REBUILDING The CLUNKY Front STRUTS On My $450 Volvo S60

  • There is a lot that needs fixed on the $450 2001 Volvo S60 2.4t. The plan was to get it in the shop, then power through replacing/rebuilding the front struts, replacing the entire PCV system that cause the cam seals to blow out, and replacing the blown out cam seals along with the timing belt and water pump. Turns out doing all that in one day was a bit of a stretch, the more we worked on the car the more things we found needed replacing. The struts are done, a new sway bar endlink was installed, the H6 battery was tested and replaced under warranty, and headlight wipers were ordered.
Thank you To FCPEuro for sponsoring this video and build!

I'm used to doing the struts by myself, always a bear. I had some $6 Chinese spring compressors, and I've actually had a spring explosion once, lucky to be alive. It knocked me out for a minute. That Volvo is a cool car, I could tell that it was going to be one of those dealer serviced cars during it's lifetime. I have a BMW like that, always dealership and European mechanic shop maintained.

I had a volvo s60 from 2002 that was the P2 chasis. It bought it in like 2009 at 80k and had to retire it at just under 250k in late 2018. If you didn't get one with the dreaded transmission slip from the early years it was a great car. But I ended up buying those special shock mounts for the front from IPD and it made a huge difference in the longevity of those common failure points.

Fun video, good work on a really nice car, that would probably be on the scrapyard a few years from now, if nobody cared like you. Few tips from a licensed mechanic tho, if you take off linkage for the swaybar on one side, you have to do it on the other side to. Othervise you have a big problem mounting struts because the swaybar equalizes the force for both sides. And secondly, never drive a springcompressor with an impact driver, seriously, dont. Use a machine witouth impact force. The hammering shatters the material in the compressor and i could snap. And as you rightfully pointed out: the most dangerous job on a car.. Keep up the good work, luv the video of the boat!

I agree with you about using Volvo oem parts, that’s really the way to go. I personally would have bought a whole front end kit depending on what condition the rest of the front end was in and just replaced everything else in the process. As for the front struts, yeah that’s a dangerous process. I probably would’ve brought those things to David (aka. the wizard) and had him swap out the strut assemblies since I presume he probably has a wall mounted spring compressor at his shop, that probably would be a safer route to go with that then you could swap the new assembly back into the car. Either way, you guys did a good job and I look forward to more videos on the S60

I have FCP Euro on speed dial. Most P2 S60s around here are in the $1500-$2500 range because owners don't realize the PCV system NEEDS to be changed or timing belts are bad to let break. Over the past 3 years I've spent about $3000 on mine getting it to 100%. The only parts that really need help are the right side knob on the radio and the bolts holding the sunroof (one stripped), he engine mounts are in a box (due of course) and my left axle is JUST now starting to make noise at full right lock. 😂 I love working on it though.

do a Seafoam video to see how much it smokes lol. Also I'd say put a can of Berrymans B12 in the gas tank to clean the fuel system.

I had to do the PCV aka "flame trap" and it's such a crappy design removing the whole manifold. I had the same problem where I was hearing a crazy whistling sound because of the pressure but thankfully it didn't blow any seals.
