I haven't had any issues other than occasionally having to reset it when it doesn't want to connect to my phone via WiFi but that's pretty rare. I'll say the WiFi is really strong so sometimes it connects to your phones audio even when you're really far from the car still lol.. not really an "issue" though. Just something to be aware of.
I just completed this installation in my 2014 F10 M5 CP on 10/10/2020. These points are only to help others troubleshoot. It overall was well instructed and it wasn't all that difficult. Some steps are missing in the video but no big deal. I was able to pull the dash apart, configure the unit and determine where to best place the component and wiring. The video doesn't show the connection to the head unit very well but it isn't a big deal and easy to figure out. I would call out special attention to the green fiber optic connection and the blue wire harness to the head unit and air con control panel. Upon initial completion after maybe 45 minutes, there was no power to the head unit. The display screen worked, the Multi CD player in the glove box had power, but no response. I tore the dash apart again and stepped through the install process from the start. I eliminated points of failure by reconnecting the battery after each step. I found the fiber optic cable connection wasn't seated properly and removed it from the new harness and reseated it. The wire harness clip need some effort to plug in properly to the back of the head unit after reseating the fiber optics. The locking arm on the harness is not that great in my opinion. I then connected the head unit control and air conditioning panel where I had intermittent power. This was the main issue. The blue harness clip is terrible. As I moved the control panel, it would power off and on. I left the battery connected as I played with the panel until I was able to reseat the panel with the power steady. It took me 30 minutes to get the right combination of movement and seating to get it to work consistently. This is not a Bimmertech issue. After retracing all my steps, disassembling the interior a couple times after 3.5 hours I was done and working. Had I known what the issues were, I could have easily resolved and completed this in less than 2 hours. Had I not encountered the issues, I think 1 hour is all you need and it is pretty straight forward. Now that I have tested the connection, I look forward to enjoying Carplay on my F10. It is a pretty slick solution.
Thanks a lot for sharing that! We're very glad you didn't encounter any major issues during the installation and we'll look into the harness problems. If you have any questions or issues in the future, we'll be happy to help, so do not hesitate to contact us. Hope you enjoy your CarPlay :)
Thank you very much. These instructions are very clear and easy to follow and exactly what I was looking for. I was a bit nervous about fitting this but it really doesn't look too bad. This is my project for next Saturday.
Useful video, thanks! Just FYI, on the F10, I think the space you have available may be limited depending on what audio system you have. "just tucking away the cables" took me longer than the entire rest of the install combined, as my headunit is 180mm deep and the space I had behind (right hand drive 2015 F10 535 with Harmon kardon system") was 200mm, so no way in hell it was going anywhere easily. Took a lot of fiddling around to get the bulky plug connector out of the way to the side of the headunit so the unit would go in. Also, had very limited space and couldn't tuck the box away where you did (albeit on the left hand side, as mines a right hand drive car). Ended up taking out the glovebox and fixing the box with cable ties to the main bulkhead chassis tube , just beneath the airbag unit.
This is the best video I’ve ever watched, you explained it in such a detailed and simple way. Thank you so, so much! It’s been 4 years, but I just ordered it now and thanks to this video, I’ll hopefully be able to do it. You’re amazing, I wish you continued success. Even though I don’t know English, I almost understood everything you were saying. ☺️
Update to my installation review. This upgrade is awesome. A couple minor glitches here and there when first starting some apps and from time to time then entering the system it froze but that has seemed to have calmed down. The sound reproduction from the wireless connection to me iPhone is impressive. The EQ helps the factory stereo sound much better. Once you get comfortable navigating the iDrive with the system, it is very intuitive. This was a great update to older model car. Really glad I did this.
It's neat but the plug is a bit fat and it makes the lower part look slightly like it's angled a bit lower on the side where I've jammed the USB socket in. Since I'm not likely to need to use that, I may move it but I'm so relieved everything went smoothly that I may just leave it.
I just got a 2013 535 xi M Sport! Loving everything about but connectivity. This kit for Car Play is hot! How must is this for my ride? Also, I’m looking to upgrade to Alpha One speakers. Let me know!! Thanks, Bimmertech!
Hi! The CarPlay kit is probably compatible with your 535, but it's going to depend on a few details of your vehicle's hardware. You can check here: www.bimmer-tech.net/category-bmw-carplay-mmi-retrofit Just identify your car by its VIN to confirm compatibility and see optional extras and pricing. Thanks!
We currently do not have a video for an E60. The procedure is similar to our E90 CIC Prime video or the F10 CIC Prime video which you can find on our channel.
Thank you very much for these instructions. Fortunately, this is exactly the car I have (F10 M5) which was handy. They were clear and I followed them with only one issue which was totally my own fault. Everything worked fine except when I was trying to find space to fit the MMI. There just didn't seem to be room on the right hand side where it showed in the video. I was a bit dismayed until I realised I'm English so my car is RHD. Once I looked on the left hand side (ie mirror image from your LHD car) there was plenty of room with a bit of gentle jiggling. It took me about an hour to complete. I'm sure I could do this in half the time now I know what I'm doing but it was pretty simple and the instructions seemed to cover everything I needed to know. I haven't tried all the functionality yet but both wired and wireless CarPlay seem to work fine. I have only just bought my iPhone 12 Pro and I was going to look for a windscreen mount but now I have wireless CarPlay, I probably don't need one, which is a bonus.
Thank you for the kind words! And very glad you made it :)) Remember that if anything you can call/write to our support team. They'll help you out with any issue.
Question, do you have to use the USB adapter? Does your system disable the USB and other connections in the armrest storage compartment? 2014 BMW F10 550I xdrive M Sport
No, It has its own USB port where you can connect your phone for Android Auto or Carplay, or play music/videos from your USB stick. This port is separate from the car's OEM USB socket.
When you tuck away the MMI controller like that in a random place without securing it, isn't this going to cause annoying rattling sounds when you're driving on bad roads? This is really surprising me of most of the installation videos I am seeing on TH-cam for this controller....
Placing the MMI in a spot similar to the one in the video should not cause any rattling sounds when driving on bad roads, even if it is just tucked away like in the video. The spot shown in the video is tight enough so that the MMI doesn't move. However, if you prefer securing it even more, you can use tape, adhesive strips, etc. to stick it to the center console.

