Every week I’m interviewing fascinating people in our community, nation and around the world!
The idea came from a Facebook commenter who saw a video of me and my family floating down the river in Island Park. The person said I should turn the tables and interview my dad (Nate Eaton) - so I did and the rest is history!
Brian Wood is the owner of Wood Funeral Home in Idaho Falls and Ammon. He is the fifth generation funeral director in his family and Wood Funeral has been around for over 100 years.
I sat down with Brian to figure out what he does for his job and how he deals with death!
Here are the questions I asked him:
What does a funeral director do?
What happens when someone is cremated?
Have you ever seen a unique coffin?
When someone dies, what do you do with their body?
How many flowers do you see a day?
You’re around a lot of sad people. How do you comfort them and how do you stay positive?
What’s something we might not know about your job?
I learned a lot about Brian’s job. Watch the video in the player above to see our entire interview and you can learn more about Wood Funeral Home on their website and Facebook page.
If you have any ideas of someone I should interview or just want to say hi, email me: emmy@eastidahonews.com.

What a nice way to explain cremation to children. Emmie keep asking questions. Not only are you helping children but you are helping adults to be able to explain this to children. Thanks Emmie

Emmy is able to open up so many people. Kids want to know these things so they aren't afraid. Adults too!
I don't even live anywhere near this news station, but the community is really great!

🌹✝️ I thoroughly enjoyed how mature Emmy is, during this interview! Where she seems to be well aware, that death is not permanent in a Spiritual Sense. It's just passing on, to another adventure. 🙏🤗

Good job Emmy and Brian. That was a hard subject to talk about and you did such a good job. I will be cremated as all my family has been since I can remember.

good info… As someone who just had to deal with figuring out what our mom wanted. She had partially preplanned her wishes- she chose a blue casket about 20 years ago, but never bought a plot. So, my brother and I had to quickly remember she didn’t want to be cremated, and then had to find a place for her to rest. We chose a mausoleum crypt at at one of the local early California Norte Spanish Missions. We aren’t Catholic, but she loved visiting the missions.
do your family a huge favor… buy a cemetery plot as an investment.

Oh my goodness-how sweet… We lost our oldest son very unexpectedly 2 1/2 years ago. It was an unaccompanied death in another state.
As a result, he was taken to the Medical Examiners for an autopsy. It took them 2 weeks to release him to a funeral home. Because of the time delay we decided on cremation and I wanted to bring him home to North Idaho with us in our car… This occurred in L.A. county and we chose the mortuary by the fact we could understand the person on the phone when we called to make arrangements…So three weeks after his death we received a call to come and get him… We had to find the mortuary using GPS. It was in a sketchy neighborhood in LA. There were bars on the windows and the door. The door was locked and we had to ring a buzzer…No one came to the door-even though we had an appointment with them. We finally got them on our cell phone. The director was a man we had never met before. He just had our sons ashes in a box on the entrance table in the foyer. His name was on the box- we signed for him and left…… It was the most awful experience of my life…I still to this day wonder if we really got my boy back in that box…. What I wouldn’t have given for some one like Mr Wood on the other side of that door that day….

Oh my goodness Bonnie, I am so very sorry you and your family had to experience such a difficult time in bringing your son home. I hope you contacted the funeral home in a letter to let them know how painful your experience was. It might save another family the pain that you have endured. If you did not, I suggest you do write them, because clearly it's an education in compassion they need.
May the memories of joy and good times be what you think of most often.
