Our today’s interviewee:
Andrzej Owsiński (born in 1919) and his brother escaped to Białystok in order to avoid being deported from Poland's Eastern Borderlands to Siberia. In Białystok they engaged in the underground resistance, intercepting radio messages and putting up posters with the intercepted information. During one such operation, they criticized the Red Army. They were overheard by a group of Jews standing nearby, who reported them to the militia. The Owsiński brothers were arrested and taken to the militia station. At first they were accused of insulting the Red Army, but then the accusation got more serious, as they were called the "enemies of the people." They were transported to the NKVD headquarters. The whole affair could've ended terribly, but Andrzej Owsiński told one of the NKVD men that he knew the Dzierżyński family, and he was released. His brother later also managed to escape. Andrzej Owsiński recalled the escape of the prisoner transport in Białystok: a truck filled with prisoners got stuck in the overcrowded town market, so the guards fired their weapons in the air to scare off the crowd, creating a great commotion. While the Russian soldiers were busy stealing from the market stalls amidst the chaos, the prisoners managed to escape.