What the hell am I missing. Tried to do a Factory Reset - Wants a Passcode...wtf!!
It sounds a lot of like you have not switched the audio source to AUX within the iDrive. Our MMIs require you to be in AUX in order to pass through any sound coming from the CarPlay. As for the Passcode issue, I am not sure what passcode we are talking about, please send our support team a picture showing the issue.
It sounds a lot like you are using an iPhone and are still paired with the OEM iDrive Bluetooth. Please head over to the Bluetooth settings on your phone and delete BMWXXXXX device from the list of paired devices. From then on make sure you have AUX selected in your iDrive as the sound input.
Hi! CarPlay works on the OEM screen, so no additional display will be included. In terms of reverse camera, it will be included if you add it as an option to your kit.
It is not possible to have audio from the iDrive’s radio and the MMI simultaneously, although you can use any radio apps with the MMI to enjoy your favorite radio stations while using CarPlay.
It should work. Do you switch to AUX every time you want to use the mic? It might also happen due to a wrong bluetooth pairing with CarPlay and phone. Please reach out to our support team, they'll for sure help you with that issue: www.bimmer-tech.net/page-contact
The USB connection is there for you only to charge your iPhone, play videos and music from a thumb drive or do software updates. Apart from that it's all wireless. After pairing your iPhone and CarPlay once, the MMI will recognize your phone each time you get in your car and connect wirelessly.
Hi, I’m wondering is any option to get sound from original Bluetooth connection with car? Aux with equaliser is fine but I can’t swap songs by steering wheel.. any solution? Thanks ;)
Hi, i installed the same. But i have and issue. Everytime i get s text message (whatsapp) the bluetooth connection switches to carplay. So the music stops everytime. If i try to use whatsapp nothing happens and the connection switches. Do you anything about that?

