Californian in a constant state of wanderlust, currently traveling the world. I’m here to share my adventures and give you tips about travel, culture, language, and life.
Great tip! Your nervous laugh after every few sentences make me smile. Grandma says to always carry a sewing kit 🤓 and maybe a couple of bungee cords, which come in handy when you have a luggage mishap.
Ooh yes I actually usually do have a sewing kit! But I haven't thought about bungee cords, good idea, grandma!
The bag is the best idea!! Esp in hostels when you arrive late and all your stuff for the night is in the BAG!! 🙌🏼 Best advice ever!!
Haha. You have the best personality. Everybody loves the grandma that's got everything you could possibly want in that magical bag on her shoulder.
my son just moved to Christchurch new zealand a week ago. he says it's pretty different. he's from Thornton Colorado. wow, you are so awesome to listen to. you seem to know a lot and enjoy your travels. maybe you'll run into my son and give him a few tips. Enjoy and God bless you. be safe.
Hi Linda! Aw that's nice to hear. Hope your son is settling in nicely and tell him if he sees me to say hi! I'll definitely give him some tips!
I’m with you on the hand sanitizer for travel. I have a small one that hangs on the outside of my travel bag so I can use it right away after touching sketchy surfaces. Like you, don’t use it normally, but for traveling, definitely!
Paris. Thanks for the tips Granny Mari
Glad there is at least another me out there. If your a Grandma I'm your British great grandma.I do all of this too when traveling. Plasters in purse but with pain killers and at least two travel sickness pills as well.Button expander in coin purse and a safety pin.Two small yoga towels, one for hair the other for body ( can be used then as well as scarf as bunk curtains in hostels).Collapsable bottle and small Collapsable sandwich box or lidded steam escape microwave cup ( for soup or noodles) Reuse small shampoo/ wash bottles from travel for liquid detergent for future travels.Use big soda bottles with top cut off as bunk /bed bin.So many more but now I'm well in to granny mode.Safe future travels, keep up the tips,I might find one I also need.
Haha glad to find another grandma!!
Dual SIM smartphones - winning! And definitely noise cancelling earbuds. Headphones are more effective, but takes up more room and may cause headaches on really long hauls.
love yur vids! anyone won the bottle yet? gonna say Mexico but... I have a friend in KK ( Kaikoura ) - never been - love your spirit, energy, and the adventures in NZ!!! Cheers m8!
Hi Mari, I love all the practical travel advice and tips you share with us. What size of Healthy Human water bottle fits in the weekender carry on that you use? Thanks
Great tips Mari. I agree with all of them. Except the scarf. But Isa has one and she wholeheartedly agrees with you!
Got most of the stuff covered but I disagree on the watetbottle as I will travel around with a camelbag even when I go to work.
I will also carry around at least a sleeping bag and a thin mattress (additionally I do have a hamac)
Useful video! I think I'm a grandma too... haha by the way your sticker looks so cool on the bottle! And you went to Paris but someone told it first..!
Cheers to being "grandmas!" :)
...Hi Mari........don't feel Like A dork...or nanna....your vids are upbeat & have also helped me prepare....cheers.
I can see myself so much in you Mari ❤ I'm the kind of person who wants to be prepared at all times. nerdy-granny-personality who is always ready 👍😉❤
yes to nerdy-grannies!!! 😆
Can you take an umbrella in a carry-on?
Hi Mari! are you still planning on another trip to New Zealand?
Was it Paris with your family. Is there a bottle for every time zone?
What's the name of the app for maps without cell service??? I need that!!
therealityofhannah maps.me do a good app
Offline Google maps, you download the map of the area you want. But need WiFi and then can use without once downloaded
Are you picky about where you fill up your water bottle? Love your videos! 👍🏼
Nope, as long as I know it's safe to drink!
Thank you for the good tips. It will be handy for my trip as well.
I love all your videos! Always help me so much and to get out of my comfort zone!
Vale R. Mari is great and truly informative. Solo traveling can be an initial challenge but it's so rewarding
Such weird timing! I have literally just been trying to download some offline Google maps for my trip to SE Asia. Unfortunately it's only letting me download Vietnam, and a little bit of Hong Kong. Thailand, Laos & Cambodia won't let me download :(
I got here too late for the contest but that does look like a pretty cool water bottle!
Iain Cooper I can't recommend enough the app MAPS.ME
I used it on all the countries you mentioned (+ Malaysia and Singapore) for my SE Asia trip and it worked wonders even on tiny islands. Just download beforehand the country and you're good to go.
Karen, that's great, thank you so much! I will install that right now :) I am good at getting lost so this will help me a lot. Thanks!
I remember you said in a video that you have an awkward laugh and I have noticed it and it is the exact same one as mine so I can really relate but I love it. This was also a really helpful video as I want to take a couple road trips and go to Canada this summer :)
😊😊😊
Thanks Mari for travel essential video. Travelling alone is sometimes scary! So you have reminded all the stuff needed while travelling. Keep rocking.
Hi Mari! First, I really like your channel it's very informative. Second, I was wondering if you ever met anyone during your travels that was traveling with their dog(s)? I was wanting to do a 6 month traveling trip next year but I want to take my 2 yorkies with me, I don't even know if this is feasible. Thank you!!
Hi Brenda! Hm, I haven't met anyone who's done overseas travel with pets, because that usually requires quarantines. You could definitely do road trips with your dogs though!
Thanks Mari for the tips! 👍 Love Love Looove all your videos! Keep it up! 👍🙌
No prob! Happy to help!!
Your voice reminds me of Jess from New Girl, I love it.
Great video Mari, seems that travel essentials are really universal ! 😊 😆 😄
I loved this. Being a travel mom for 10, sometimes 15, travelers at a time I am in full agreement with everything you just said. If you're a grandma I'm a grandma LOL.
Haha yes!! I can imagine how prepared you have to be!
Portable charger...yep I need that. Amazon here I come! Thanks for the great idea Mari! 😀😝
No prob!

