comes up! And I have a Samantabhra Bodhisattva statue made in China that is Black! And I have a image of Kuan Yin that is black and holding a black child in his arms! So I just wonder if something came up later changing the colors! "Amitabha"🙏🙏🙏

    • @BuddhaWeekly
      @BuddhaWeekly  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

That is likely a form (without a link reference I have no way to see what you're seeing) (all Buddha's have many forms) especially given Vairochana's role in Japanese Buddhism as the Cosmic Buddha (Maha Vairochana Sutra), colour certainly varies by tradition. (Cosmic or Adi Buddhas are often Black (but not always, for example Vajradhara.) (I have seen some poorly attributed paintings online that are black but not referenced with details.)
More likely, that might be the material (i.e. stone, or blackwood) or a wooden statue where the gold gilt is tarnished of flaked off. Statues are often gold, even if they represent red, blue or white deities, because they're copper, brass or other metals. For instance, I do have a very old wooden carved Japanese Kannon I've had for thirty years, and with the gilt all worn off, the Bodhisattva is sort of a very dark brown black, except for patches of gold gilt in places. Gilt is painted on, and doesn't last. (But that's the aging of the wood and lack of gilt. It would originally have been very delicately painted with gilt treatments.
For example, this famous Japanese statue in the Great Temple Todai-ji, this is I believe black material and it's very ancient (it's been recast many times: "The Great Buddha statue has been recast several times for various reasons, including earthquake damage, and the head was recast in Edo period 1615-1867) while the hands were recast a hundred years earlier : www.thezengateway.com/assets/content/TodaijiDaibutsu0224.jpg
The wood antiques (and many temple statues) are often naturally black.
The "black" esoteric Vairochana is normally Achala, who is a wrathful emanation of Maha Vairochana according the Maha Vairochana Sutra, but there could be practice forms of a more peaceful Buddha in black. (Vairochana is the Buddha of Light and associated also with the sun at noon.)
Having said that, all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas emanate in countless forms to relate to beings suffering in Samsara (including every colour which represent the activities.). For example, Amitabha, emanates in hundreds of forms, as does Avalokiteshvara (you'll find this referenced in the Universal Gate Sutra or Chapter 25 of the Lotus Sutra . We have a video with a recitation here: th-cam.com/video/1_PA-C7dJd0/w-d-xo.html )
Also, you rarely see the colour symbology of the Five Dhyani Buddhas represented in Chan or Zen or Chinese or Japanese Buddhism. Usually all Buddhas tend to be represented without the colour attributions.
Hope that helps. In kindness, BW

@@BuddhaWeekly Amitabha friend! Thanks for your response! I'm not trying to be controversy. But in the video it was emphasize Vairocana being white and when Vairocana was mentioned in Japan in the video, I googled Vairocana and it presented the giant Black Vairocana in Japan. And there is a Buddhist text called ( Gems of Buddhist Wisdom ) printed out of Taiwan that says: During the last four or five centuries, Buddhism has suffered from colonialism in many Asian countries... This same Buddhist text says we as Buddhists are allowed to check, investigate, and asked questions. And this is why I left Christianity and became a Buddhist because Christianity do not allow checking, investigating and questioning. And in Samantabhra Bodhisattva vows and conduct he mentioned race, color, and clan. And I hear what you saying about gold paint peeled off statues of Buddhist images and look black. But I also have old Artifacts art work of Amitabha Buddha in his Pure Land being Black and the Bodhisattvas and all beings being Black in the Pure Land of Amitabha! And if you go googled that giant Vairocana Buddha statue in Japan it will tell you that statue was erected in 752 A.D And I'm aware of Buddhas & Bodhisattvas has transformation powers, but even with that said,it just seems like to me at one time in Buddhist history all the Buddhist images had one color. And I know and everyone should know what comes with colonialism! And I'll just end the topic right there. Thanks for your sincere response once again! Amitabha🙏🙏🙏
