Thank you Linda for sharing your Moms recipe. You are so neat when you cook....I’m a hot mess.😂. I’ve never made baked beans and my husband loves them...I’ll be using your recipe. I just love the window you chose above your kitchen sink. Brings the outdoors in. Sugarwood is so lucky that you found her, everything inside and out looks so lovely. You are an inspiration as always. Happy Autumn 🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁
I have got to say your channel is still one of my absolute favourites, I have followed you for many years now and you are the one who inspired me to start my own channel, don’t ever change 🥰
Wow, thank you and good for you!
That view out of your kitchen window!❤
What is better than home cooking in the autumn? I am anxious to see the Baked Bean finale'. Save me some for next Sunday.🍲❤
Definitely!!
Soup weather, pasta and other comfort foods
Thank you, Linda! I love all your videos and especially how you’ve decorated your home! 🍁
When beans are cooked in hard water the magnesium and calcium bond with the cell walls. This hardens the beans and dramatically increases the cooking time. New Hampshire water is considered soft.
Great video Linda! ❤️
Thank you for the information. This makes so much sense, moved to a new area of the country in 2019. Enjoy making 7 bean soup, first winter here made the soup. It was like I hadn't even cooked the beans!
Thanks. Here in the Tampa, FL area, our water is absolutely awful -- hard as nails. And I don't have a water softener. Once a month I have to bust out toilet bowl cleaner and use it to get rid of the calcium and lime around bathroom and kitchen fixtures. I throw a small scoop of Borax into the wash when I do laundry to soften the water.
Those beans look like they were delicious 😁. You have been one busy bee ☺️. Have a good night!
Buzz buzz! Very busy for sure!
The blazer is fabulous and it looks great on you! Perfect for fall, so classic.🍁There’s nothing like a beautiful wool blazer! Much affection from the city of Detroit! 🍂
Had a memory from the olden days when we had to call a number on the phone for the correct time. 😊
I love that the community came out to raise money for the meeting house. That's how the country should work. Come together and take care of our own without government intervention (aka getting their hands on tax dollars)! Kudos to them!
Love the variety of your videos and the many aspects of New England. I loved it when we visited a few years ago.
My husband said the same thing about calling on the phone for the time. I completely forgot about that!
My mom used to make beans using the ingredients that you are using . She soaked them overnight, mixed ‘em all up, baked them and they were delicious. Good for you for using the old ways. Hope your family loves them as much as we did! Miss those days.
Thank you!
Linda, Thank you so much for sharing your Mom's recipe with us. I have always wanted a good recipe for baked beans. I just love your kitchen. I know you worked very hard putting the kitchen and dinning area together. Everything has turned out gorgeous!
Seeing the fog through that beam from your flashlight was a wonder. With the moon and star hanging in the sky it felt like a scene from Sleepy Hollow. Loved it! Thanks!
Thank you! I did enjoy the moment.
Your simple remarkable! It's nice to see classy design again. Everything you do is so tasteful and well curated! New to the channel but watching all the videos!
We toured all of the New England states this past week…and wow! So much to see! New Hampshire was my favorite. Oh! The colors, the views! 😍 We clicked “avoid highways” on the GPS and began our journey. It was a dream come true. From what I understand, it will get even more beautiful in a week or so. I can’t even imagine!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Yes, in a week or so it will be bursting with color. Some areas are passing now though.
Ahh the memories! I’m a Vermonter and my mother used maple syrup in her baked beans . A pot of baked beans in the oven and fresh bread rising on the cast-iron heat radiators every Saturday …delicious smells! I’m 87 years old so it’s been a long time. Thanks for bringing those memories back.
I am going to try maple syrup one time soon! I am looking forward to comparing the taste difference, if any.
I grew up in PA and so did my mom
Hi Linda. I think the reason that you want to cook legumes with soft water is that hard water contains things like calcium and magnesium, and they tend to make the shell of legumes or beans unable to soften and cook well. I have no idea if my water is hard or soft, but I’ve cooked beans before and they turned out just fine! Thank you so much for this nice recipe…it reminded me of how really easy it is to cook beans, and how once you have homemade beans, you really don’t want to eat canned beans anymore! My hubby and I took a ride today, through Dublin, Hancock, and Peterborough and we are just so happy to see all of the beautiful, red, orange and yellow foliage. I always tell him that we don’t have to go leaf peeping because we live right in leaf peeping land! Thank you again for another great video and looking forward to next Sunday, of course. 🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁
Love Baked Beans.TBeans.The view with the fog outside was gorgeous.
