I live in the Santa Fe NM area which can be quite dry. These are extremely drought tolerant. In a period of drought they look like they have died, then with the first rain, wow!..They are back and blooming. Also, if you can find one growing somewhere, take hardwood cuttings. Pot them and you will have all the Bluebeard you ever dreamed of. Don't use rooting hormone. They can be pruned into a beautiful round shrub or planted in a line to make a nice hedge. I have them all over my property from one plant that a friend gave me. If you can't find one for cuttings, buy one. They grow from seed in graveled areas and are actually considered a weed by some folks. Michael
I have so much carys. I even use them to marinate my chicken. It’s crazy. I just made probably 30 cuttings. And every single one survived. They smell so good

Thank you for your thorough explanation on care and pruning. I live in MIchigan (Zone 5-6) and love the “Bluebeard” that I transplanted last spring. It was a joy to watch honeybees and bumblebees swarm it in late summer / early fall and I’m looking forward a full 2023 growing season.
Bought three of these from a local nursery. Not this variety, but three colors together, white, pink, blue. Loved it.

One of my absolute favorites for its color and general hardiness. The pollinators rate it pretty highly as well 😉 Nice addition of the care card at the end.

Jim, I've got a question. I purchased 3 of these late summer this year. Mine are Pavillion Blue Caryopteris. Tag says 18" height. How far down would you prune this one since it doesn't get very big to begin with? And also it says online that this plant only lives 2-3 yrs. Is that true in your experience?
You don't have to prune them at all. I have a bigger one and haven't touched it in 4 years. When it gets too too big, or if the flowering slows down, I'll give it a chop, but until then I'll just leave it. I have lots of shrubs that I bought because the maximum height is what I want. So unless there are wild stems sticking out or some shaping is needed, I don't really bother with pruning.
