Hi Maria - the whole NTLive enterprise is epic! Thank you for watching and feel free to dive into over reviews! My next theatre review will likely be The Motive and The Cue!
For anyone reading your review and then seeing movie there are some valuable clues to identify characters. Viz. Ivan has sunglasses on (or on top of head when not speaking). Michael plays with a tennis ball, Sonya always has a red tea towel, Helena always plays with chain at neck and sits on the swing a lot. If empty swing is moving she is present. As the play progresses a lot of these signals disappear as audience learns who is who. Unusually for an NT Live film it is not an NT production. I saw it three times, and bette each time👍👍👍
Hi Helen I'm sure it was epic! Thank you for dropping in those visual pointers for people looking to catch Vanya online. From my perspective this really was a tremendous thing and Andrew Scott deserved every piece of attention!
Alexander - retired film producer/professor who has lived for years on the earnings of his late first wife’s rural estate, managed for him by Vanya and Sonya Helena - Alexander’s young and beautiful second wife - 27 years old Sonya - Alexander’s daughter from his first marriage; considered plain Maria/Maureen - mother of Vanya - and of Vanya’s late sister, Alexander’s first wife Ivan/Vanya - Maria/Maureen’s son and Sonya’s uncle; brother-in-law of Alexander Michael - a middle-aged country doctor; preoccupation with the destruction of forests Crater/Ilya - an impoverished landowner who now lives on the estate as a dependent of the family.
I loved this play and it was completely new to me! Being a one-man performance, keeping track of the characters as Andrew Scott brings them to life is crucial. Thank you for watching and offering others a deeper understanding. Also I appreciated the clarification personally!
I have just seen it. It is FABULOUS ❤ andrew scott is amazing

I'll admit it has been a long time since I watched Vanya - you mean the song on the piano
Sonya is Anna's daughter, not Helena's
