Got on IRC in 1996. Spent about 3-4 years deep into it and was addicted. Met a couple women from there who became friends. We would all hang out at the mall near by. Sometimes going into funfactory and doing the A/S/L thing actually worked. Good times.

In the late 90s/early naughties I was mostly into gaming. Made lots of real life friends that way. Some visited me from other countries. Learnt English, too, which led me to become a professional translator. When I wanted to move to the Netherlands, over a decade later, one of them found me a place to stay. Still there to this day. Thanks, Laurens 🙂

There's OP and then there's OP. There's ChanOP basically a boss of a chat channel. Then there's IRCOP who is a boss on the specific network. ChanOP, depending on level given by the channel owner/creator, has control over the operation of the specific channel (can make channel ops, kick, ban, voice). The IRCOP has been given their powers by the Admin/owner of the network allowing them to kick, ban, add privileges or take them away for the whole network
