    I love these little sacrificial meters. You can use them for all sorts of random testing where you wouldn't want to risk an expensive meter. For most people it would be more than adequate as most people only need a rough voltage test, certainly not at HP or Datron 6/7 digit accuracy.

      @@maks886 there are many times you need 3 meters and you can use these cheap things for anything that doesn't need accuracy or robustness. They are useful to throw in the car and forget about them, they are the sort of meter you don't care if it lives or dies. Would I leave any of my flukes in the car just in case? No. Would I care if I dropped it off the roof of a house while measuring voltage on a feed cable to an antenna amp? No... They have so many uses.

    There are different variants of the 630B. Some of them have beeper, others don't. I have examples of both. I suspect they just omit the piezo buzzer and maybe a couple of passives from the ones that don't. I'll have to take the buzzer one apart - possible it has an off-board oscillator to handle the beep as the tone wasn't all that consistent as I recall.
    These meters are perfectly good for basic tasks. Seem pretty reliable as well. These originally had a chip in them from one of the big American manufacturers but I suspect they've cloned it for the cheapo blob-chip copies. These were sold by Maplin under the Mastech brand for a long time.

    Readings in diode mode may be different due to different measurment currents. These meters have been quite decent many years ago. After several rounds of cost cutting only the basic function of the ICL7106 clone IC remained. However, these ICs can be incredible accurate if the reference voltage is set right. 50Hz signals are on the LCD display driver lines.

    I once considered using one of these as my bench multimeter (by mounting it on a stand and powering it from a PSU) only because these are so simple they don't have auto power off function. The other option is getting a fancy multimeter, where the auto power off can be disabled. There is a third option: use a square wave oscillator to press a useless button on a midrange multimeter which will no longer turn itself off. The oscillator circuit can be integrated into the now-empty battery compartment.

    The ubiquitous freebie meter. We've a place here in the states where they were giving those away for a while. I have 4 of them. The really "good" ones have a trimmer pot in them for adjusting them. Over time with revisions they kept getting stripped down more. They can be surprisingly accurate. But alas there's no beeper. Still useful for doing some work.

    I've got that exact same meter only mine is orange! It has suffered some accidental abuse by me several times and is still going strong! My wife bought it for me in MicroCenter quite a few years back, I believe and she only paid about $3 or $4 dollars back then. It's fair enough accurate for me and is one you won't cry about if it goes bye, bye or you lose it accidentally somehow (though I WOULD miss it now 😭😕!) The 9 volt battery operating it seems to last forever too! I think that I have only replaced it once all the years I have it. You really have to get better leads for it though, as the ones you get with it do really suck, but for the price you can't really complain.....👍👍
    PS: The only thing that mine doesn't have either and I wish it had was a buzzer to help check continuity with, but fair enough for the price. It DOES have a fuse though.

    Stocked up on these el-cheapo meters over a decade ago. They have gone up a little in the intervening period. For £2.50 I had a choice of this size or the shirt-pocket size with exactly the same features and a battery which cost £1.75 to replace. Stuff them in an odd corner of the boot of your car and they will get you out of trouble in just the same way as a meter costing 50 times as much. None of them have buzzers - someone copied and pasted that bit from a different meter (probably a different brand) without being able to speak English.

    There are many versions of the DT-830A,B,C,D,E meter some with buzzer some with temp, some without the transistor tester, the description on the back of the box is just for all of them.
    I got 2 or 3 of this crappy meters, I opened all of them and wow they got worse with time, got 1 from around 20 years ago (still works) it has a fuse and trim pots that I used to calibrate it so it was very accurate for a time but after a few years it drifted, got 1 from around 10 years ago, still has a fuse but no more trim pots, now I see they removed everything and it's a real garbage tear meter, got a good UNI T UT139c meter and the same Aneng meter, using those 2 almost daily, great meters, wanted to buy a Fluke meter but it's too expensive for my amateur skills and use.

    It's really interesting , though . The box comes with it looks like a 2000s version while the meter itself is an up-to-date version . Anyway this paticular type 830B was the embranchment of the original Japan 830 which was popular in the 1990s , the Chinese engineers had made it into a series . You can find the model DT830 with different suffex such as B\C\D\E\F on the internet and each suffix represents some paticular functions , say , continuity beeper or temprature measurement . This 830B in the video is the very basic model among the modern 830 series .

Back in the 90's there was even a exact same model but with a build in flashlight on top. Because these are so cheap, i have seen people use these in DIY powersupplies as panelmeters.