Love your life 😍 it's so special. Thank you for sharing , once again you never disappoint and make me feel so warm and relaxed, thank you xx
Thank you so much!
So love getting up early, and having coffee with you and seeing a bit of New England, Thank you for sharing.....Have a great day. Can't wait to try the Boston Baked Beans.
Loved everything as usual! You look so classy in your beautiful jacket-what a great find! Your videos bring me so much joy; thank you for that! ❤
By the sounds of it , you are well on your way to building the Linda Davis online empire , this year has seen many changes in your life and want to wish you a mountain of success in all your ventures and say.a massive Thank you for sharing your journey with us your viewing public . Well done !! Hard work is paying off .
Wow, thank you!
I have one of those bean pots, Linda, and made Boston Bakes Beans for my 84 year old parents twice this Summer. I had bought some pulled pork from a Mennonite butcher shop so thought they would be perfect with the pork....and they were! I so enjoy using this old school, clay pot and cannot wait to make them again this winter in my wood cook stove. Thank you for showing us your new purchases and really enjoyed taking us along on your excursions!
That is awesome!
I was just mesmerized from start to finish. This was such an amazing video, Linda. I may try the baked beans. Have a lovely day.☀️👏🏻💛
Thank you! You too!
Another great vlog. I love that you don't edit your bloopers out!
Thank you Linda for sharing your mother's recipe..I love to cook but there is something about cooking in the fall and winter that I just love so much..I always enjoy everything you share with us..Have a wonderful evening and thank you..
Noone makes baked beans from scratch anymore. What a wonderful video to share because I will most likely never see this in person. Thank you Linda🙏
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Linda, I love when you cook simple old recipes!! I can taste the bacon. I'm on vacation in Milan for a few days, but I still had to check for your video! So happy to watch your video!!
I love the early morning moments!
You are perfectly attuned to life and nature.
I agree...and to say "easily distracted" as Linda describes herself, well it's really that she is very sensorially aware of her environment and sensitive to all around her. It can be challenging at times, I understand, but this is what makes her so fantastic!!!
Baked Beans! Definitely New England. More Years ago than I care to remember I was actually a little girl. My mother would by a yellow box that had the dried beans and spices all together in the box. They were the best! As to hard and soft water: We also lived in a house with a well. the best way I can Identify hard water is it seems to take more soap to get clean! Thank you for the recipie Linda!
Those crocks take me back to my childhood! Baked beans and baked apples too....hello fall 🍁
Hard water has natural minerals in it that can leave a more bitter after taste. Soft water means you have a softener system attached to your water system and use bags of filtering granules that contain salt. So, you might need to use seasoning or brown sugar for beans in hard water to improve taste, while with soft water, you would lessen any salt used in recipe. The baking times can differ, as well.
I was taught to add a teaspoon of baking soda to the water when soaking the beans. We’re on a well so we have hard water and a whole house water softener system to cut down on mineral buildup on our fixtures and pipes. I thrifted a large bean pot a few days ago to add to the medium and small pots I have from my parents. TYFS🐦⬛
The beans look amazing! Ohh I bet they were good! Can’t wait for the next video, your videos are always a lovely treat! Thank you for sharing your recipe with us, and I can’t wait to try it.
So good! Thank you!
Thank you Linda. I just received my French bee glasses! I wasn’t sure why they always sold out so quickly until I received them and got to hold them in my hand. They are gorgeous! I can’t wait to use them this weekend for an autumn gathering. Thank you! Ps. They were packaged with your personal touch and boxed in the black boxes you use for your special shipments.
Just lovely!🐝🐝
I'm so glad you love them and that they arrived safe and sound!
I’m certainly enjoying the items I’m receiving from your online shop. Fixed my husband the apple cider pancakes with the maple syrup for breakfast this morning. He loves the apple cider doughnuts so I knew he’d love the pancakes as well. Leftovers went into the freezer for another day.
Glad you like them!
Good morning Linda , all I can say is you’re a woman of all trades. Thank you so much for sharing the recipe of Boston baked beans I love them. Have a blessed weekend and God bless.
You would know if you had hard water because all your taps would cake up with minerals and boiling water would have a scummy foam on top.
Your channel has become my favorite! I enjoy seeing what you're up to and feel like I'm catching up with a friend who shares my interests. Have a wonderful week.