Hi! I assume you mean aftermarket cameras? In that case, in theory, yes. Our own cameras are compatible, and cameras from other brands will probably also work depending on what connection they have. In either case, it's possible you'll need a little extra hardware from us, depending on your vehicle, so your best bet is to get in touch with our team at info@bimmer-tech.net and give your VIN and technician information about the cameras. The kit is compatible with BMW factory original park assist cameras, too, without any additional hardware. Thanks!

Please check the connectors on the back of the IHKA (A/C) panel. If you can wiggle them, they have not been inserted all the way. The correct way to reconnect them is by releasing them all the way in, pushing them into their spots as far as possible and only then latching with the handle.

Hey guys. I want this CarPlay prime but also want to be able to connect a hdmi device into my screen. Am I able to do this? If not what options do I have? I’d like CarPlay, AirPlay and HDMI. What I’m trying to do is install a PS4 into my 428i F33 convertible lol
Hi! Definitely sounds like an interesting project ;) Our CarPlay MMI Prime doesn't have an HDMI port. Our SmartView HD doesn't include CarPlay, but does support AirPlay. The multimedia interface included in that kit varies depending on your vehicle's exact hardware, but in some cases has a spare HDMI port that you could use to rig up the PS4. Your best bet is to send us your VIN at info@bimmer-tech.net and one of our team will be able to help you figure out exactly what we can offer for your 428i. Thanks!
You could (hypothetically) use the rear view camera interface (seems to be a standard RCA cable) to connect a PS4 , but I'm unsure if you could have the audio through the line in being played at the same time as the Rear Camera (PS4 in this case) is showing on the screen. If you happen to try it, let us know how it went

Do i need to change the screen to or can i use the original screen ? My f10 is a 2013
You can use your original screen.
does the backup camera plug straight in to the MMI for the carplay or do you need the MMI for the backup camera as well.
It hooks right up to the same MMI for CarPlay! You don't need any additional hardware.

