Not a stirring swashbuckler like "The Sea Hawk", this film, a sea-misted psychological mystery based on a Jack London novel, featured an excellent star turn from Edward G Robinson who, like the character he plays, was an erudite, highly cultured man beneath his seemingly hard exterior. Korngold's score is relatively restrained and less opulent than those for the Erroll Flynn movies but is more atmospheric, at times almost impressionistic. Great CD from the NZSO, focusing on two "rarer" Korngold scores, though "The Sea Wolf" has also been issued in different readings by Naxos and Chandos.

Great score, but the film is extraordinary- with one of the most shocking "coup de theatre" ever! Directed by the brilliant Michael Curtiz. thanks!

Korngold found 'love' hard to find in the Sea Wolf; his bright, sunny key of 'F' is less prominent here.
