    By far the heaviest of all these vessels, the 6645 tons Iver Huitfeldt-class, are really stealthy guided-missile destroyers. Denmark has five frigate-destroyers in this superior weight class armed with Harpoons cruise missiles. The Danish Navy classify them as a frigates only to avoid antagonizing the Russians (and Sweden who has zero frigates as opposed to Denmark who has 9 in all). That´s how polite the Danes are.

    • @zuki70
      @zuki70 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, yes and no... The two first, Absalon and Esbern Snare (Absalon Class) was commisioned for a support-and-control role, therefore designated "Flexible Support Ships". For internal political reasons, they were not initially designated as "Frigates". This was not to avoid antagonizing Russia, rather to not sound too "warlike" in the domestic political climate.
      They have, however, later been re-classified as frigates.
      These two ships of the Absalon Class became the basis for the construction of the Iver Huitfeldt Class, which are more to be considered "true" frigates. (Absolon's only have two engines, less armament and are more suitable for various supporting roles, rather than the one of front line combatant - a role more befitting the Ivar Huitfeldt class of ships.
      The Absalon Class ships are today set up for anti-submarine warfare, as the Iver Huitfeldt's are set up in an anti-air role.
      Harpoon missiles are not cruise missiles - they are anti-ship missiles.
      Both classes should (afaik) be capable of being armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles, but those are not yet fielded by the Danish Navy.

    • @jesperlykkeberg7438
      @jesperlykkeberg7438 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zuki70 Please note that the Iver Huitfeldt Class is armed with the upgraded block ll Harpoon missiles - These are regarded as short-range subsonic naval STS (surface to surface) CRUISE MISSILES by most sources and is indeed included in wikipedia´s list of cruise missiles together with similar missile systems such as Naval Strike Missile (Norway) and R-360 Neptune (Ukraine). Will you also now claim these aren´t cruise missiles?
      The Iver Huitfeldt's are set up in an air defence role indeed, and with their huge size (comparable to WWll light cruisers), large advanced radar systems (SMART-L and APAR), their armament (Evolved Sea Sparrow missile and SM-2 IIIA) and their extreme endurance they are in fact nothing less than full blown guided missile destroyers, not merely "frigates" which is basicly just a term for ocean going patrol vessels.
      The reason we call them frigates has absolutely nothing to do with any domestic political climate in Denmark. We call them frigates solely for international/diplomatic reasons because we, in line with the Dutch, the Germans and the Norwegians, are very nice and humble people who wouldn´t want to be seen as antagonizing a certain...you know who. Lol.

    Modern warfare takes place more in the air, under the sea and on land in tank or stealth infantry missions, hence the preferance for smaller naval vessels, apart from aircraft carriers which have got bigger to launch more aircraft, as they are more likely to be, taking down air threats, submarines or shooting at land targets, or just patrolling to stop unwanted intrusion into a country's own waters, of enemy countries or pirates. For the most part the all out sea battle, seems to be a thing of the past.

    • @Chrinik
      @Chrinik 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Russias Cold War Naval Doctrine was very close to interwar Japan.
      "We will be outnumbered, we can't outbuild them, so lets make sure a single ship of ours can engage as many targets as possible."
      Hence why things like Moskva class cruisers are floating missile batteries with air-plane sized missiles, designed to out-shoot a US navy task-force and then run like hell.
      The idea was, that if you throw enough shit at the wall, eventually some of it will stick, and sinking one or even two carriers is a huge win, even if you have to lose half a dozen ships to do so.
      But with the idea of all out war being somewhat of a relic, ships are mostly designed around fleet protection and support. Destroyers are the main surface combat unit (other than carriers) and a "decisive fleet action" would probably involve tons of aircraft launched from carriers, rather than two fleets moving in to engage each other with missiles.
      But you know, they still carry them, because you never know...

      We admire your patriotism...but I think this site is referencing platform designs under 36 years old.
      The Halifax, with her upgrades still offers a robust contribution...but like the Type 23...It's time.
      When I was a kid, the RCN had 20 DDEs, 4 Iroquois....and a flippin' Light fleet carrier.
      Today, the Canadians have chosen to build 15 T26 (Lamborghinis) to cover both coasts?... Sorry..No.
      Remembering traditions and history...the game remains Anti-sub and control of Sea lanes.
      The RCN in conjunction with the 3 other Royals...always keeping our Kiwi friends in mind, requires a more realistic expenditure to fulfill these roles.
      The RCN requires:
      06...Type 26.
      14...Type 31.
      12...Visby Corvettes.
      09...A-26 SSK.
      04...''Hardened'' Astrix AOR.
      Because of the current 'SJW' dire straights of the Armed Forces....don't get me going.
      *All 6 of the new AOP/Arctic Patrol Vessels, should be operated by an RCN trained and militarized and armed Canadian Coast Guard, using the United States and Australia as an example.

      The only reason why the Spanish frigate is in the NATO shield it’s because it is compatible with the US systems
      Otherwise Italians would have such roles since our new radars also have more range (the Aegis tue Spanish have is around 400/500km of range, the Italian new radars can reach up to 600/700km, as much as US improved Aegis)

    Type 54A isn't very good, it is a crappy copy of the Lafayette class and armed with bad copies of Russian missiles. The quality of the sailors is even worse they actually have rules to avoid collision between their ships and they need to stay so far apart you can sail a Nimitz class supercarrier and it's escorts in between 🤣🤣🤣

    Most of these navies don't have capital size ships worth protecting. There was too much emphasis on AA defense and not enough info on anti-surface capabilities besides the size and number of tubes. Sub hunting is the traditional role of a frigate. I doubt most of these are on the same or equal technology plane when it comes to underwater kit.
