    @LiselleSambury I was so spent mentally and emotionally after finishing the 1st draft of my novel I had LITERALLY given up on continuing with it. And then I went to my bookshelf last night and picked up my copy of "Delicious Monsters". I was about 60 pgs in...the imagery, the character (Daisy especially)..the nuance of your writing reignited something in me. And for that I have to thank you. YOU probably have no idea how inspiring your videos are, but I need you to know how much I appreciate you for just..being!!

      🥹 thank you so much! That really does mean a lot to me. It’s hard to kind of conceptualize what the book does once it’s out, so it means a lot. Like, I’m truly so happy the book could help you refind that spark. I wish you the absolute best with your novel and I hope that you celebrate what a huge deal it is to have a first draft. It can take literal years to get to that point sometimes and it’s an accomplishment to celebrate

    The way you speak very frankly about the finances of being a full time writer is really refreshing!! As an aspiring author, your "demystifying" the profession is much appreciated 💚

      I’m so glad!! That’s a huge part of why I talk about these things on my channel because there’s a lot of opaque parts of this industry, so whatever I can help make more transparent, I’m glad to

      Same. I love when Liselle does these types of videos. Now if only she had time to do a Tier Ranking Writer Habits 2.0.

    One of my biggest takeaways from this type of video is that Canada seems to really support its creatives. Thank you for always including graphs. That extra level of detail is much appreciated.

      That is definitely something that I’ve really come to appreciate about living here and didn’t really know before. But there are so many types of art grants not even just for writers, but musicians and filmmakers too. I’m definitely glad for it. And happy you like the graphs! I figure the visuals are helpful ☺️

    Thank you for making these videos every year!!! They’re so interesting and helpful!! And thank you for adding the author expenses segment! I got a grant from the Canada council of the arts this past year (thank you for introducing it to me!!) and I’ve been a bit unsure of what I can claim as expenses on my taxes, so this is a help!!! Thank you!!! ❤

      Glad you’re getting use out of them and congrats on getting a grant!! And I would definitely recommend checking with an accountant because I am not an expert, and I’m sure my accountant edits what I submit, but glad to at least give you an idea of the sort of things that may be eligible.

    I love your hair and makeup! 😍 I appreciate your transparency and sharing all about how you make it as a full-time author! Definitely not something a lot of people can do! I also think it makes a difference with what part of the world you live in and not that I think it’s “easier” in Canada (I know a few disabled people who live in Canada who are on the U.S. equivalent of SSI and it sucks)-but you seem to have more access to grants and stuff like that (I did get one grant for one of my novels here in the U.S., but those opportunities are harder to find). I also appreciate your breakdowns and what can be used for tax write offs, etc. I just did my 2022 taxes (as a freelance sensitivity/authenticity reader) and was able to write off my office supplies, air purifier, etc. I also didn’t realize you were responsible for paying some of your sensitivity readers! I thought that went through the publisher. That’s usually what happens with me, even if I’ve reached out to the author directly, they will usually put me in contact with their editor/publisher (unless it’s a paid beta read and the manuscript isn’t in a publishing stage yet, then the author will pay me directly). But wow! I find it really interesting that you also pay for your sensitivity readers. Thank you. I hope I get to work with you someday! And I saw your comment on one of my previous posts-please reach out! I’d love to help you! I’d be honored. I’m doing sensitivity reading for another AuthorTube friend I met on here. I’m ridiculously thorough, too. Thank you again for doing this every year! And for including N95 masks in your expenses! I’m eagerly waiting for my hardcover preorder of TENDER BEASTS to arrive. 🥰

    • @LiselleSambury
      @LiselleSambury  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you! And so my publisher pays for sensitivity readers up to a certain amount of money. And because the word count on my novels tends to be 150k plus, my costs for readers tend to be much higher. Especially since I often need 2-3 readers. So I usually end up paying for some of them. If I only needed one reader, the publisher amount would cover everything but alas. And yay, so closer to release day and getting that hardcover!

    This is so fascinating! How do royalties for audiobooks compare to hard cover and paperback?

    • @LiselleSambury
      @LiselleSambury  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      So it basically depends on what you’ve negotiated with your publisher, so it’s different for everyone. But the industry standard for traditional pub as far as I could tell for hardcovers is between 10-15%, paperbacks between 5-7.5%, audio and ebook at around 25-30%. But at least in my case, I sell much less audio and ebook, so even if the royalties tend to be higher at industry standards, the quantity is lower.
