    Thanks Tony. I have just had a wild life pond installed in my garden and have a rockery near the pond. Your video has given me inspiration to build a hibernaculum. God bless

    Wonderful! I was looking for some advice on how to create a hibernaculum in our garden and this is brilliant. Thank you so much. We are in mid-winter now but I shall start building and hope that next year "they will come", (Field of Dreams?". We have a very small garden but we have a wildlife pond and fruit trees, chickens and a greenhouse, raised beds for herbs and seasonal veg, flowers and shrubs for pure delight, and as many plants for wildlife as we can cram in. Now we will have a hibernaculum too! Yay! Thanks so much!

    About 15 years ago I cut down about 50 conifers and stacked the trunks against a hedge. Over time I have seen all sorts of activity and tracks and burrows at it so you should have good luck with such a variety of environments in your hibernaculum.

      I'm doing grand thanks Tony, going to try to do a couple of videos this week but I'm really busy clearing my mother's house. She went into a residential home on Friday so we are going to do the house up if we decide to sell it. Keeps my mind off other things.

    I have seen bug hotels before. I reckon you should call this one the Park Lane Hilton! Another wonderful project from Tony the master builder! Great advice and excellent video mate. Well done!

    Thank you so very much. We just moved into a house with a stream behind it and I was trying to think what I could do to help out the wetland wildlife. This is exactly the kind of thing I was looking for!
    I'm also thinking of adding a low, flat stone wall and wood pile that will have lots of warm nooks for animals, insects, amphibians and reptiles when it's warmer. Thanks again!

    Fantastic. I'm an MSc Ecology and Conservation student and found this really useful. One thing I was wondering about though, have you had any problem with 'pests'? Rats and Mice etc? I was wondering whether they would take advantage on your structure? Thanks. Tony

    Wow Tony you don't do things by halves. It's fantastic and I'm sure it'll be a great addition to your plot. What will you plant on top? Wild flowers? Best wishes, Kay

    wouldn't the pallets decompose ? if yes, won't the hybernaculum collapse ?

    • @justdefacts
      @justdefacts 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm wondering the same. Would like to build one but not sure whether or not to go ahead using a pallet if it doesn't do a long term job.

    • @wallyjumblatt
      @wallyjumblatt 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@justdefacts Strategically placed house bricks throughout could prolong its life. In the absence of space (and pallets) I'm working on one made of broken paving flags separated by bricks on three levels, but containing all the same bits and pieces as Tony's project. It'll be adjacent to a wildlife pond and a three foot high pile of logs and prunings over which ivy is being trained.

    I’m making a Hibernaculum for snakes and my neighbors have no idea what I’m doing they just think I’m nuts.

      lol Sorry for the late reply. had some issues with comments not showing that they had not been answered, so I am getting through them

  • @staling2010
    @staling2010 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I appreciate the effort it took you to make that, I’m sure there’s a bigger picture that I’m not getting since I do not have a garden, never mind an allotment. Bit doesn’t it make better sense to have a wormery? Besides pests like rats, aren’t snakes a problem/fear? I guess if you’ve got snakes, you won’t have rats. But still...

    • @simplifygardening
      @simplifygardening  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is for things like toads frogs and newts to hibernate in, these are good for the garden as they control other pests such as slugs. Never have an issue with rats in them and the only snake we have here that could deal with rats is the adder and i have never seen one in the wild even though i have not gone looking for them

    Here in the United States in the south I would be afraid of making my hibernaculum too appealing for snakes.