I'm so glad! thank you!
The only thing better than a Baked Bean pottery,is a Dutch oven! Thanks for your recipe
Hi Linda. Love the early mornings as well. The star you see by the moon is actually not a star. It is Venus. Such beauty in your part of the country. Thank you for sharing out of doors.
Hi Linda, Happy October 🍁🍁 The view from your kitchen window is amazing. Your channel has become my favourite by far, I so look forward to watching them, its like catching up with a friend if that makes sense. Have a great rest of the weekend, kind regards Julie from England 🇬🇧
Thank you so much!
Your energy is boundless!
Live ur videos. Very informative. I especially like the cooking and cleaning parts. Plan to try making the beans.
I can’t wait to see what you’re working on in your long dreamed about bedroom💫
It’s mind blowing how much warmth, life and openness you’ve added to your kitchen with the windows.
The addition of your new/antique pieces has made all the difference🔥
I hadn’t envisioned there was enough room, or that they were so needed to add soul and personality.
I wrongly thought only more coloured decor would do that for your light neutral space.
You Sister are a Master⭐️
It now feels like the ideal kitchen, the way it was always meant to be.
Thank you so much for your kind words!
I’m listening to a chipmunk chirp away outside my house while a chipmunk chirps behind you as you’re cutting herbs 😂 chipmunk surround sound!
Love that!
My recipe for baked beans is exactly the same as your mom's. They are delicious. I make them once a year, usually around Easter. Baked in the exact same pot as the bigger one that you have which is a family heirloom. It will eventually be passed down to my daughter. Happy October !
That is awesome!
Love your Mum's recipe Linda!! Thank you so much. I make them a few times a year. Always delicious!! Your mail order is crazy!!! Congratulations!!!
Can’t wait to see next week, and how the beans turned out! ❤ As always, I loved watching this video.
I’ve definitely got to try your recipe. These were a staple at many family events. I know my grandmother made them during the depression when things were tight.
Yum!! My dad used to make homemade beans all the time, I sure miss him! Yours looked delish! ❤
Linda, I just love the way you do things. Your home is beautiful. Your kitchen is awesome. Thank you for your moms recipe. My husband doesn't like baked beans either but I do. I just may have to be making these. Thanks for all you do to inspire us.
Thank you so much and I'm glad I finally made the beans again. Sometimes I do without something I like since I'm a people pleasure and I'm trying to break that habit.
If you have hard water, your beans will never get soft! Love those bean pots and know the baked beans will be delicious!
Thanks for the tip!
Thanks for showing us how to make baked beans. You made it look so easy. I have a crock for beans, I may get brave and try this! 👍
If you do, have fun!
Soft water would be used to reduce the gassyness later. Very smart idea, to use baking soda while soaking your dry legumes.
❤Yummy! My mom did the same type recipe😊 she put bacon strips over the top. Nice Video👍
Hello Linda! Yum!!! A lovely video choice for lunchtime! Happy Fall from Virginia!!! 🍁🍁🍁
Hi Linda, the baked beans look delish and crocks are so nice. I’ll be making these baked beans next weekend, thanks for sharing your mom’s recipe with all of us😍 Wishing you a wonderful week!
Enjoy your baking time!
Good Morning Sweet Linda!! Ahhhh.....I can smell your beautiful Autumn season from here in GA. I am originally from Okla, Baked beans, were made with "Pinto" beans but everything else was pretty much the same as your Boston version...except no onions! We only served them in the summer with all the barbecues goin on. Your towns "Meeting House" was beauatiful! Didn't you have something in the past about that place and you went up in the attic?? Maybe just me 😊As always, ❤from GA!
Very good memory! Yes, I went up to the bell tower.
I watched a documentary last night about highly sensitive people. The way you are attuned to nature, animals, and beauty, I wonder if you are an HSP like I am. Will be trying the yummy bean recipe.
Hi, yes as a neurodivergent person, HSP is I believe pretty common. I always felt it was making up for the other learning disability issues. LOL
Linda you now have me hungry for Boston baked beans ...yes I'll be making some this week thank you...and I have to have hot dogs (on the side) with mine . Lol can't wait. ❤
Have fun!
Hello Linda I heard some day that the soft water will make de beans softer and with the hard water they will be more hard. It is because of the minerals in the water. I do my bean in the slow cooker and they are delicious! Have a great day!
