    do the trains sometimes have to stop at red traffic signals? (at otherwise normal road junctions)

    • @Ferrocarril_Chicago
      @Ferrocarril_Chicago  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes they do.

    • @albertcarello619

      @Vitytransportinfoplus: Yes they do. They don't always have traffic signal priority.

    To me it looks kinda eerie, like a bunch of rhinos racing on a track in the road, with you chasing it. The trains look so huge up close lol
    edit: Imagine if the train on the road had to stop at a red light (not that it would) but you would just walk along the road crossing and see a train next to all the cars lol

    • @Ferrocarril_Chicago
      @Ferrocarril_Chicago  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These are suburban commuter trains, so they are a pretty good size. Each coach is like 85 feet long. Both commuter and freight trains run down these streets. And funny you should bring up the whole red light thing because when the trains are street running on the South Shore, they are required to obey the traffic lights that are obeyed by automobiles in addition to railroad signals. It's very cool how that all works!

    Is this in Indiana?

    • @Ferrocarril_Chicago
      @Ferrocarril_Chicago  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Specifically, Michigan City Indiana. If you can, go see it before it's all double track. Once it's double track, the tracks will no longer be under the pavement.

    Does the engineer have to stand? I can't imagine what they'd do with his seat when passengers use his door.

    • @Ferrocarril_Chicago
      @Ferrocarril_Chicago  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No, the engineer has his/her own seat that comes down out of a hatch door in the vestibule. The lead vestibule on the lead car is blocked off and not in boarding use. Each control car that is not leading, the controls and operating gadgets are locked up behind like a cabinet door in the vestibule. The Bi-Level cars though are different because they have a secluded cab on the lead end of each car on the upper level. The crews love the Bi-Level cars for operating because of the more comfortable cab, but much prefer the Single-Level cars because they're much easier to troubleshoot whenever issues arise.

      They have seats that come down and the front part is blocked off. On cars that aren’t lead cars but have head cabs the operating cab seat goes up and the door is openable so people can walk through the heads.
      The bilevel cars have the control cab on the upper deck

      An engineer I talked with at NICTD, the way he described it is that when it comes to operating, the Bi-Level cars are Cadillacs compared to the Single-Level cars. On the other hand when it comes to maintenance and troubleshooting, the Single-Levels are much less complicated to work with.

      Metra MP36 407 understandable as they are larger and heavier. Well, I guess Metra is very used to that as they operate all bilevel cars, although most are not electric and don’t have traction motors that need servicing.
      But at the same time, the older South Shore single level cars use DC motors which will require replacing motor brushes every couple years of use. But most of the other cars that are newer including the Highliner use AC motors which don’t have brushes to replace. But there’s still mechanics to maintain and inspect

    Hey when could I see a South Shore freight in Dune Park?

    • @Ferrocarril_Chicago
      @Ferrocarril_Chicago  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not sure when they normally pass through. It's like random it seems. I know there's one that usually runs between the BRC and Burnham yard around rush hour.

    • @Ferrocarril_Chicago
      @Ferrocarril_Chicago  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They're the same exact cars as the Metra Electric cars. The only difference other than the fact that these are in South Shore paint are that they have side entrance doors into the rear vestibule and they do not have the rubber buffers on each end of the car body whereas the Metra ones do.

    • @MetraTitanicWTC

      Interesting, anyways that a cool train

    • @Ferrocarril_Chicago
      @Ferrocarril_Chicago  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Were you at all even somewhat familiar with the South Shore Line before viewing this video? Just curious.

    • @MetraTitanicWTC
      @MetraTitanicWTC 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nah not really

    • @Ferrocarril_Chicago
      @Ferrocarril_Chicago  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, if you like Metra, then you'll also really like the South Shore. The South Shore is a one of a kind railroad with a lot of fascinating history behind it! And this day in age, it is very much associated with Metra. On the Illinois side of the state line, the South Shore is governed and partially owned and operated by Metra. The rest of it is NICTD (Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District). Trust me, you like Metra, you'll be very fascinated with the South Shore as well!