Another vote for the Healthy Human water bottle I use one every day and it keeps my water nice and chilled I also like the three finger handle on the cap, much better than the one finger handle.
Yes! The cap is one of the reasons I chose it over other bottles!
I believe when u left country, you went to Bangkok. Hope I get that neat water bottle! Lol. Gr8 video from a real granny to a not really granny! Haha
Sunscreen?
We love your videos! So informative and overall awesome. :)
Where can I find a scarf like that ?
Travelling fascinates me love your videos I have been watching since few days . Subbed :)
Said it before, and said it again, freakin love that water bottle!
Do you have the link to the blue portable charger ?
+LyndeezleTV it's in the description! (Or the latest model at least)
great tips!!! thanks for sharing
thailand?
Manila the Philippines Mari Johnson you said what city place was it not Manila the Philippines
Great list. I travel a lot and my list is pretty much the same except hand sanitizer counts towards liquids, so I take travel wipes instead and you can use them to also wipe down a horrible greasy table or your area in the airplane or yucky washrooms so you don't catch anything. By the way, I'm a gramma. Don't make fun cause it'sawesome. Life is even better than when I was young.
Ooh, good tip! And definitely not making fun! I love grandmas! And I agree, I enjoy life more and more the older I get :)
Thanks for sharing Mari, this is so useful. Hopefully in 1 year I'll go travel SE Asia for a year :)
I hope you go too! Happy travels 😊
Mexico isn't overseas but duh!! I thought well you grew up in Cali...my instinct said Paris but...shucks, no water bottle....bummed face here
Where did you get that scarf?
H&M! It was a few years ago, but I'm sure they have something similar. :)
aww, just a couple minutes to late. Paris indeed was the first city. Love your videos, keep it up.
I'm kind of surprised anyone remembered! haha

Paris! I know I'm not the first comment but found this vid really helpful.
Happy to hear that!
Greece? hehe
Paris!
You are so not a grandma - these are products that are eight-year-old needs an 18-year-old needs a 38-year-old needs or a 58-year-old needs etc. In other words they are just things that everybody darn needs: so I guess it proves that grandma’s advice was good advice. (I didn’t actually have a grandma but we all know what I mean). Happy travels from Oz🇦🇺
London
What do you like to wear for shoes? Like which specifically?
sneakers, flip flops, boots, and flats usually :)
My grandma has all this stuff in her bag

You're so pretty!! (I'm a nerd)

Ah you're not a grandma! It's better to be prepared.