Thank you! Someone asked if the recipe works in a slow cooker and I did not know the answer. good to know. With my memory, I probably used a slow cooker/crock pot when I was newly married and forget LOL
It is interesting you use bacon rather than salt pork as my Canadian Mother-in Law used to do. Hers were the very first homemade baked beans I ever tasted. They were fabulous with baked fresh bread and her homemade coleslaw 😊!
Usually do use salt pork. I didn't have any. It is so good with bacon too. I've done both.
I love, love love your kitchen and dining room!❤
Thank you!! 😊
Did I miss it? You have two bean pots on your counter....which size accomodated your recipe? Also oven temperature? My beans are simmering......I love your TH-cam and look forward to them every week. You are such a talented and creative graceful inspiration in all that you do and share. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful light with us ❤
Soaking your beans in soft water makes their skins softer, cooking in hard water makes the skins tougher. If you don't have a water softener just add baking soda to the water, it takes all those hard minerals out of your water and helps in keeping the skins from being tough.
Thank you!
This is how m mom makes baked beans. Love them so much. Tfs.
I made real baked beans for a July 4th meal once, but I made a Tex-Mex version with wet ingredients. I was wondering what you were going to do with the onion and when you opened it up on the top, it was beautiful! I was gifted a variety of dry beans and I think I may try your recipe this fall. Thanks for sharing your New England home and life with us.
We have had hummers all summer. Leaving the feeder up for a couple more weeks just in case of stragglers. So fun to watch them.
I discovered you a few months ago while searching for Butler's Pantry ideas. I found the episode where you were winding the clock first then I binged watched! I'm hooked; I subscribed! I can't wait to try the bean recipe. I just ordered a stoneware bean pot. What temperature did you bake them for 5-6 hours? I have a convection oven and it cooks rather fast. I love seeing your beautiful girl Willow! Thank you for including her in your videos. We have two little girls, Minnie Mouse and Merry Anna, who are our kids. My husband and I love seeing your gardens. We both grew up on dirt roads in Western New York...we know about dust. But now we live in Arizona and trust me, it's worse! Great videos! Thank you for all that you share! We look forward to seeing more! Happy Fall!
Thank you for subscribing! My website has the whole recipe and directions. newenglandfineliving.com Have fun!
Thank you! Got it and I'm now signed up! I'm looking forward to your next video! You give me incentive to do things with my home! Thank you! You are a great inspiration!@@newenglandfineliving
Another way to tell if you have hard water is that it’s nearly impossible to get the laundry detergent completely rinsed in a load. Our water is hard so I have to use a smaller amount of detergent to create the perfect balance of suds and complete rinsing.
Good to know!
Saturday night suppers...baked beans and hotdogs at my Gram and Gramps, best memories in Toy Town, USA
OCTOBER! I'm psyched but it's still 85 degrees here. Sigh.
Another great video! Thanks for sharing.
Well water is soft and city water is treated and hard.
Beautiful bean crocks. Would love to “find” one here in South Carolina. I’ll be on the lookout now. Thanks for the lovely video. 😊
Even though I have a dehydrator, I dry my herbs on a folding laundry rack. I hang the bundles with twist ties. It works great! I will be trying dried oranges in the dehydrator for the holidays, though.
Love that. Most are hanging in our butler pantry, and I have other herbs on our drying rack, on the porch. I wanted these done in a day so that I could jar them with the others and enjoy sooner than later.
I love Boston baked beans but I have never made them the correct way from scratch! You are an inspiration and next time I will give that a try!
If you give it a try, enjoy the moment and have fun! The recipe is on my blog now if you want to follow the instructions there too.
Loved this video . I would love to know how the fundraiser for the meeting house is going .
Thank you for posting .
Memories making homemade baked beans! I always used a bit more molasses than called for cuz I love it ! In a real bean pot as well, 48 years ago!
I like mine sweeter too. I was thinking today I should modify my mom's recipe and add a tablespoon more or so of molasses.
Linda! your moms baked beans recipe , is look like delicious , thank you to share with us . I well try your mom recipe
Please do and let me know what you think! This recent batch came out fantastic!
Cant wait to see how beans turn out...
They came out delicious. I will share next week for sure!
Our hummers left on Sept 20 but we keep our feeders up to help the stragglers. Time to make bake beans with the cooler temps. Enjoyed.