    The pressure fit of the display connector to the board is a weak point. Mine started to fail in displaying digits. I found that putting a piece of foam sponge inside where it would squeeze the connectors more firmly together solved the problem (for now). This one has continuity marked on the diode tester & does buzz. It cost about 5 euros from a large electronics supplier.

    I actually have the DT832 here and it has the fuses and beeper and looks the same. as my understanding it is not really a true part number but more like a common "model name" thing used for cheap multimeters, just search it and you gonna find all kinds of cheap multimeters. But There is one thing I especially like with these cheap meters, They have no stupid Auto Off function. If I wanna have my multimeter on with my rechargeable battery until it dies it´s my call. The UniT meters are just bothering with their off function. if you sit for many hours and work you don´t wanna hear it beep because it soon gonna turn off while pausing the measurement, Then 2 minutes later it beeps again and turn off, you turn it on and it beeps again because why not, Then the same all over again a few minutes later, it drives me crazy in the end. I mean who came up with that concept? if it has a sign with auto off just have a silent off or just one short beep when it does so and no more.

  • @yambo59
    @yambo59 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The reason it doesnt (BEEP) is because as you failed to notice there is no continuity range in the meter - they never updated the packaging after the cut costs to the bone and removed the continuity range some time ago, I have some like this is well, essentially the packaging is incorrect --- there used to be some of these that had a continuity beep but I havent seen one in a long time - they make them cheaper and cheaper all the time in fact they removed the fuse in them and if they do have a fuse its soldered in and not replaceable or there is a surface mount device to replace it. There also used to be a backlight in some of them but its gone too - theyre are also a very dangerous meter, if you move the range switch while plugged into AC the meter will blow up in your hand most likely - really they are throw away junk and shouldnt even be on the market anymore - The best purpose they served is to make you want to buy a better meter when they fail or blow up in your hand.

    I had bought it to use it in a pinch so.. out of the box it was measuring around 40ohm on ohm scale (beeper worked ) so to fix it i set it to AC volts range and pluged it directly to mains 240v . after some pop and some smoke it measured right. Moral of the story, with 40ohms on volts range it might definetly kill if one probe was touching the live wire and other in hand. Other than that great for the price for low voltage beginners stuff..

    I was surprised how accurate it is. The voltage was dead on. Then I tried the continuity buzzer hack, which ruined that. Thankfully removing the buzzer restored its capability. One side note, the dual indicator is difficult to see in darker areas. Enhancing the arrow with white paint or spelling correction fluid makes it much easier to ensure the dial is not 180 degrees out from the intended setting, which could be devastating.

    Hundreds of makers of that meter type, of various quality and function, all with the same part number. Some have the fuse, some have the beeper, all roughly use a near identical PCB, with the blob containing a clone of the !CL7106 DMM on it. The manual is all the same poorly copied one, with all the specs for the lot, just your version can be missing parts depending on how they cut cost making them.
    Often cheaper than the battery, and i have had a few knock around in the tool box as a quick and dirty meter to use for things like check a cable is intact, or a wall wart provides around the right voltage, and if the cable is broken. Just treat the meter as a reasonable one for use around 12V, with somewhat useful resistance, and diode test will tell you if working or not. Current is more or less, just remember 30s max on the 10A range, and the other range short circuit protection is by the PCB burning out. AC voltage is just there to provide 2 extra ranges, it is not accurate at all, just can tell you if there is AC or not, and a rough level, because it can flash over in use. No CAT rating, so nothing over 50VDC or AC, and the provided probes might contain metal, and will fail after a few hundred cycles.

I have compared 8 Fluke meters in the 87 line and with a an input of 5.000 volts all except one read 5.000 volts. The odd unit read 5.001 volts. Other readings were similarly dead on. The oldest was 20 years old and the newest was about a year old. None were ever calibrated since they left the factory. With a fluke you can bet your bottom dollar the reading will be accurate. There is one thing I didn't know I am missing while using a similar type of multimeter - auto-ranging. The need to switch between ranges can cause misdiagnosis. In electronics repair, while probing circuits, you can go from milliohms to megaohms with one change of the probe placement.

    • @johncoops6897
      @johncoops6897 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You don't need an oscilloscope to see a change in voltage, but you won't properly see a change if the multimeter needs to auto-range.
      Also for repetitive tasks, auto-ranging makes things heaps slower. It takes many seconds to take each measurement if the meter has to adjust range each time.
