I live in the Midwest, specifically WI. If you say "American doesn't care about Hockey" around here you might as well have just punched someone in the face. Ice Risks at every city park across the Midwest during winter, kids from 3yo skating and putting pucks into nets.

As a brazilian person, I always get a little triggered when he calls the US "America". There are other countries in this continent, you know.
I am Italian so I can only speak for Italy, but perhaps this is true for other countries as well. Almost everyone in Italy calls the USA "America" and probably thinks of the US when hears it as opposed to the continent. If we want to refer to other countries we call them by their actual name. It's not because for us the US represents the whole continent, it's just an abbreviation for the "A" part in "USA"
If I have to find a reason for this it is probably because full names are better sounding in non-english languages. We call the UK "Inghilterra" (England) even if most of the times we are referring to the whole country and not just the English part, just because the letter abbreviation wouldn't fit in the conversation flow. I guess in Brazil you don't refer to the US as just "America" even if you don't speak English because you're actually inside the continent and it might feel weird/be ambiguous, but for us this is a more distant concept and we might carry the habit of calling it America even when we speak English.

I'm from the US and we call ourselves Americans and call our country America. One of our top patriotic songs is "America the beautiful" and no, it's not referencing Brazil. We consider south America to be a different continent than us as well. Our continent is North America and consists of all countries from Panama northward
@@arex7559I'm also from Brazil, but I would have a different guess. We can only speak and the language replicate and evolves around what is said. Sadly for us, the US refer to themselves as America. Which isn't really inadequate: Brazil's full name is Republica Federativa do Brasil (Brazilian federative republic as a free translation), but we call here Brasil because, well, every country has a long name as well. So it's understandable that the people from the (United States of) America would omit the first part, like every one else.
Sadly, the second part is also the name for the continent, and since the US is the major producer in films, series, and a lot of the content for the western world, they get to shape the language. Therefore, US is called America not because it's easier or it fits better, but for the same reason we are having this conversation in English despite that being neither of our mother languages.
One other reason that might contribute could be the lack of reasoning to use the name of a continent. If you're coming to visit Brazil, it doesn't make sense to say you're going to America. It would only make sense to say that if you're going to travel through multiple countries here. In that scenario, though, America becomes a irreplaceable word, the same as when people here want to make a trip to Europe, it would be really hard to present the concept without the word "Europe". But since Brazil tends to be a country big enough to fulfill a trip on its own, and due to the lack many touristic spots in South America I could see that few people would have plans on having a trip through America, making this use of the word sparse.