Why doesnt this show the mic install or the aux plug???
All of the information on mic and aux plug install are included in the installation guide we send when you purchase the product.
Hi! its posible to mount this kit if car has rear monitors and 360degrees cameras?
Cameras do no harm :) If your BMW is compatible with CarPlay MMI Prime you can go for an upgrade.
Can you do this on a 2011 F10 220d se ? Many thanks
Most likely :) Enter your VIN here and you'll see whether you're 100% compatible: www.bimmer-tech.net/category-bmw-carplay-mmi-retrofit
Quick question
In my bmw f30 2013 I was going to install a mmi box but not I also want to install a 10.25” android screen would I still be able to install the mmi
Hi, our MMI will work only with OEM screens.
@@bimmer-tech so if i install a oem 8.8" screen would i be able to still install the mmi box
@@user-gn1hk5fx8u The MMI compatibility will depend on your VIN. Please send us the last 7 digits of your VIN and we'll check if you can install both.
Will my front and 360 camera work after this install?
Yes it will.
do you need to have your iPhone connected through USB all the time or only once when you enable the Apple CarPlay?
Hi, only once when you enable it. Our CarPlay is wireless for iPhones.
@@bimmer-tech thank you! also I have combobox and I don't care about using Siri, voice commands or initiate calls through apple carplay, can I not route the cable to the roof microphone and use the car bluetooth system for calls?
@@Pseudoaaajdhdhdhdhd Currently it is not possible to connect to two Bluetooth devices at the same time with an iPhone device, so essentially this would not work.
Just tried installing it but the screen is coming up as blank. Nothing is happening. Tried removing all MMI cables and reverted to the original, it still isn’t coming on. Both the screen and head unit feel warm when touching them. Any ideas?
Please contact our support team at support@bimmer-tech.net, provide them the VIN of your car and they’ll do their best to help you.
Installed everything, per this video, in my F10 550i. The most detailed video I found so far. Everything works perfect on the OEM side-sound, iDrive, Nav, all work. When I switch to the Android side, I'm not getting any sound on anything. All of the apps work: Waze, Google Maps, VLC, I can see a video trailer however, I still get no sound on anything.
I installed the CarPlay but I cannot stream music if my Bluetooth is connected to the CarPlay. I have to select the bmw to play music please help
@@bimmer-tech fixed thank you
does this package come with the screen when i order it? and also a reverse camera? for my f10
Hi! CarPlay works on the OEM screen, so no additional display will be included. In terms of reverse camera, it will be included if you add it as an option to your kit.
No screen, you have an option to buy the backup camera. That option is pretty expensive
Can you still listen to your radio whilst CarPlay is active?
It is not possible to have audio from the iDrive’s radio and the MMI simultaneously, although you can use any radio apps with the MMI to enjoy your favorite radio stations while using CarPlay.
What if the cars microphone doesn't work in carplay?
It should work. Do you switch to AUX every time you want to use the mic? It might also happen due to a wrong bluetooth pairing with CarPlay and phone. Please reach out to our support team, they'll for sure help you with that issue: www.bimmer-tech.net/page-contact
So ff there is a USB connection, is it truly Wireless? Or does my phone need to be connected to the setup at all times to use this retrofit?
The USB connection is there for you only to charge your iPhone, play videos and music from a thumb drive or do software updates. Apart from that it's all wireless. After pairing your iPhone and CarPlay once, the MMI will recognize your phone each time you get in your car and connect wirelessly.
Hi, I’m wondering is any option to get sound from original Bluetooth connection with car?
Aux with equaliser is fine but I can’t swap songs by steering wheel.. any solution? Thanks ;)
Unfortunately it is not possible for CarPlay MMI Prime to work via Bluetooth. There is nothing we can do about the steering wheel controls for now.
@@bimmer-tech Thanks for your replay!
Does this retain the use of the factory backup camera?
Yes, it does.
yes
Hi, i installed the same. But i have and issue. Everytime i get s text message (whatsapp) the bluetooth connection switches to carplay. So the music stops everytime. If i try to use whatsapp nothing happens and the connection switches. Do you anything about that?
Please contact our support at support@bimmer-tech.net and provide them with the order number and the last 7 characters of the car’s VIN. They’ll help you troubleshoot the issue.
Does this allow you to use existing front and rear cameras?
Thanks!
yes
Where can i buy a relatively cheap unit in the UK?
We ship all over the world free of charge, so you can buy it on our website.
I wish someone in sweden could do this?
We can deliver it to Sweden if you like :D
Does this make it impossible to code the car with a OBD dongle, like other kits do?
With the latest software that we load to the MMI's before shipping there are absolutely no such problems.
Do I need android Display or I can use original one.My car is F10. 245 hp,2010 ,530D - CIC
What do you mean by Android display? Our CarPlay MMI Prime works on cars with CIC with their original display.
@@bimmer-tech Ok.Thanks.
Just installed this on my F10 M5 and have had ‘battery discharging while stationary’ issues since. Just had it checked by BMW and when they unplug this device the amp draw goes from 2.5amps to just 0.4amps and no more battery while stationary warnings.

It certainly won't fix it and also we can't guarantee CarPlay MMI Prime would work with a faulty module.

I put the CarPlay in but now my ac is not blowing air anywhere anything to help?
Please check the connectors on the back of the IHKA (A/C) panel. If you can wiggle them, they have not been inserted all the way. The correct way to reconnect them is by releasing them all the way in, pushing them into their spots as far as possible and only then latching with the handle.
Hi, I installed and connected everything and CarPlay began to work, and everything else in the car works, except for the A/C. Any thing I may have done wrong? Any way to fix it?

@@bimmer-tech . See my review today. The blue harness clip to the AC panel and Headunit is very finnicky. I had intermittent power and when I reassembled the car and connected the battery, I had the same issue. Once I played with that harness clip I was finally able to keep power to it with the battery connected as I pushed in the clips and screwed the control panel down.

Great video and tutorial.
Will you still be able to update iDrive software and do coding/ modifications via bimmercode?
Of course.

Does this have wireless CarPlay and wireless Android auto ?
It sure does! Wireless Android Auto requires a compatible phone though as not all Android phones support wireless.