Will try your mother’s recipe looks delicious 😊 I remember when you got your blazer I think you were in the Groton home still love it 😊
If you had hard water, you'd know it. Unless you have the water in your washer pre-softened. In hard water, the detergent just doesn't seem to make suds. And it leaves hard, crusty deposits in sinks and toilets. My mom made hot dogs and baked beans every Saturday night for many years, in many different areas of the country, but I never heard her comment on hard water making a difference in how she cooked them. Also, being aware of your surroundings in nature (humming bird) doesn't mean you're easily distracted. It means you're paying attention. If our ancestors hadn't noticed the saber tooth tiger coming at them, we wouldn't be here...
Looks yummy Linda enjoy. Thank you for sharing 😊 Best Wishes, Marty M❤
Thanks so much
It’s not just a New England thing,,my Mom made them the same, except she used a black iron Dutch oven ,same one she cooked the beans ,and just added everything else she did add a bullion cube in the middle of the onion, thanks for a wonderful memory.oh and I believe she used cranberry beans most of the time ..I am going to try these .We live in the mountains of upper East Tennessee, ,she was an excellent cook 🍁🍂
When I say that, it will usually means it originated here, or a particular version of, like this recipe. ;-). For sure they are made everywhere now. Boston Baked beans have history back to the Massachusetts Bay Colony modified from England.
This is the first time I've heard of cranberry beans. I'm going to give them a try, thank you for the information.
I’ve never come across cranberry beans, something I will keep an eye out for!
Linda. Do you have a source for the sink oval sieve? It would be perfect for my needs. Thank you! Great video❤
I found mine while out thrifting one day. I am on the hunt for one I can share.
I don't like baked beans but appreciate you promoting old New England recipes. Would love to see others!
More to come for sure!
I want to try the baked beans at least once to see how yummy they are😊
If you liked baked beans, I think you will like these! Ben does not like any time of bean. At first he would not try, then did, then wrinkled his nose. LOL. I do the same with peas and totally get it.
I love those baked bean pots Linda!… the recipe sounds delicious can’t wait to see it next week..😋.. What happens if you come face to face with a skunk, do they automatically spray their scent?.. it’s supposed to be quite unpleasant I believe?… Lovely coat, it did suit you.
Also where's the Maple Syrup? I was pastor in Harrisville NH and we always did a baked bean supper and the beans had maple syrup in them!
I did it old school! They used molasses, left over from the Rum being made in Boston during the 18th century. Maple syrup is certainly another version, but the molasses makes it a true old New England style recipe.
Our hummers in Northern Wisconsin left last week. I miss them!
Adore baked beans!!! On my list to cook!!
To "soften" the water, add baking soda to the initial soaking. 😉
Thank you!
Last year I had Peppermint planted in a pot out the back door by the herb garden....it survived the winter in that pot! Grew like crazy this year. Maybe you should try leaving some mint out and see how it does.
Thank you for sharing your garden info. I might give that a try!
I really enjoyed your Mother's Boston baked beans recipe. It sounded Early American. I am going to have to figure out 🤔where to get a new baked bean crock to use when I try your recipe! Yum! I enjoy your videos.😊❤
Hi Linda, I love your videos. New to them. Love the bean pots. Purchased one and have yet to do the Boston baked beans. However, I noticed you preheated your oven first. Have read up on the bean pots. It stated don’t preheat oven before you put bean pot in. Put in then preheat. Just wanted to let you know the information I read. Yours looked beautiful and very delicious. Thank you for your videos. 😊Love them! 🎃
Yes 🙌 should have mentioned to warm the pot first. They could crack or worse break if they are cold going in. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
Oooh, that molasses makes me want to make ginger cookies. I love every bean I have ever eaten. I can't wait for the first cool front to arrive. It is 97 today and no sign of fall in the air.
You just made me want to pull out my Grandmother's ginger molasses cookies too! Maybe I will share it soon. I'm guessing it is similar/same to yours too!
@@newenglandfineliving ginger cookies were my mother's go to hand out for Trick or Treat. The community started checking with her in September every year to make sure they were going to get cookies. I would love for you to share that cookie making in a video!
Beans looked yummy. Your life there is beautifully busy. Linda, remind me about your kitchen countertops…honed granite, or something else? I really like them. Fall is slowly moving in, here in NC. Have to buy some mums before they are gone! Have a great week.
The counters are a honed quartz to mimic soapstone
Thanks, Linda. Love the look of soapstone, not the maintenance. Yours are perfect. I hope to copy is a compliment because I may choose these for my kitchen. Blessings to you. @@newenglandfineliving
