  • In this video I demonstrate how to play the intro to Panama by Van Halen. Panama is one of the most iconic Van Halen songs recorded and probably one of the most memorable music videos in their entire catalogue. It features a fantastic smoldering groove between Eddie, Michael and Alex. David Lee Roth also delivers one of his finest recorded moments on vocals. The guitar intro is a little tricky to begin with but is quite simple once you get the chord voicings and timing correct. It also provides valuable insight into Eddie Van Halen's style and choice of chord structures commonly found throughout his music. This song was featured on the multi platinum (Diamond) album 1984, and will go down in history as one of the most memorable hard rock songs from the 80's and in my book ... of all time. I hope you enjoy the video and lesson. Please subscribe!

My favorite song to play in a guitar store. Eddie said he wrote Panama with AC/DC’s song structure in mind. Wanted to write a no-BS rock song and he did just that.

Man I absolutely love this Wolfgang guitar that you have Marty! Awesome! I'm so glad that you did this lesson tuned to standard. It's a pain tuning down with a Floyd, so this was excellent. Thank you again man! 💪🏻😎🎸

Awesome lesson as always! The best part is always the sketched out tabs/notes/chords. Really helps me put it together visually and then put it together in my own fretboard

I like that kill switch mod where the tone knob was at. To me the Strat or Frankie sounds better without the tone knob pot like the Wolfgang’s with the same pickup. Is that 10mm or 16mm tesi kill switch?

SGs are nice. I prefer Les Paul's. Just sold a 1960's reissue in Pelham blue with p90's. I'd like to get a black custom SG. They are light and sound amazing. Great guitars.

Yes, it is. Great sounding amp man! They are kind of unreliable thought I've had a couple and they have issues with the fx loops and circuitry switching between the tubes. I wound up selling this amp due to some odd crackling noise I couldn't sort out. I did keep the Egnator 1x12 cabs. They are amazing and very easy to transport.

@@Ranch5150SkinWalker Interesting. I thought Bruce Egnater was supposed to be an amp godfather, surprised to hear about unreliability. Ok, I will spend the next two months working on Panama haha. Thanks for your lessons, they are really good. To the point, not "now, put your index finger on the 7th fret of the A string, then ...." I like how you just get into detail when it is necessary.

@@doubled5383 thanks so much man. I appreciate the positive feedback! In all honesty, you can get these egnators cheap. They are worth the risk. They really do sound bad ass.

I’ve always had a really tough time getting the rhythm feel for this intro, I can play it if I work on it but it’s not like a riff I can whip out of my riff bank at anytime. I don’t know why this and the Ratt or some of the Ratt riffs that pedal the e between triads and sue chords always mix me up, you’d think playing thrash songs that open e pedal would be second nature but it feels completely awkward for me the rhythm and that’s the beauty of Eddies playing the Rhythm that sounds so simple is incredibly tricky to put the right swing on it.
